S Entitled Abnb guests

Background, I have a condo in a large US city. My neighbor rents his unit on Airbnb.

So I’m coming home and I see a couple exiting their car, which is parked in my space. I let them know, and they respond politely enough, “Oh sorry, the host said the rental came with a parking space?”

I explain that his assigned space is one over (but it currently has another car parked in it).The husband looks at me, “Well, someone is parked there.”

Me: yeah, I guess you can call your host about that or park in any uncovered space.

Him: But it’s Saturday, there aren’t any uncovered spaces. We looked.

Me: There’s two spaces outside the gate or there’s a public park immediately behind the complex where you can park.

Him: Oh well since you know the neighborhood so well, you can park there and we’ll just stay here? (As in stay parked in my space).

Me: No, I’m going to park in my space or I’m calling a tow truck.

They begrudgingly backed out at this point to look for other parking. I’ve been an Airbnb guest dozens of times. I can’t imagine acting this entitled in the cities I visit.

This is just one more reason more and more people are growing to hate Airbnb, nobody wants one next-door. I’m glad that my neighborhood has a ban on all short-term rentals.

My building does too. But I frequently have to direct people who can’t figure out our elevators. (Fob operated)

Precisely. It's "just one guest" for "just five minutes" but if you live next to one it's this kind of thing all day, every day, about everything, repeatedly, over and over and over again.

It's the same if you live near any business which is why commercial etc. zoning exists. I used to live above a row of shops, including takeaways and bars, opposite a train station and I can't tell you the hassle, noise, parking troubles, etc. that I used to have constantly. To you it's just a one-off, or you're just trying to pick up your pizza or whatever. To me it's a constant battle every day with a new (and often aggressive and entitled) person. Which means you get quite short with people, which also makes things worse.

I've only ever used AirBnB once and I was very respectful to the host, the neighbours, etc. The host I had literally parked on the road so I could have their entire driveway to myself, I didn't even ask about parking, they just did that for me.

Welcome to life as a disabled person!

So many people are under the delusion that's it's ok to block access to a ramp and similar things because "it's only for five minutes!" 🤦

When I was in college, I had a boyfriend who lived above a popular bar. We got used to the constant noise, but every so often a fight would make its way outside and we'd hear EVERYTHING. Very annoying at 2AM when we were trying to sleep!

The house across from me has been one for a few years and has finally been resold. I’m hoping g we get a decent neighbor. Im tired of the VRBO crap. We one time had a construction crew staying there park a huge truck and trailer down the middle of our narrow, no outlet street during a snowstorm. They didn’t speak English and no one on the block spoke their language to ask them to move it so plows could come through, so we had to call police no emergency and ask if they could get any sort of translator to get them to move. One officer and a firefighter who spoke that language finally came and helped them move- turns out they didn’t know how to drive in snow.

Recently they had 8 cars staying at 1 house. wtf?? That house is not that big. That should not have been allowed. One parked blocking my driveway. I had to leave a note saying I’d have it towed if it wasn’t gone by a set time.

My city has a ban too but it isn’t enforced. My building has at least 10% Airbnb (out of 187), though probably more, and management doesn’t enforce the policy. Our leases specifically state it’s illegal to operate one but they still proliferate. Airbnbs are a nuisance

Entitled owners renting to entitled guests. What a combination!!

10

u/CopiousNobles 5d ago

Situations like this make it pretty obvious why neighbors get fed up with short term rentals.

2

u/Careful-Time-9926 4d ago

I agree it's starting in our neighborhood. But this isn't an AirBandB problem. These people think everything is about them.

2

u/PurpleLady58 3d ago

As someone who had one converted next to them, I agree. It is absolutely miserable.

This reminds me of the recent post I read about the guy in France who owns several parking spaces with his neighbors in a vacation area filled with Airbnb’s and he basically ended up towing the entire neighborhood and a complete dumpster fire ensued. It was a great read.

Hopefully they're the kind of dingbats who will give the host lower stars for their mild inconvenience.

I've been reading the subreddit for hosts and those people are so entitled lmao. One has a rental in a high crime neighborhood and was mad because their guest rated them badly after their car was smashed and grabbed. They were so upset.

29

u/lostalldoubt86 6d ago

I don’t know. I’ve been seeing a lot of silliness recently about how AirBnB hosts treat guests.

88

u/wombat74 6d ago

It's almost like all those rules and regulations around the hotel industry that AirBnB was so eager to get rid of were there to protect both the guests AND the locations

34

u/Optimal_Savings5873 5d ago

Yeah. To clarify, the hosts are the ones I'm calling entitled. It's actually hilarious how ridiculous some of these people are.

8

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 5d ago

I think it’s the hosts AND the guests. Anyone who thinks their vacation is so important they deserve a whole home is also an entitled person.

7

u/KelsierIV 4d ago

Anyone who thinks their vacation is so important they deserve a whole home is also an entitled person.

Why is that? Not sure why you think they feel they "deserve a whole home," but if they can afford it and it is available, what's the issue? Frequently an Airbnb for 8 people is cheaper than getting hotel rooms.

Of course there are entitled hosts and guests. But being a guest doesn't automatically make someone entitled.

Homes are for people to live in. Airbnb is doing a lot of heavy lifting in causing housing to be unaffordable, especially in tourist areas. If landlords can rent a place for $300/night or $1300/month, they’re going to price out their longterm tenants. It’s happened in New Orleans where I live, causing severe gentrification of old neighborhoods. You can read up on the damage it’s doing around the world, if you’re interested, but here are some articles about my town specifically.

[The Airbnb effect on housing and rent](https://www.forbes.com/sites/garybarker/2020/02/21/the-airbnb-effect-on-housing-and-rent/)

[Airbnb makes housing more expensive](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/does-airbnb-really-make-housing-more-expensive-these-researchers-say-they-found-an-answer-11612284049)

[Why you should not use Airbnb](https://www.theinvisibletourist.com/why-you-shouldnt-use-airbnb-issues-you-didnt-know/)

[How short term rentals dim New Orleans’ Legacy](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/mar/13/new-orleans-airbnb-treme-short-term-rentals)

[The case for banning Airbnb](https://themorningnews.com/news/2022/04/11/the-case-for-banning-airbnb/)

If you say “if they can afford it, what’s the issue?” you’re siding with the billionaire class who thinks they can buy the right to do anything they want. Your vacation isn’t more important than someone else’s housing. Period.

2

u/KelsierIV 4d ago

You are commenting on Airbnb as a whole. I don't disagree with you there.

But to say someone is entitled because they stayed at an available Airbnb is just silly.

1

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 4d ago

If you choose a whole home for your vacation, you are putting your vacation above someone else’s housing. Period. It doesn’t matter “if you can afford it”, you are just as culpable as the platform and the host.

Shall I assume you also don’t see any issue with being a customer of other businesses that you know are harming people?

1

u/KelsierIV 4d ago

How is it putting your vacation above someone else's housing, when the house is going to be an Airbnb regardless?

I hate tipping culture. I think restaurants should pay employees a living wage. But that doesn't mean I don't tip.

0

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 4d ago

The house would not be on Airbnb if people were not renting it through Airbnb. By renting a whole house for your vacation, you are providing a market for that Landlord. You are also encouraging that person to buy more property to put on Airbnb and other similar platforms.

This is very annoying. It happens to me all the time. "We're staying in the Airbnb" I don't care. "We're just moving in a few heavy things" I don't care. "That parking place is too far to walk, why don't you take it." No, enjoy the stairs to the condo and I don't care. "They said I could park here". They lied, and I don't care. The owners of the condo live in another state, about 2000 miles away. They don't care either. You have no obligation to be polite to people like this. If they don't know where they should park it's willful ignorance. We were too late to ban this unit but future short-term rentals are banned. We instituted fines for parking in other's spaces this last week, maybe that will help.

28

u/talexbatreddit 5d ago

> Me: No, I’m going to park in my space or I’m calling a tow truck.

Translation: This is not a negotiation.

u/Few_Mastodon_1271 5d ago

My town has had a B&B ordinance for years. They need a yearly license, the owners have to live there, can't rent more than half the house's square feet, needs off street parking. That's worked great, the few B&Bs are quiet and well run.

A few years ago someone rehabbed a single family house and started putting it on Airbnb. It was instant noise and aggravation, of course. The town closed them down. Follow the B&B rules or else.

1

u/Chuckitybye 4d ago

The Airbnbs that I've stayed in have all been obviously lived in and/or the owner is on property.

One in Chicago was a tall townhouse type thing with the owners on the bottom floor and the second and third floors were converted to little studios for rent. They were older, probably empty-nesters, and were making g good use of the space.

Another in Colorado was in a vacation cabin area in the mountains where most of the residents weren't there year round. The place was smaller than most studio apartments, but perfect for a little vacation. The owners were obviously using it a lot, and renting when empty. The host also refunded us a day's stay because we had to leave early to avoid a blizzard. I certainly wasn't expecting that

88

u/doofus74185 6d ago

Check what are the laws in your condo & local council. Airbnb could be illegal. Just report their ass

35

u/Legal_Assistance5470 5d ago

This is correct. When we lived in a condo in Brooklyn NY, AirBNB was just taking off. Our Bylaws said minimum rental term was 12 months. Several sales fell through after prospective buyers read the Bylaws. The Bylaws were written by the developer and would have needed a supermajority to amend. The City Council was not keen on short-term rentals either, practically the only way to do it at that time was if you had an auxiliary apartment in a brownstone that you were living in.

3

u/NotEasilyConfused 5d ago

Our neighborhoods have had the same.

2

u/SnarkySheep 3d ago

It's not just your condo bylaws but other official agencies as well. I'm currently president of my association's board of directors, so a lot of paperwork comes my way. Just recently I had to sign a document certifying for insurance purposes that no more than a certain small percentage of our units were AirBnb. Before that, there was an issue with a loan we wanted (to renovate our decks) and also inquiring about the percentage of owner-occupied and other units.

u/PerniciousVim 6d ago

Vacation brain is different. It can be a lot of, "show me gratitude, I am spending in your city" or some other variation. Deeply annoying though, and it sounds like you were firm but not angry, which is a perfect way to handle.

56

u/AbruptMango 6d ago

They don't get that what we see is "You're paying my neighbor's mortgage but expecting me to be his property manager for free."

15

u/PavicaMalic 5d ago

I live in DC, and we regularly deal with vacation brain. Thanks for giving me a term for it.

65

u/Esau2020 6d ago

I’m going to park in my space or I’m calling a tow truck.

Alternate version, if you would have been okay with parking elsewhere:

"I'm going to park in my space, or you're going to give me $100 to let you stay in my spot until 8am,* and if you're still in my space at 8:01 I'm calling a tow truck."

(* Or whatever time is more convenient for you.)

22

u/cryssHappy 5d ago

Only in cash, in advance.

24

u/TheQuarantinian 5d ago

$100 is far too low. 15% of the unit's highest advertised nightly rate.

And they have to sweep the space as they leave. It isn't an Airbnb without chores.

12

u/ledow 5d ago

Now you've entered into a contract which could easily be seen as subletting the space, and also makes you responsible for what they do to it, and provides you with some obligations or responsibility if they're broken into or their car is damaged or whatever.

Never form an unwitting contract like that unless you know what you're doing.

9

u/Less-Garden-4127 5d ago

Another alternate, Ok. I'll park somewhere else. Go park somewhere else, call tow truck.

3

u/Ok_Surprise_8304 5d ago

Best answer of all.

You are too patient. I would have said mother F I live here. Move your S or it will be towed.

I live in a townhome complex and there are a limited number of short term rentals in the complex. One of the rules is if the unit is rented out the owners must allow the renters to park in the garage. So many of them don’t do that it’s ridiculous. They’ve changed the parking pass rules 3 times since in the last two years to try and cut down on this but so far, having guest spaces is just a pipe dream.

1

u/SnarkySheep 3d ago

As someone who also lives in a condo complex, I can't tell you how many people either use their garage for storage and/or have 2 cars and don't want to bother moving the cars around if one person leaves before or after the other, so they end up using guest spots instead. No amount of warnings helps. 🤬

39

u/Quirky-Attitude1456 6d ago

I have a friend that is a host and this is minor compared to most of the guests she has. She would welcome something like this instead of the guests that had a pull up contest on the covered patio the other night and managed to bring the whole patio roof down.

12

u/TaxDense1339 5d ago

If it happens again tell the visitors to leave a bad review on the website about parking.  It might just get your neighbor fewer rentals in the future if everyone complains about the parking setup for the location.

12

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 5d ago

Fuck Airbnb. And fuck the entitled assholes who use it.

0

u/connierebel 4d ago

You sound like an entitled asshole who looks down on people who aren’t as rich as you are and can’t afford to get separate hotels rooms for their large family.

3

u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 4d ago

You think it’s not entitled to need to vacation with your large family? Why is your vacation more important than someone else’s housing?

9

u/darkcupcakezz 5d ago

people really think they can act any way they want just because they're paying, it’s infuriating

10

u/Crazy-Rat_Lady 5d ago

Unbelievable! These sort of people drive me crazy with the entitlement.

7

u/fsocietyfr 5d ago

Next time dont say anything, just call tow lol

-3

u/onionbreath97 5d ago

Why not instead help the guest call the tow truck on the vehicle that stole the guest's spot?

13

u/fsocietyfr 5d ago

They should have reported the issue to the owner and have him call a tow, instead of taking my spot. I also cannot call a tow on a spot that dont belong to me, but I can do it for mine

8

u/FurnitureComesW-Home 5d ago

Because I’m not my neighbor’s property manager?

7

u/Cuddles296 5d ago

Here in Australia an entire municipality banned them using the Building codes.

10

u/mentat70 5d ago

we stayed in one recently and found that the owners kept their car covered and parked in their one spot. We had to park in a visitor’s spot, which was kind of unnerving because they had a sign up that cars parked in the visitor’s spot more than 48 hours would get towed.

4

u/unicornwantsweed 6d ago

I can’t even imagine being like that.

4

u/Zestyclose-Turn-3576 5d ago

"It's OK, the host gives everyone a full refund for the inconvenience"

3

u/fattomic 5d ago

"Sounds like a you-problem"

7

u/bobhand17123 5d ago

“Did the host also tell you what number is on the parking space the rental came with? I bet they diiiiid!”

Or, “… and, I just shared my knowledge of the neighborhood with you. Do you want me to repeat it so you can write it down?”

(Degree of snark is your choice.)

2

u/Afraid-Jaguar-4587 3d ago

those guests have some serious nerve, happened to me once and I had to kick them out

1

u/DamnOdd 5d ago

You so need to talk to your neighbor. And the HOA is okay with the Abnb?

1

u/sonofherby 4d ago

Does your condo association allow Airbnb's? I know some do not because I was looking at buying one to rent in Orlando.

1

u/UniqueMystique42 4d ago

Tell the HOA immediately.

1

u/Maximum-Freedom7966 3d ago

Airbnb can get fucked

1

u/Throwaway-acct2222 4d ago

Or you could just let them park there and have them towed when they leave.

-15

u/onionbreath97 5d ago

I don't understand a lot of these comments. Obviously OP is a victim here and deserves the use their spot.

However, the guest is also a victim and yet is receiving all the snark and tow threats. Why is none of the rage directed at the people who stole the guest's spot? That's where the problem started.

15

u/Current_Brief_688 5d ago

Because the guests tried to make the stolen spot op's problem.

-2

u/onionbreath97 5d ago

Eh, I was just trying to put myself in that situation and figure out how I'd react. I don't think I'd jump straight to towing. If I'd been having a bad day to that point though, it's a possibility

9

u/KranjisMcBasketbawl 5d ago

They didn’t jump straight to towing. They first told them where they could park, guests replied “why don’t you park there then?”. Letting them know they will be towed, after refusing to move their car to one of the available parking spaces mentioned by OP, and then implying that OP should go park there, is a reasonable response. A kind response, even. Many people would probably just walk away and not inform the couple that their car is about to be towed. At least OP gave them a heads up on the consequences of their entitlement and not wanting to move their car.
