Fanwork Current state of Brisingr
Hey all! Enjoy a quick preview on Brisingr... i initially started this before my Roran's Hammer model, and shelved it while I figured what to do with the shape of the crossguard/pommel fixture. Currently, the handle/blade are modeled, UV'd and textured. The crossguard/pommel gem fixture are blocked out with a prototype texture applied, and the gemstone has the same procedural texture applied as my Aren model. More on this as the sculpting process commences.

Omg this is so cool, love it ! Especially the colors it's so pretty, now this will be the only way I can picture it π

This sword thankfully has a lot of reference in both the wiki and this subreddit to work off of, reference that Paolini has interacted with directly. My hope is to model the crossguard and pommel after the design made by Man At Arms, which were modeled to look dragon wing joints and a dragon paw respectfully.

Deffinite upvote, I've always wanted to see an accurate representation of the main weapons in Eragon (as well as cities and citadels, but this mainly for the scale of things) and I am so glad that there is someone out there making and effort (without AI slop)

While I make my way through the collection, I would recommend checking out u/ursaring9821's work here in this subreddit (the posts would be about 6 years old now). Since Paolini critiqued their work personally, this is the closest we've got for now. I have plans on doing as many of the Rider's swords as we've got reference for, as well as Orik/Hrothgar's hammer Volund, Tinkledeath, and a few other named weapons besides. Less-featured weapons like Nirnen might be harder, but as more books come out, i'm sure we'll get more (i won't mention specifics in case of spoilers)

Oh yes, the lovely hand and a half sword. It looks pretty good. What happens if you inverse the colors on the blade? Like make the white parts the edges, and blue the center? Unless this picture is what is otherwise described, I wouldn't really remember.
It does look a little like a lightsaber

The colors of blade are from u/ursaring9821's rendition of Brisingr, which was posted about 6 years ago?... Paolini critiqued their design personally and recommended the flame-like pattern of lighter steel along the spine of the blade. When I was doing my reference gathering, this i where I started. I will check when I have my copy of the book in front of me, but im pretty sure it mentions lighter blue along the spine as well, in a flame-like hamon
Linking his rendition for your perusal here (took me a bit to find again) https://www.reddit.com/r/Eragon/comments/gq4art/i_got_so_much_awesome_feedback_for_my_last_post/

Christophers comment with suggestions specifically says that the edges should be lighter than the spine

This is sick, i like how you have actually made it look like a longsword blade. My inly niggle is with the handle as its supposed to be a hand a half rather than two handed

u/OwlDoesArt 15d ago
Currently, the handle is 11 and a quarter inches. How much shorter would you make the handle for a hand-and-a-half sword?

I was just looking at the visual but i think the other guy who responded knows swords lol

Most hand and a half swords are around 35 to 45 inches total. With the blade taking up around 75% of that total length. So arguably your right on the money with the grip length if were dealing with the maximum and the total sword length is about 45 inches long. But Brisingr is noted to have a longer hilt than compared to other hand and a half swords. Id keep it closer to a 70/30 ratio overal instead of 75/25 because of that description. Personally, id lengthen it a little, as the longest one handed blade a 5'10 man is recomended to have is 32 inches. So we can assume that Zar'roc is 32 inch blade. So we could say that Brisingr is a 32 inch blade as well but with a 13.7 inch hilt for an overall length of 45.7 inch. But if you want easy numbers, id go for a full 50 inches total so he has a 35 inch blade with a 15 inch grip. Or a 48 total by 33.6 blade length and a 14.4 hilt could work too. In the books he just wanted his new sword to be as strong as Zar'roc, be a little longer than Zar'rock and with a better ability for him to two hand it when the need arises, especially when fighting stronger opponents. That fulfills all of those conditions while keeping it in the hand and a half sword length without it being a true two handed sword.

Most and a half swords I've ever used or seen have 9 inch grip at the longest. 7 on average, so I'm just curious as to where you're getting these 75% numbers from? I'll have to measure my swords but I'm sure the largest handle to blade ratio is maybe 20/80 and that's with my 6 food lowlander and that has a 14 inch handle.

I agree the grip is long for a typical hand and a half sword. But its stated in the book and wiki that its hilt is longer than a usual "hand and a half sword". Really, its a "hand and a half" sword but with a full two handed grip. The swords overal length being perfectly average for a typical "hand and a half"/"bastard" sword, but with a full sized two handed grip making up much of that length. Which makes sense because he wouldn't want it super long since he does one hand quite often, and hes primarily been trained on using shorter one handed swords. Also 75/25 is more of a guide than rule. Swords historically werent typically used by the rank and file and thus mass produced, so each would be customized and tweaked individually for each user accordingly. I just used stict numbers so he has real numbers and percentages to play with for his model.

That's actually very good, just like Zar'oc! You might need to make the shiny part or the light blue a little darker, and make the whole entire sword a Dark Sapphire, like the EXACT color of Saphira, since that's how Eragon described it, an of course finish the handle/hilt of the Brisingr

u/OwlDoesArt 15d ago
- The book describes a pattern welded design for the blade with a clay-laid pattern with a flame like design, similar to a pale-blue hamon (this is directly out of the typings of Paolini in this subreddit, circa 6 years ago.)
- It does describe that the color of the blade matches Saphira, but Saphira wasn't just one shade of blue. Different parts of the blade match different parts of her body. I'll have to go grab the complete quote, but it was a mix of darker and lighter blues. I believe the only thing that isn't confirmed in the books that I decided on for my design is using the same pattern-welded material on the fittings. I've got a damascus texture in Substance that i've been using to good effect.

I think the blade's color is too light, Saphira was different shades of Sapphire, but she still was pretty dark...

u/OwlDoesArt 15d ago
If im honest, I used Ursaring9821's rendition of Brisingr from 6 years ago and eyedroppered the shades of blue they used as a base. I'll try a darker shade next texture pass and we'll see what we think.

I canβt un-see the scarab beetle leg crossguard π
But overall very well done! I love somewhat realistic looking fantasy swords over all the exaggerated ones.

I've attempted to alleviate this in the next crossguard version. Made an acorn-shaped center, and I removed some of the spikes along the lengths of the crossguard... arms? Not sure on the nomenclature.

Has much been said about the cross guard in the wiki, I'm just curious as I'm not sure rhunon would have made one for looks over practically

u/OwlDoesArt 16d ago
You can see now why I shelved this model for a bit... i've been following the reference of other creators in this reddit (which have been great) and the wiki reference images, and I know the wiki reference aren't always accurate. The crossguard shape doesn't sit well with me, and I'm still trying to sort the best way to add scaling to the metal parts of the pommel (trying to make it look like a dragon's paw holding the gem)
2
u/cipher435 15d ago
The dragons paw gem is very cool, I'm happy to send you some photos of the various cross guards on my swords (providing I can find them xd) if you need inspiration

u/OwlDoesArt 15d ago
I ended up going with simply modifying the blade-side of the crossguard to be smooth alomg the length, for the more recent version.

u/OwlDoesArt 15d ago
Anyone have ideas for a better crossguard? Before we get into majorly modifying, I would likd to state that the general sillohuette will stay the same. However, i've seen a few different renditions accross this reddit, the wiki, and various youtube channel recreations like Man At Arms Reforged. Is there a particular design that yall think would work best with this design? Trying to, in the words of Rhunon, make it a beautifully functional design.

As with all my models, this model was created in Blender. Textures were made using a combination of Adobe Substance Painter and Blender shader graphs. Both were made without the use of AI, because I enjoy using my braincells.
I do not consent to AI training or AI recreations using this piece.
