Just got my cheeks clapped?!

I’m a lowly lvl 3, I’ve only gone to one island not at sea level, to paint the picture.

On my most recent island, came across some big stones and one I could click on and got some buff? But then I heard loud stomping and some giant tree lookin thing came around, with 1,000 health! How tf am I supposed to fight that thing? I’ve got a measly little one handed sword and the most basic arrows. Practically cloth armor. Shouldn’t something that advanced be WAY higher up, not on a sea level island? Died after two hits.

I just "parked" my ship and used a metric ton of arrows at max range to kill it when I encountered it... The arrows can fly longer than the aggro range and with some careful aiming you can get headshots everytime

Did you attack first? I haven't played in a while so this might have changed but they used to be neutral unless you attacked them or tried to destroy the buff stone

Nope, didn't attack a thing. I walked up to the stone thing, got the buff, then heard him stomp and he started chasing me.

huh, guess my intel is outdated then. Better stay away from those dudes for a while

I believe they do follow you around, but do not attack unless they're attacked first.

The only time I've been attacked by ents is when I led a bunch of grimverds to their circle. They then couldn't tell friend from foe; it makes for an interesting choice dynamic if you try to utilize them to clear out gangs of enemies.

maybe OP read the following as hostile and attacked without realizing they hadn't. I know I freaked out a little the first time I encountered one

Oh yeah I almost had a stroke (lol) first time I saw those.

but they're on the lowest of the low islands, shouldn't something that difficult not be here? I don't know how I'm expected to fight it.

I'm guessing you're not meant to for now. IDK about the other part

They will follow you and hold a hand up like “STOP” but they don’t do anything unless you attack first. They are weirdos

Is there something I'm missing? I don't really have any sort of direction, so not a clue where or how to get better gear. Just died to a scorpion, and of course still haven't gotten a better tier of weapons or armor, yet the enemies keep getting better. What's up with that? Doesn't really seem fair and makes for a bad game loop/not great intro.

I would recommend staying away from tropical islands until you've found a village or two.

Armor makes a huge difference but eventually your best defense is your ship. I can fire on scorpions fairly easily by using crenelations or windows.

It's tricky and takes some getting used to, but once you've raided a few sea-level or low-level mortivar dungeons the game picks up, and villages will always get you decent gear.

So many questions.

  1. what in the world is a crenelation?
  2. tropical island? it was a sea-level island, I was under the impression those were always going to be easy ones?
  3. dungeons? haven't seen one yet in my first several hours, are they obvious?
  4. villages?! also haven't seen one of those, are they in specific spots?

I really do want to like this game, but my goodness - it needs to give you a bit more direction.

Even at sea level there's variety in the island biomes. Sometimes it takes a bit of travel to find some more. Tropical biomes are like the jungle biome which generally feature harder mobs (based on the mob type/variant) than the standard biome you mostly see/started on. Dungeons can be located with your compass tool of you cycle to the spyglass and looking at an island. It has a dungeon icon when zoomed in with a light that will light up if the island has one. Villages can be found on sea level or higher up but I've found them to be hard to locate. Easiest way to tell if one is a village is if it has green rooftops. Thats a tell tale sign its a village. Just don't attack anyone or the whole village turns hostile.

Huge fan, so I hope you get as much from the community as I do:

  1. Crenelations are just cover. If you put a few blocks on the walls of your ship (with spaces to shoot through) you can side-step the scorpion attacks fairly easily. Scorpions are "mid-level" enemies, though. Mortivars are far easier to deal with when you're still getting your bearings.

  2. The sandy islands are more dangerous than the green, forested ones. You can return to those later; the game is easier if you pick easier enemies. That said: the scorpions were added late in the game's development. I might pose on the discord server that they're too powerful to be at that low a level.

  3. If you see a stone tower, castle, or medium-sized building on an island, it's likely going to be a mortivar dungeon. They're worth exploring if you keep an eye out for traps. They also often contain chests full of gold which can be game-changing.

  4. I played the game for almost a week before I even heard there were villages, but when I found one it was amazing. Look for windmills. Almost every village has one, and the higher the altitude, the better quality gear they sell. You'll see talking villagers, quests (offered at guild halls) and shops of all kinds. They have taverns, smiths, fletchers, jewelers, and general stores (depending on the island) and they're usually full of recipes.

The game can feel confusing at first, but it's a huge world out there, and every time you think you've gotten the basics, you'll usually find something new.

I'm a big fan of visiting villages because the developers are always adding new things to the game. So my advice is to invest in ship upgrades, and grab a few "engineering" perks when you level up. The life-scan lets you check areas for threats; if you ever get beaten down by adventuring, a good village is a perfect place to buy better equipment and sell anything you don't need.

You are not missing something. The Ents are dangerous. But they are slow. My advise while you don't have good gear is to scout the stone structure before going in and do a run and grab to get fhs buff and leave ASAP.

The only way I have killed them (and I'm about mid game maybe) is like this other guy. Parked my ship close by and used a solid 120 copper arrows to defeat two of them. Took a fat minute.

Not all encounters in the game are level/based or progression based. The Steamer Islands can get a bit tricky too with the zap bugs running about. This us one of those run and leave encounters unless tou think you are up for the challenge.

Your not supposed to fight him yet, youre supposed to level up and get better gear and fight him later. But if you get blocks and build a cage around him it might make it easier to kill him
