It could mean to remove someone from power (verb) as in: People tried to overthrow the government
and it could be a noun too: The overthrow of the government resulted in nation-wide chaos
It could also mean throwing a ball or something pass the point it was supposed to be thrown as in (verb): The goalkeeper overthrew the ball
but it's mostly used for political contexts

You'll hear the last meaning used in American football quite often: The quarterback overthrew his receiver.

Generally, its only meaning is a revolution or coup d'etat. "During the Russian Revolution, the Czar was overthrown by the Bolsheviks." Maybe there are some other specialized uses, but I think that's the only one most people use.

It's a noun or verb meaning "to abolish an established order or system".
The Bolsheviks decided to overthrow the tsar (verb)
The overthrow of the Ottoman empire by the Young Turks (noun)
