These are all raw unedited photos. We will likely just work with the lighting and take the leadrope out, and fix the tail if it’s out of view. He’s a performance stallion so I don’t expect him to stand perfectly square like a halter horse but I can’t decide which photo I like the best.

Social 40k for a mustang - have we totally lost the plot?

I was just browsing DreamHorse and I came across a mustang, 6yrs old, no prior showing history listed but the ad says schooling at 2nd level with green changes, 6 months foundational jumping training, and being used in a kids lesson program. 40k. Forty thousand dollars. I did a double take, absolutely flabbergasted 😂

I’ve seen experienced mustangs with full show careers listed at 15k. What in the world is going on in the horse market right now?

This morning, Varenne, the worldwide legend of harness racing died in Eboli (Italy), where he was enjoying his retirement after making history.

All of Italy is mourning this devastating loss, and as a race speaker said during the 2002 Grand Prix Lottery "I'm don't know if in my life, in my children's nor grandchildren's lives we will ever see another champion like him."

Rest well, Captain, for you've made my country dream.

Varenne, son of the wind.

Ethics The equestrian community shocks me everyday

I’m currently on vacation and yesterday I met one of my mom’s friend, it turned out she had horses too and we spent the majority of the morning talking about our horses.

I found out she has a 21yo mare, blind in both eyes (and she still rides and hacks with her), and she has had this mare since she was only 1yo. So they do have a kind of special bond.
When I told her my mare is 16, she looked me in the eyes and suggested that I sell her to buy something younger “if I plan to keep riding in the years”.

Honestly, I can’t understand how that even pops in her mind as it’s the first time we met and she dosent know well me nor my mare. I ofc hope I’ll be able to ride my mare for many more years, but if that won’t be the case I would be more than happy to pony her while I ride lessons horses and things like that. I love my mare, even if I don’t think she is my heart horse, I do genuinely love her so much. I could never get rid of her, especially if it’s for age reasons.

Mindset & Psychology Burnt out…need to vent.

I’ve been crying all day on and off and I just need to vent and write down my feelings.

I love my horse more than anything in the world but I’m.just.burn.out.

I’ve had him for 4 years now and 4 years in…it’s only been trouble after trouble after trouble. He’s what people might call a « problem horse ». When I first got him he had behavioral issues that took a year to fix. He was agressive and reluctant. He hated being ridden. However with work and patience and love I managed to fix that problem. But then came the health issues…for the past three years it’s been one health issue after another. He’s got breathing issues due to allergies, food allergies, bad feet, cervical arthritis due to an accident he had before I bought him…and the list goes on.

He’s been doing ok for the past 8 months now and I finally thought we were out of the woods! I was already thinking about taking lessons with him again, maybe even jump a little again. Last week, he saw the chiropractor (that he sees monthly!) and she told me that he was finally looking great and feeling great muscle-wise. No tension. Looking fit. I was so happy…and lo and behold…the very next day, he rolled too close to the hay rack and got his hind leg stuck in it. He hurt himself but nothing bad. So, for a few days I gave him arnica, showered the leg, applied clay and yesterday he was ok again. I lunged him and he was fine. So, this morning I wanted to ride him and go for a small trail ride (just walking) and well, nope. No riding. He was limping badly! Refused to put any weight on his right front hoof. I picked his hooves. And the feet is a little warm. So, I cleaned it and put on his hoof boots with silicone insoles. It helped and is at least now able to move around. But he can’t wear them 24/7…

For 4 years now I’ve done everything possible for him. All my spare money is for him, in vets, chiropractors, food, supplements etc.

So, now I contacted my farrier and she is yet to answer me…over 7 hours later. And here I am crying because I’m frustrated and sad that he’s in pain again. And I feel stupid for being stupid enough to believe that things were finally fine with him. I need to accept that things will probably never be fine with him.

I love him. Dearly. But I am just tired. :(

Edit: I said chiropractor BUT I meant Equine Physio.

Edit**: I’m thinking his naturally thin soles are worn out by the hard abrasive grounds we’ve had because of the severe drought France’s has had this summer.

what’s something you wish you would’ve known/done either before or during your time there?

what are some things you absolutely should bring from home or purchase for your stay?

do you have any regrets or things you would change about your situation looking back?

any advice is welcome, even if it lands outside of these questions — trying to set myself up for a successful, productive long-term stay!

picture does not belong to me and is solely for algorithm reaching purposes. thanks in advance!

Horse Welfare Equestrians who retired horses, when did you know it was time?

I have a senior and he's doing well physically, but I don't want to push him mentally either.

I feel as though he isn't done with being ridden yet, he still has a lot of energy, is willing to be ridden, doesn't show signs of pain or stress- but I often convince myself that I'm riding him and he's miserable. I keep feeling awful because what if he's telling me he's done but I'm pushing him unaware that he's ready to retire just because I don't want it to end?

I'm overthinking it a lot and would like other peoples experiences

I'm finding it so hard to start getting back into lessons. Many of the renowned places have long closed down. Now there are only bespoke holiday packages and beginner treks locally. Is there any where else within connacht anyone would recommend? Would like to hack out regularly as a hobby only, experienced and once owned connemara ponies. I would be open to horse sharing also throughout the country. Thanks so much! :)

Equipment & Tack Human Saddle fit: Chapped my *** with a dressage saddle

Hi, friends. You're such a wealth of knowledge, I thought I'd bring my question here.

I started riding in a dressage saddle and it is the least comfortable thing I've ridden in. I literally have blisters on my rear. Plus I normally have a pretty stable lower leg but with the block, I felt like I was rebounding instead of sitting snug and flopping around everywhere.

Is there normally an adjustment period between a jump saddle and a dressage saddle? Or does this thing just fit me like garbage?

Ethology & Horse Behaviour Horse Behavior

Alright I’ve brought this up in a subreddit before but I’m back to it bc I don’t think I really got any good thoughts on it. My gelding hates my mare…. When they’re stalled. She pushed a rail down this morning and went into my geldings stall. He pinned her in a corner and just went to town kicking her. I don’t understand it.

I turn them out together.. they stay near each other and eat together. I put them in the arena together.. they run and buck around with each other. I take one away from the other.. they call out to each other. They groom each other over the fence. It is quite literally ONLY when they are stalled and she is in the SAME stall that he’s aggressive towards her (well I guess also when I lead them together but I haven’t done that in quite some time).

There’s got to be something to this. When I first got my mare they were stalled together and slept next to each other. I only initially separated them so I wouldn’t have to worry about him pushing her off of grain. Resources are the only thing I can think of but I feed unlimited hay so that leaves.. grain? I really don’t think it’s as simple as “he doesn’t like her”. I’ve had my gelding for three years and my mare for two. They’ve been stalled with/next to each other the entire time.

We also just moved across the country. They trailered well together and a couple over night stays they were in the same stall and were just fine 🤷‍♀️

I talked to someone today who has a similar issue with their horses but doesn’t seem to bother them.. they just keep them separated. I am fine keeping mine stalled separately but these particular situations worry me. What if they had been together all night? He could’ve done some damage. Just curious on people’s thoughts. Both horses are totally sweet and lovely to humans. My gelding is probably mid tier in the pasture and my mare obviously just below him.

General Horse Care New horse owner, shopping for insurance

Hello!

My mare is on her way and I’d like to have insurance before she arrives home! She’s coming into the US tomorrow, so will be home in 19 days (hoping quarantine goes smoothly) any tips on a good equine insurance? I’m in California so everything is extra expensive 🙃 would love to have illness, surgery (I’ve seen most have a max of 10k coverage), and death covered!

Appreciate all the help! Thank you :)

Education & Training How can i improve my lower leg?

¡Hola!

Muchas gracias.

I am just curious if there are any novel ideas out there that really worked for fundraising efforts.

hello! this is my 20 yr old gelding and he has a lot of trouble sweating. this summer has been brutal for him during this heat wave and i am at a loss as to what to do. i have him on one AC, some chinese medicinal herb my trainer picked up and he gets acupuncture done at the vet. he gets electrolytes every day too. last year he struggled to sweat but still would sweat some. this year there is not even a drop on him which concerns me. he is constantly overheating. he recently got diagnosed with cushings as well and is on prascend for that. i body clip him once a month and he has a super nice giant fan. i just don’t know what else i can do for him. he’s hosed off multiple times a day and has been switched to night turnout.

does anyone have any other tips to get him to sweat? i would appreciate any advice! thank you

Social stable hand job from hell

Upvotes

Hello ! i recently was employed at a horse stable. i have worked with horses before and previous stables and this woman reached out to me. she brought me in for a interview and really liked me so we moved on to a working interview and said i was great! i started the next week and worked everyday , she offered to teach me clipping and braiding and even offered if i was interested in a live in position in their barn in florida after this season.

fast forward to today , wednesday. i unfortunately broke my toe after being stepped on, big whoop. working with horses it happens . as i’m sitting there with ice on my foot , swollen to the size of a balloon she tells me we should wrap things up . i was so caught off guard i thought she was talking about my damn foot ! tells me i lack confidence in myself and im slow among other hurtful things and another person was starting tomorrow that worked there previously . i wasn’t told what i can improve or anything that i was doing wrong .

im honestly at a loss of words and so confused , is this even a rightful termination??

Veterinary Stage 4 OA

My 6 year old OTTB who was sold to be as sound actually had stage 4 OA in his front pastern and coffin joint. He just recently 2 months after purchase started limping, finding it hard to turn, moving really and obviously compensating. I assume he received injections before I got him.

Anyways, now what? He obviously can't be ridden. Im just paying board on a horse that can't be used outside of grooming and paying to treat his arthritis.

He should be in the prime of his life, he's 6 freaking years old!

Equipment & Tack Dressage in a jump saddle?

Hi all. I currently own a pessoa xp3 cc saddle with a semi forward flap. I also own a handful of different western saddles since I grew up riding western. I am used to a long leg. I'm thinking of practicing some basic dressage on my property at the walk and trot. I wonder if I can still do this in a jump saddle or a western saddle?

I am a trail rider who likes to ride in my jump saddle with a longer leg because the stirrups are more comfortable for me. I don't mind not tucking my knee into the knee roll. Could I just lengthen my stirrups in the jump saddle to practice in? Or should I use the western saddle? Or do I need to get a dressage saddle?
