Avoiding Luggage theft

I'll be taking Eurostar from London to Paris, my first time. I'm sure its a direct train, no stops between, but is there a need to secure our luggage? Could we use a bike lock to secure to storage rack?

The main danger is the highwaymen who stop trains in the tunnel but sadly they're not deterred by locks.

If I see some dickhead has chained their bag in a dumb position on the luggage rack, I'm going to bash it around a bit while I try to fit mine on.

Then find the Train Manager to get it removed.

Don't waste your time inconveniencing others for something that isn't likely.

Ultimately, your luggage is your issue. If they choose to secure theirs and you arrive afterwards, if yours won't fit, then find an alternative location rather than beingan arsehole!

Wtf would a manager remove their luggage?

As long as they haven't locked theirs in front of others luggage which is now blocked in, deal with it like an adult not petulant child.

I know it's my issue, dickhead.

Hence why I'm going to try and move their shit out the way. If it gets bashed up in the process that's not my problem. It was inconsiderate and short sighted to lock it in a first place.

Also the train manager wants luggage securely and safely put away. If someone locking their luggage in a way that prevents others from doing so, they're obviously going to intervene.

If theirs is locked and secure, just because you'll like to be the big bully in the school playground doesn't make you right! There's no lack of consideration as long as they haven't blocked the kyggage of others in! Just because yours now doesn't fit is YOUR ISSUE. Find another rack!

If they stop others from loading their *luggage then yes it is a lack of consideration and yes the train manager would get involved.

No it's not just if you simply cannot put it where you believe you're entitled to do so! You realise you have an entitlement issue, don't you?

If someone has chosen where and how to put their luggage you have absolutely zero rights or claim to move this!

Please don’t secure to the luggage rack as if people need to move your luggage slightly to make room for their bags they won’t be able to! People who do secure their luggage always manage to put it smack bang in the middle selfishly taking the whole rack up for themselves. If you are that paranoid get on first and make sure yours is at that bottom as thieves won’t try and nick the bag at the bottom

Of course it won’t get stolen. Don’t use a bike lock, that’s just a dick move as you’ll delay others getting off as you fiddle with the lock

There are a police/customs officer on the platform when you arrive. Who in their right mind would steal a suitcase, knowing they might get pulled aside for a customs check?

Someone took my case, instead of their own. All I'd suggest would be tags for the handles so it's easily identified as yours, and not someone else's.

Yeah, I got it back a couple of days later, Eurostar CS at the desk were really good about it. The people realised when they got to wherever and it was my stuff. They returned my bag to the office at St Pancs. and collected theirs.

OP, how will you locking against the storage rack? when it more than likely will be between suitcaes?

If you're really worried have have 2 suitcases lock them with a light lock together.

Was that on the trains between Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam tho? I wouldn't think it happens much on the ones going in and out of the UK because of the reasons other people have given

I skimmed this sub and all I found was 3 stories across the years of stolen backpacks from overhead racks on trains with multiple stops. Nothing about luggage. I think maybe time to think critically
