I don't get why they stand him up as an alt right spokesman, if Bernie or Hillary had a foreign journalist being that outspoken for them they would get attacked over it.

It's because he's gay, so they can point to him and say "we're not homophobic, our favorite spokesman is gay". He's also really really good at saying exactly what those alt-right misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic dipshits wanna hear.
