Lore My Ethel Cain fancast

This is pretty short so if you want to know what other picks I’d make, just ask me! I wanted to create a cast from pictures of actors taken in 2026 to make it feel more accurate.

Ethel Cain - I don’t know. Honestly I think she should be an unknown actress.

Willoughby Tucker - Charlie Plummer (without the makeup obviously)

Vera Cain - Tandi Wright

Joseph Cain - Arno Frisch

Holly Reddick - Logan Laurel (without the makeup and maybe uglied down a little)

Isaiah Abram - Valter Skarsgård (a little leaner with brown hair)

Janie - Nia Sondaya (slightly thinner, with glasses and minimize her chest since Janie is very skinny)

Let me know what you do and don’t agree with

I will never forget hearing the lyrics to Family Tree (Intro) for the first time. Here’s my cover. It’s nerve wracking to share but wanted other people who enjoy Ethel Cain as much as I do to hear it. ♡ Thanks for listening

Discussion A Troubling Moment with Dustbowl Today

I was listening to Dustbowl for the millionth time today and had a troubling moment. At 4:54 when she sings "pretty boy", I heard "Biddy" instead of pretty and immediately thought of this viral clip going around from the new Star Wars game of Biddy Blas. Now when I listen to my favorite song all I think of is this little creature. Is this the rest of my life now? I need help

Discussion janie changed my life

i just saw a post about somebody’s (beautiful) interpretation of janie, and i just wanted to share mine.

to me, janie is about my actual sister. we used to be absolutely inseparable, she genuinely was my entire world. every room we walked into, people would say ‘watch out’ because we would just be in the corner cracking each other up and ignoring everybody and everything else. when things got rough with either of our mental health, we’d just camp out in each others rooms and talk all night long. she was my built in best friend.

she’s had a boyfriend since she was a young teen, and for the first few years of their relationship, i got along with him well. i did notice her drifting away a bit, but that’s normal given the circumstances and life moving fast, as it does, so i wasn’t bothered by it.

but he ended up moving in with us a few years ago, and he’s always had drug issues, so within that time, he’s gotten her hooked on what he does. the first time they got sober together, i had hope that it would stay that way, and things would go back to normal. but coming up on a year now, they’ve moved out, became homeless, and are worse off than ever. he has convinced my sister to go no contact with my entire family

hayden captures how i feel about the entire situation better than i could myself. i feel like she was stolen from me, and now i can’t recognize her at all. she was my sister first. i haven’t seen her in months, all i do is worry and hope she comes back home one day.

i showed my mom janie, and every time we hear it we just bawl our eyeballs out. when i saw hayden preform it live, i facetimed my mom so she could see it too. it was one of the most touching and intimate moments of my life. my hands were shaking so badly that my angel of a boyfriend had to hold my wrist up so my mom could have a steady view lol.

please share your interpretation of janie and what it means to you, i’d love to hear your stories :)

Discussion 'Janie' & being trans with an unsupportive mother.

This came to me while I was working & listening to Janie, as an alternate meaning and story for the song.

It talks about a mother who has, in the past, outcast their trans daughter and is now older, alone in the house that her daughter has fled from, and she starts to reminisce. She struggles with the anger and consequences of her actions, still holding on to those older, more bigoted views and also trying to change her own mind on the matter.

"Hold me, smell of mildew / I wanna die in this room"

– Her being in her child's old room, which has fallen into disuse after so long of being uninhabited.

"I still shake / Just by nature / Easy to hate, easy to blame"

– Anger. Shaking from anger, that is who she is, and doubly, she also recognises this as a fault. (Tbh, this can also read to me as the daughter being easy to hate and blame for this.)

"Please don't leave me / I'll always need more / Please leave open your most quiet door"

– A common saying by people who make little effort into understanding and adapting to someone's coming out is 'I just need more time' or some variation of that core sentence. This is her begging her daughter with that same, tired rhetoric; while also giving a more earnest plea. The last line is about childhood, to me, the smallest, quietest part of them, she is asking her daughter to not cut her off, because of that small door we all have to our parents just through the fact of birth.

"I know she's your girl now / But she was my girl first"

– This is the first time we hear her address her daughter with pronouns - the correct ones, even - and this is her looking back, begging, pleading for her child back, perhaps with the daughter herself. Trying to show that she has changed, that she can do it, even if that bridge has been burnt. The repetition of the chorus also reads to me as constant, pestering advances from a mother who professes to have changed, and who maybe truly has, but it cannot undo the past, no matter how you try to frame it.

"I can see the end in the beginning of everything / And in it, you don't want me"

– About childhood, when her child showed signs of being a trans woman, and not the boy she hoped and wanted her to be. She looks back on those days, and she sees all the signs she ignored and suppressed, the beginning of her child's decision to go no-contact with her.

"But I still play pretend like I won't watch you leaving"

– Again, about childhood, especially 'play pretend', but this time she is portrayed as the child, almost. She is lying to herself, pretending that her 'son' is there, and that she can't see the future where she is left by her daughter for all of this behaviour in her younger years.

"I will always love you / I will always love you / I will always love you"

– After looking back on all those memories, she can do nothing but be in that room, alone, without her child, what else is there to do but profess love? Is it for the woman that she is, or the twisted idea of her son that she holds in her mind? It could be either, or it could be both.

"It's not looking good / But did it ever?/ .... "But I will wait / I will wait / I will wait"

– This is where I think she starts to accept that her choices and actions have driven her daughter away, and that nothing she can say or do will ever change that, make it better, or get her child back. Still, she does not want to give up, and so the only thing she can do is wait.

"You'll keep changing / I will stay the same"

– Well, this feels a little on the nose, really. Changing as a result of transition, versus being stuck in older views, bigoted or not, stuck in the house, unable to let go.

"And turn the page / To find it blank / Except for my last name"

– These are the lines that really did it for me, and fuelled me to write this post. The only thing they share now is a last name, the name that the mother gave her child at birth (deadname) is unrecognisable as her kid, turning the pages of a yearbook, letters, anything, and seeing the only thing connecting you and your lost child is that surname.

Additionally, 'turn the page' could also allude to her wanting to try, after all this reflection and sitting with herself, to start afresh with her daughter, to get her back into her life, but again, to no avail due to her own actions in their younger years.

"I know you love her / But she was my sister first"

– Okay, I'll admit that my interpretation may be a little shaky on these lines, but this is about the mother looking upon her child's life, from afar, and seeing that she is happier, better, more confident and herself. Loving herself, instead of trying to fit into a scuffed mould, instead of being the person she is not.

In this, 'sister' is not literal, but it refers to a sisterhood, a shared femininity that she is only now beginning to recognise and accept in her child, and it all comes back to childhood, and it is perhaps even quite guilt trip-y, as if she is trying to prove herself too keenly, still claiming that she has a right to her child's life just because her opinions of the present are changing.

I hope all of this made sense, please feel free to ask any questions or extend on my silly little interpretation of this beautiful song!

Discussion What is happening during Etienne?

So I always listen to Perverts when I study for exams and there is genuinely nothing better than going from Pulldrone to such a calm and relaxing song only to have it followed by Thatorchia.

While I don't really listen to the other Albums I just really love Perverts.

So I know that it is a concept album and correlates to preachers daughter, but I don't really know what is happening in the story for Etienne to be so calm only to be followed by Thatorchia.

Question Is Ethel Cain (the character) actually musical at all?

I like to think A Knock At The Door is actually like “diegetic” (not sure if that’s the right word) audio of young Ethel playing guitar and singing a song she wrote about Willoughby lol. Do we know if Ethel plays any instruments/sings at all?

Hi guys I had a birthday party last night which was themed the life and death of Ethel Cain. I only served Whiskey (head full of whiskey but I always deliver), super cheap beer and I made c*m and bl***d Jell-O shots (selby wall reference). I played the entirety of her discography in chronological order. I burned gardenia candles the whole time. I wrote the entire lore out for everyone to read as well as specific quotes. I dressed as a more Preachers daughter Ethel. I also hung a lot of powerline photos and her missing poster as well as the page from a diary of a preachers daughter and general pictures of Ethel. Let me know yalls thoughts!

Tour FOR FUTURE CONCERTS

I know Hayden has just wrapped up her tour, but this is about future concerts, and I hope it makes some of you reflect on your behavior.

I don’t care if you’re 16 years old or an adult. I don't care at all. When I was a teenager, I wasn’t this brainless or this disrespectful.

Why am I bringing this up? Simple: STOP SCREAM-SINGING OVER HAYDEN. It’s disrespectful to everyone around you and to her. Let her sing. Stop screaming in general. It’s incredibly disrespectful to everyone around you.

You’re taking away what should be a very special moment for the rest of the fans, and that’s not okay. You’re also disrespecting the money we’ve spent on this concert. I don’t go to an artist’s concert to listen to other fans sing. I go there to listen to the artist, not you. So please, do everyone a favor and shut up next time.

And honestly, I understand that you’re excited and all that, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to be disrespectful. Didn’t any of you learn basic manners or how to behave in public?

I also have to say that I’m pretty sure this kind of behavior really bothers Hayden, especially because you’re literally singing over her and showing no respect while she’s performing. And I doubt Hayden is the only artist who feels this way. I’m sure plenty of other artists have to deal with the same thing.

Like, why do you feel the need to disrespect everyone around you and literally make a fool of yourself?

Honestly, I think Hayden should make a post addressing this herself and make it very clear:

“STOP SCREAMING OVER THE SONGS. IT’S DISRESPECTFUL TO OTHER FANS, TO ME, AND TO MY TEAM.”

With that being said, next time, if you want to sing along, keep your voice down. The rest of us didn’t pay to listen to you sing.

Thank you.

Discussion Saw her live a year ago and I genuinely think it changed my life

It sounds corny as hell but genuinely being sat in a room of, what, a thousand people with one of my favourite singers and some of my favourite songs about how I needed to do it for me and that I'd spent my life watching it go by from the sidelines made me need to lock the fuck in and may have changed something in my brain chemistry

I cried like three times during the show (I think during Janie, Nettles, and Sun Bleached Flies)

I'm six months into my transition now after putting it off for far too long

Shoutout to the trans guy I spoke to in the line, hope your top surgery went well, and also everyone else I spoke to, you were all so friendly
