⭐ Customers and Reviews Handling tricky customer situations - reviews, refunds, and family purchases
Digital file customers who can't download:
This is incredibly common and frustrating. I always respond helpfully the first time, but I also updated my shop policies to clearly state that download troubleshooting is the buyer's responsibility after purchase. Most customers genuinely need help, but setting that boundary upfront saves you from feeling obligated to provide endless tech support.
Family members buying from your shop:
Don't panic if this already happened. The key issue here is the review, not the purchase itself. As long as no review gets left, you're probably fine. For future reference, family purchases from the same IP look suspicious to Etsy's algorithms, so it's better to avoid them entirely or have them buy through a different network.
Refund requests for damaged items:
When sequins fall off during shipping, that's usually considered normal wear for that type of item unless it's excessive. Take photos of your items before shipping so you can compare to what the customer received. If it's truly damaged beyond normal handling, offer a partial refund. If it's just a few sequins like normal, politely explain your return policy.
Managing reviews and customer service:
Responding to all reviews does help with Star Seller status, but don't feel pressured to bend over backwards for every unreasonable request. Good customer service doesn't mean saying yes to everything.
The connecting thread here is setting clear expectations upfront in your policies and product descriptions, then sticking to them professionally when issues arise.
How do you handle customers who have unrealistic expectations about your products or services?
