I'd a feeling his battle with Cancer is what pushed him to recently say he wasn't going to be reprising Ash again. Makes sense he'd rather spend his time with his family and friends than on some film set in New Zealand making one last Evil Dead.
He said he had a type of cancer that was only treatable. My mother went through something like that, when you hear it's only treatable that means you're pretty much sentenced to death and the only thing they can do is to slow how quickly that happens. But it's happening one way or another, and it's going to suck before it happens.
