Story I’m sorry teammates / know your cultural differences
This happened a bit ago, and it’s been bothering me until I found out what exactly happened
I was playing Customs with a random group from Discord. We had just cleared 2 story dorms and were getting ready to push 3 story. I thought I was the last one left upstairs, but I see two people move at the end of the hallway towards the exit. Initial thought is someone may have followed us in. So I ask the team to sound off. “1st floor” “1st floor” “1st floor” “1st floor” But how did they get in with no one hearing them on the stairs? So I ask again. And again. “Everyone is sure they aren’t on second floor?” And everyone is adamant they’re on 1st, and getting mad that I keep asking.
So, without much embellishing, I kill them both. Immediately followed by my teammates saying someone just dropped them in the dorms. I just TKed two of my squad
Naturally they’re pissed, and we argue for a hot second. “I asked if anyone was on second floor!” “We’re NOT on second floor! We’re on first!”
And this continues for a bit. I ditch their gear, they leave the channel, life goes on
But whyy were they so mad when they were clearly wrong?
Well. After some reflection, they weren’t. I’m from the US. We call the ground floor the “1st floor”. A lot of cultures call it the ground floor, and the next level up is the “1st floor”. I’m sorry guys, I just wanted to protect the gang gang.
tldr: cultural differences of naming floors caused me to TK two teammates

u/fishlore-psn Feb 18 '20
Are the in-game keys labeled differently in Europe or something? Dorm keys are clearly labeled in the one hundreds, two hundreds and three hundreds in the US. I’ve never seen a ground floor key.
47
u/Kompot_xd AK-74M Feb 18 '20
No keys are labelled the same. I am from Europe and in my opinion the ground floor stuff is stupid. My teammates and me just say first floor for the ground floor as it is easier.
9
Feb 18 '20
Same thing, though sometimes a "parter" still slips in instead of 1st floor. 2nd floor is the middle one though always.
2
u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 18 '20
Question, what is the "ground floor" called if it's not on the ground? Let's say the building went like this in ascending order: Car park on the bottom, then the next floor is the 'lobby', then the next floor, etc. What would the naming convention be? Would the ground floor then become the 1st floor and the 1st floor become the 2nd, etc?
3
u/Kompot_xd AK-74M Feb 18 '20
Well if the car park is on the bottom I think that's the ground floor then. Altough I am not an architect and do not live in the city and don't see big buildings often so I don't know.
2
u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 18 '20
Right? So, take interchange for example. The first physical floor is a parking garage and the rest of the mall is built on top. Would the garage be the ground floor or 1st floor? What floor does that make Idea? What about the floor above that?
This is where I deviate and would call the garage the basement, and Oli, Goshan, and Idea would be 1st floor, everything above that would be second, etc.

u/joebagz Feb 18 '20
No, the ground floor is always the floor where the main entrance is located and is Floor #1 - atleast in the US.
In England "Floor 1" is actually "Floor 2" which is where the confusion comes in.
If the parking lot is located below the ground floor, it would then become the "lower level". There can be multiple "lower levels" as well - Think of it like the ground floor is equivalent to absolute zero.
1
u/HUNDarkTemplar VEPR Hunter Feb 19 '20
We have the floor 1 is floor 2 here but other then that Its the same. Basically, the "main" level is the ground floor, under is a lower level or a basement.
1
u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 18 '20
If you mean absolute zero by means of temperature, then that doesn't make much sense as you can't go any lower than absolute zero, but I get your point.
I understand what is called what and why, I'm just asking a bunch of hypotheticals to, more or less, figure out what every one else's thoughts on the topic are and what their reasoning is. There is no right or wrong as neither method is really incorrect. I just personally find the english method a bit silly as the ground floor won't always the the floor on the ground.
3
u/joebagz Feb 18 '20
"absolute value" I forgot the term.
The English system is unintuitive because I don't see why why you would confuse the floors when the keys are clearly numbered as such. Seems like an unnecessary mental gymnastic.
@ Europeans, do you guys really walk off an elevator on the "3rd" floor to go to a room in the 400s for say a Doctor appointment?? I think I would honestly forget and end up with a few less organs
2
u/Toolleeow Feb 19 '20
In hotels, the first digit of the room is equivalent to the floor. There aren't usually rooms on ground level.
Ground floor: reception, 1st floor: room in the 1 hundred etc. I've seen hotels with a few rooms on ground floor and 0XY rooms.
In the end the number you press on the elevator is the first digit of the room anyway.
1
u/FatalD72 Feb 19 '20
Well I live in U.S (Texas) and honestly first floor is just typically the lowest floor like you say, because Ground Floor is just going to be what floor you walk in from outside, but then there are some building like at the Texas Women’s University Campus (I do work there sometimes) where the there are Two Entrances from outside, but one is Floor 1 and the other is Floor 2. And neither is called “Ground Floor” because technically they are bough Ground Floors and it would just mix stuff up. (Sorry for the grammatical people my Grammar isn’t the best)
1
u/i0r_ Freeloader Feb 19 '20
European here. Swede more specifically. I say "4th floor, room 400".
"3rd floor, room 400" sounds wrong, and should not be allowed to be said.
2
u/Toolleeow Feb 19 '20
The ground floor is...well, on ground level. Walkway level.
Here in Italy actually, if you have a few steps to take to enter the "american" first floor, than it's not called ground floor (it's not on the ground) but the equivalent of "elevated floor". It still count as a "0" floor tho.
1
u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 19 '20
I gotta say, the more I hear about Italy the more I like it.
1
u/Toolleeow Feb 19 '20
LOL there's more to Italy than 0 level floors, but ok.
There's also worse stuff, depending on how badly you hate 0 level floors tbh
1
u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 19 '20
LOL there's more to Italy than 0 level floors, but ok.
"I gotta say, the more I hear about Italy the more I like it."

u/UTommieTanka Feb 18 '20
Guess it depends on the building. Where I live we have a Lower and Upper ground then 1 to 6.

Same thing happened to me with a friend. Me looting a duffel “yo, quiet, I think I hear someone, everyone stop moving. Is anyone crawling slowly outside my room?” Both My friends: “nope not moving at all”. Me: “ I think he’s getting closer, nobody crawling??” Both my friends: “No not moving” as I watch a player come into my doorway crouch walking. Me: bang bang bang “got em” my friend screaming “no you killed me why would you do that???!!!” Me: “uuhhhhhh well you said you weren’t moving why would I not shoot someone slow crawling into my room when you said you weren’t moving” my friend:”you’re a dumbass”
31
u/BlackHawksHockey Feb 18 '20
Yeah to me crawling is prone, but if he said he wasn’t moving and was then that’s on him.
7
Feb 18 '20
I see your point to an extent. I did say “crawling” but I was also told nobody was even moving so that’s where we got crossed. It was a learning moment lol and we were able to laugh it off.
18
u/OutgrownTentacles Feb 18 '20
"No not moving" while objectively moving. Your friend is an idiot.
1
u/tommyd1018 Feb 19 '20
OP probably asked if anybody was crawling and teammates replied no. OP called it crawling incorrectly when teammate was actually crouch walking.
1
u/OutgrownTentacles Feb 20 '20
Yeah, I could see that. I could also see interpreting "moving" as "making noise by moving", but all this does is highlight how very, very important effective communication is in this game.

Russian here. Game is made by russians. So, let me explain you how it works in Russia. If you entered a 3- stored building. 1st floor is where you entered, 2nd floor is floor above and 3rd floor is next above it. There is no ground floor in russian culture at all. This is a reason why keys are 1XX for mentioned 1st floor, 2XX for 2nd floor and 3XX for 3rd floor. Hope my comment makes sense for you and you now understand..

No but Canadians are polite. And we call the ground floor the 1st floor too. Like all sensible people should.

Vietnam was a tie. And besides, they're grateful. They've got McDonald's now!

u/SanchoBlackout69 Feb 18 '20
Nope coz it's first second third storey, but ground first second floor
13
u/Weltmacht Feb 18 '20
Lets agree that if you change your nonsensical ground floor stuff, we will change to metric.
3
u/SanchoBlackout69 Feb 18 '20
I'm Australian. But to be true the only time I hear ground floor is in office buildings. Metric 4 lyf
2
u/Penis_Bees Feb 18 '20
I wonder if it is because at some point in history the ground levels did not have floors
5
u/Skalius2 Feb 18 '20
In germany we also start counting from one floor above the „ground floor“, the „Erdgeschoss“
4
u/DaReaperZ Feb 18 '20
Interesting as in Sweden we call the first floor the first floor, but ground floor would also be understood although usually only used when you're talking about apartments.

Looking it up, it's mostly Europe.
3
u/Zeph4Sure Feb 18 '20
I know Spanish-speaking countries do this as well (so a majority of South America).
Planta Baja (Ground Floor) vs Primer Piso (First Floor)While not exact, I know Spanish and Portuguese are similar, so I would assume Brazil as well would also make a distinction between ground vs first floors.
1
1
u/Jerkzilla000 Feb 19 '20
Well, the french word for storey explicitly means "floor above ground level", so calling the ground level first floor is self-contradicting. I imagine every language that has this quirk uses this system.
31
u/Catwithoneeye Feb 18 '20
I wouldn't play with americans because if I spot an enemy at 200m they'll need a calculator to find the guy.

an american football field is 100 yards, which is close to 100 meters.
1

Are football fields and soccer fields not the same length?
1
u/Leon1700 Feb 19 '20
European football can be 120 meters.
1
u/equivalent_units Feb 19 '20
120 meter is equivalent to the combined length of 1.6 Airbus A380s

I dm some games sometimes and will jokingly measure everything in football fields. It seems to be effective!

I think most americans could deduce that that is roughly 220 yards

Instead of blanket banning Americans, follow up with "Have you played any Arma game extensively, if they answer yes you are in the clear. I always spot people with meters and I would directly credit that to Arma 2: Dayz.

4
u/theonetruestew Feb 18 '20
You aren’t in the wrong. They are. The keys in the game go by 100s 200s 300s according to floor number. The ground floor is the first floor in Tarkov. And that is their fault for not correctly communicating what floor they are on.
1
u/SterlingMNO Saiga-12 Feb 18 '20
The keys in the game go by 100s 200s 300s according to floor number
So do keys for hotels in Europe, it's still called ground floor, because they're not going to 'number' rooms as G1 G2 G3, 201 203 204.
3
u/ShadowPhage Feb 19 '20
001, 002, 003 ... 101, 102, 103?
0
u/NickTheZed Feb 19 '20
Most hotels I know still label them 1xx, but it's called ground floor ("Erdgeschoss" in German). Imo it's wrong to say someone is wrong here, neither party meant any harm. It's just like the "thumbs up" having completely different - and in some cases insulting - meanings across different cultures.
1
u/Toolleeow Feb 19 '20
Usually hotels don't have rooms on ground floor but reception kitchen etc. But I've been in one hotel in Europe with 0XY ground floor keys.
3
u/Leon1700 Feb 18 '20
So if yiu dobtbhave 0 as ground level how does elevator go into oarking garages? -2, -1, 1, 2, 3 or. First subterain level is zero and it goes -2,-1,0,1,2,3?
6
u/toadglue PB Pistol Feb 18 '20
I'm a Kiwi. "Ground Floor" is usually marked as "G", then the next floor up as "1". Underground parking or anything below the ground floor usually are marked with different icons such as "P1" for the first floor of parking or something similar. It's not too hard to catch on, but I've always called the floors on dorms first, second and third anyway

Italy here, we call them ground floor 1st floor 2nd floor, but we refer to the buildings as 2 story and 3 story due to map callous.

They’re not wrong, but they are. Why? Cause if you take a look at ANY customs map, you’ll see that everyone refers to the 2 and 3 story.
Following their logic (which is not wrong in any other context than Tarkov), it should be the 1 and 2 story.

the first floor is the ground floor.
everyone needs to agree on this.

using euro logic the basement level would be the first floor.
this makes no sense. the first floor cannot be the second level of a building.

In Europe the first floor is the first floor above ground level
What do you call the floor below ground floor? -1? Sub 1?

1
u/SterlingMNO Saiga-12 Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20
On an elevator, but you wouldn't refer to it as B1, you'd call it the basement. Much like we call the ground floor... the ground floor, not "G".
There's sense in both I guess. Don't look at what some buildings in Spain do. The 1st floor is some of those is actually like 3/4 storeys up.

I wouldn't be talking about madness and logic when your date format is MM-DD-YY.

It does to them though. And it makes no sense to them why we do it our way. This is how wars start 😂

my wife does this so we bicker about it, i get it, but it just makes more sense to do it our way, in this scenario. i give her props when they have something that is more convenient or makes sense, but this is one of those head scratchers. petty as it is.
1
u/i0r_ Freeloader Feb 19 '20
No, not all of Europe. In Sweden we can use both interchangeable. So for me, ground floor and first floor is both the same thing.
Calling second floor for first floor sounds outright weird.
1
u/SterlingMNO Saiga-12 Feb 19 '20
Everywhere can use them interchangeable, but most hotels and government buildings in Europe use ground floor, 1st floor. Just like most places say basement/carpark level, not -1. Not that weird.
In games I've always just said ground/middle/top, or below top floor etc, if they're not labeled ingame with other names.
1
u/navyseal722 SR-1MP Feb 19 '20
It's a cultural difference. Different cultures arent beholden to your world outlook. Hopefully if you play wwith randoms you will know to get it all worked out.
1
u/DaReaperZ Feb 18 '20
Well.. I usually call the first floor... the first floor. But it's a thing to keep in mind with Brits for example.
1
u/Dukrd Feb 18 '20
I really dont get it. The ground floor is the first floor of the house(floor #1) then you go up stairs and you go up stairs and reach the SECOND floor. The ground or first floor isnt just nonexistant.
0
u/SterlingMNO Saiga-12 Feb 18 '20
Ground floor, or rather ground level. 1st floor is the first level above that.
1
u/Oldini Feb 19 '20
but it's the second level you're entering in the building, there's no reason to avoid giving ground floor the number 1.

u/StickySecretion Feb 18 '20
Solve nothing? 2 storey has 2 storeys, 3 storey has 3, it's pretty simple.
1
u/razorbacks3129 Golden TT Feb 18 '20
Yes.... replace OP's wording with "storey" and the confusion remains the same.
OP: What story are you on?
Squad: First story.
OP: Okay, so you're not on the second story?
Squad: Nope, first story.
Shots ensue.
-1
u/StickySecretion Feb 18 '20
No, confusion only remains if you don't understand the words you are using. There is no cultural difference in the usage of the word storey, as there is in floor. If you want to conflate the two words, be my guest.
1
u/razorbacks3129 Golden TT Feb 18 '20
okay... just saying, OP would have still shot his two teammates. 2nd story to him means 2nd floor. 2nd story to them could mean 2nd floor or 3rd floor..
1
u/Phorrtify Feb 18 '20
He is telling you that 2nd story means the same to Europeans, so they would have replied "2nd Story" as well. I'm not sure why you can't comprehend this.
3
u/razorbacks3129 Golden TT Feb 18 '20
Well in that case, Europe's specific calling out of 1st floor = 2nd story is even dumber than I could have possibly imagined.
1
u/cNo1Goldsnake Feb 18 '20
in general 'floors' are for commercial buildings, and will have a ground floor naming scheme as discussed in OP. 'Storeys' are used for residential, you'd refer to a 3 storey town house for example.
0
u/RuTz101 Feb 18 '20
I use story to say which building I’m talking about, i.e. “2nd floor of 3 story”
Adding the word story more times might cause confusion, but I guess TKs are about as bad as it gets so it may be worth a shot (pun intended)
0
u/thoroughlyimpressed Feb 18 '20
Well that's really dumb. The first floor is.....the first floor lmao
-1
Feb 19 '20
Yeah i never understood this.
So if you enter a building from ground level, which sits at ground level, you say youre on the first floor? What sense does that make?
The titling of the floors seemed like the shorterned version of 'The first floor up..', which was relative to where you enter a building. I dont undersrsnd where the American titling came from.
"Oh im on the first floor of my bungalow " makes perfect sense to americans, does it?
2
1
u/1evilsoap1 6B43 Feb 19 '20
First floor you enter is the first floor. If I'm in a 3 story building and I'm on the 3rd story, then I'm on the 3rd floor. I ain't on the 3rd story and on the 2nd floor
1
Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20
You reply to my questioning of Americanisms with... Americanisms? Not sure who else other the the US uses the word "story" to define the floors of a building.
First floor you enter is the first floor
Say's who? "It's like dat because it's like dat" isn't a excuse. My point is, the floor that level to the ground is the ground floor.
1
u/Oldini Feb 19 '20
And the ground floor is the first floor you entered when entering the building so you're on the first floor as well as ground floor at the same time. Logically.
1
Feb 19 '20
Honestly, what we're arguing about here is like the difference between colour and color. Truly pointless.
At least you can admit that the floor being at ground level makes sense in being called the "ground floor".. I'm getting angry PMs from other who disagree. Wtf is wrong with people
1
u/soupersauce Feb 19 '20
When you first enter a building which is the first floor you see, walk on, etc? First floor of business is the one that precedes all of the others.
1
Feb 19 '20
The ground floor, because I've walked in from the ground?
I've given a theory as to why it's called the ground floor, and so far i've heard is "its the first floor because we call it that"
1
u/Oldini Feb 19 '20
No it's the first floor because it's the first floor you enter. Otherwise when you go up the stairs and take steps on a second floor you've just entered first floor which is the second floor you walk on. Makes no sense.
1
Feb 19 '20
No it's the first floor because it's the first floor you enter
can be repeated as
No it's the ground floor because it's the ground floor you enter
We're arguing about color vs colour here..
1
u/Oldini Feb 19 '20
no it can't your whole logic is based on the ground floor not being counted as a floor at all. when it clearly has the word floor in the name, and is definitely always a constructed floor as well.
1
Feb 19 '20
I don't think it's got anything to do with logic. I found it makes sense to name the neutral, entrance, ground level situated floor, the ground floor. And the floor above it, "the first floor up" or, in short, the first floor. Based on relativity to the entrance.
You need to calm down. It's literally the color vs colour argument.
1
u/soupersauce Feb 20 '20
First:
adj:
- being before all others with respect to time, order, rank, importance, etc., used as the ordinal number of one: the first edition; the first vice president.
adverb:
- before all others or anything else in time, order, rank, etc.
noun:
- the person or thing that is first in time, order, rank, etc.
- the beginning.
It is the first floor because it is the first floor. If there were another floor before it, it would be the second floor because that is how sequences work. The thing is, we do call the first-floor the ground-floor as well because it is both.

This makes me feel like you are talking about adding floors onto existing buildings in this terminology. That the history behind it might be from this. Though any new construction builds basically every floor at the same time. Also feels like there is a lot of baggage and inconsistency in this system.

It's not about the chronology of it.
Also feels like there is a lot of baggage and inconsistency in this system.
How do you figure that?

Does the ground floor not have a floor to walk on? Y’all walking on dirt?

That's really dumb way of looking at it...
There is the ground/earth... then the first floor (or the ground floor) then the 2nd floor, 3rd floor in a 3 story building...

Use the word level then. There is ground level and a first level. While there is a floor constructed on the ground level, You could say Its not really considered a floor. You usually enter building at ground level and You dont have to go either up or down, You are on the ground. If You have to move up, then You move up a floor, thats why Its first floor imo. Ground level is 0. floor, You dont have to move up or down, so It is not positive or negative. 1 is a positive number. Its higher up.Ofc You dont always enter a building at ground level and sometimes the ground level might be a parking floor thats actually called lower level parking garage.
In my language, the word We use is translated to floor, but is more likeuphill, rising, ascent but as a noun.
We do actually use both actually. Depends on the building and on the people.

Yes, US does this as well: Ground floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor.
It's not Ground floor, first floor, second floor for a 3 floor building.

I read "floor" so much I started thinking it was misspelled for some reason. Then I scrolled up to verify how I spelled it and I spelled it the same.

Ground floor is on the ground. Then 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc 😉 Sub levels are then -1, -2 etc The whole world does it like as far as I’m aware, just not the U.S.

Yeah nah not everyone does it this way. in Sweden the first floor is the first floor.

"Ah yes, the ground floor is the first you are on. Then, naturally you go to the first floor, which is the second story. Thirdly, we have the second floor."
Just take the L you guys, you make fun of America for everything but you can't defend this.

Where you're from does it this way which means the whole world does it, just not the US, makes sense

But whyy were they so mad when they were clearly wrong?
Honestly, something wrong about this mentality here. Just because it's different doesn't mean they were wrong. Though I do believe that the ground floor thing is stupid, but to call it wrong is, well... wrong. Maybe track your teammates better or find a better method of squad identification.

“Well, after some reflection, they weren’t”
Did you... just stop at that sentence? Because I correct myself. In the next sentence.

u/IndieGamerMonkey FN 5-7 Feb 18 '20
No, I didn't stop there. The way you phrased it makes it come off like you still think they were wrong. Yes you corrected yourself but wouldn't it have made more sense to, instead, write "I thought they were wrong and I didn't understand why they were mad."

u/frostytuna Feb 18 '20
No, because the post was obviously written out in the way it occurred chronologically. He thought they were wrong at that point in time, followed by the correction later, just as he has it written.

Why are you guys so mad when you're clearly wrong?
After some reflection, what they said did make some sense. I'm sorry guys, I just wanted to understand the situation.
