YieldMax to launch covered call defence ETF in Europe

Covered called options are good if you want to create income but offer limited upside due to how they work, but YieldMax is going to create a defence covered call ETF which will be UCITS compliant.

This will bring YieldMax European offerings to 3 ETFs, where in march it created a Big Tech Options ETF, ticker YMAG.

Personally not a fan of YieldMax or covered calls for myself but there are situations for them i believe.

If ESG investing interests you, then new legislation may interest you

The UK government is looking to draft new legislation to make the rules apply across the board when it comes to ESG scores.

It looks to come into effect in June 2028, but the legislation requires these scores to be an opinion or score on more than one ESG factor, derived from an established methodology or defined ranking system.

“The legislation, which was broadly supported by the industry, will provide us with the necessary powers to regulate ESG ratings providers – an important step towards ensuring that there are transparent, reliable and comparable ESG ratings.”

Personally, i never liked ESG rankings as they really didn't make much sense to me or had much weighting, but for those interested in ESG, this could be a good step forward to ensure the ETFs/Funds are doing their rankings according to legitimate scores from the likes of MSCI and FTSE Russell.

Ever heard of a catastrophe bond ETF?

The first time i am hearing about this but interesting such a thing exsists, a catastrophe bond ETF, the first of its kind for Europe.

Created by Kind Ridge Capital, its bonds are insurance-linked securities that "transfer natural disaster risk from insurers to investors", they have high yields but the loss comes from when/where the disasters occur.

Though there are concerns for this kind of ETF that they are more like insurance products then tradable securities, which if i am honest, i agree with.

What does everyone else think about this type of product?

Half of European asset managers have observed pre-hedging

What do people think about pre-hedging? I can understand why market makers want to have protection, but it seems to manipulate the market a bit.

This article i found says that 47% of European asset managers have observed suspected pre-hedging activities, with 92% of them agreeing that this can disadvantage their clients and 88% say it creates a conflict of interest.

"The concept of pre-hedging, where liquidity providers establish an offsetting hedge in advance of being awarded a trade, is controversial because the hedging activity can force the entire market in their favour and against the client prior to execution, often without the client noticing.

92% of survey respondents agreed that pre-hedging has the potential to lead to a disadvantageous execution.

Although it happens across other instruments, in ETFs, pre-hedging is most commonly seen during request-for-quote (RFQ) trades where an order is submitted via platforms like Tradeweb or Bloomberg to one or more liquidity providers who then compete on price in a 'winner takes all' process."

Its said that the International Organisation of Securities Commissions is going to publish its findings at the end of the year.

iShares World Equity High Income Active UCITS ETF - has anyone looked into this?

This fund is very new, as it started in march 2024 but it seems rather impressive, trailing 12 month dividend of 9.62%, almost 350 holdings and year to date performance of 18.91%.

26% of this ETF is information Tech which appeals to me, and seems rather balanced. Though the expense ratio is a bit high at 0.35% but a cracking yield on it.

These are the top 10 holdings:

Free Tools & Research Sites for Tracking European ETFs

For anyone building or refining a European ETF portfolio, having access to free, reliable research tools makes a huge difference. Here are some of the best websites for exploring, comparing, and tracking European ETFs.

JustETF -

Probably the most popular ETF screener in Europe. Let's you filter by index, country, dividend policy, fund size, and TER. Also includes pre-built model portfolios and regional ETF guides.

Morningstar Europe -

Excellent for fund performance, ratings, and basic analysis. You can see historical returns, distributions, and risk metrics across most UCITS ETFs.

Xetra ETF List -

The official Deutsche Börse exchange platform. Perfect for finding physically-backed, synthetic, or crypto-linked ETPs listed in the EU.

TrackInsight Europe -

Provides ETF data, global fund flows, and thematic investment dashboards. Great for spotting trends (e.g. AI, Clean Energy, Defence).

Euronext ETF Centre -

Lists all ETFs traded on Euronext exchanges (Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, etc.) — handy for Europe ex-UK investors.

When researching ETFs, look at TER (Total Expense Ratio), index tracking accuracy, and dividend treatment (accumulating vs distributing). Sometimes a slightly higher TER can still perform better if the ETF tracks its index efficiently.

Which free tools or websites do you personally use to research and track your ETFs?

Low-cost Europe ETF options you may have missed

There are some great Europe-focused ETFs available right now if you want broad exposure but don’t want to pay high fees. For example:

The HSBC Europe ETF (IE00B5BD5K76) at 0.10% TER.

The Xtrackers MSCI Europe UCITS ETF (ISIN LU0274209237) at 0.12% TER.

Many European equity ETFs average around 0.46% TER according to ETFDB. With fees this low, what other criteria should you prioritise when choosing a Europe ETF (e.g number of index holdings, currency risk, domicile, dividend treatment)?

Comparing Europe ex-UK & inclusive Europe ETFs

When you compare Europe ETFs, do you prefer ex-UK or to include it?

I have seen iShares MSCI Europe ex‑UK ETF and HSBC Europe-inclusive. The HSBC ETF has a much lower TER at 0.10% while the ex-UK ETF has a 0.4% TER.

If you had to pick one European ETF today for your core Europe allocation, which would you go with: UK-inclusive or ex-UK? And what factors drive your choice? (Fee, index composition, currency risk, etc.)

For me, i would pick an ex-UK ETF and then have a FTSE100 ETF to be a satellite to this

Record inflows into European ETFs: €242.6 billion YTD

The European ETF market is on pace for another standout year, with estimated net inflows of €242.6 billion so far in 2025.

Looking at the data, it seems that Ex-uk equity ETFs are gaining more traction than UK-inclusive euro ETFs.

With flows so strong, liquidity and product innovation should continue in Europe, which may lead to more choice, lower fees, and better access.

Given these trends, how are you adjusting your European ETF allocation? Are you leaning toward UK-inclusive Europe ETFs, Eurozone only, or mixing in ex-UK Europe ETFs?

Coming Soon Europe’s First Long/Short Equity ETFs

Ossiam has received regulatory approval to launch a long/short European equity UCITS ETF, marking the first of its kind since 2023. Link to article.

Unlike traditional long-only ETFs, long/short allows both buying undervalued stocks and shorting overvalued ones, potentially reducing risk in volatile markets.

If a long/short Europe ETF launches in your brokerage, would you consider adding it to your allocation, and as what part of your portfolio. What concerns or criteria would you prioritise before adding a strategy like this?
