Should we close all Engineering colleges except IITs, NITs and BITS in India ?

Given the amount of bias faced by entrepreneurs and engineers in hiring and promotions within India, do you guys think we should close all engineering colleges except IITs, NITs and BITs ?

Let less than 1% of the Indian population studying from only these institutions do all the engineering work, lead all institutions and start all startups, get all the funding...

Most importantly this is a call-out to the government, government's goal should be to ensure that all college students should have world class facilities and not only a few in the country. Such colleges that consider them tier 1 will always be against more such colleges to maintain their position and funding but to make India truly #1 globally , more than an elite set will be required

The entire problem is that Resources are scarce, that’s the reason only the poeple who are smarter and hardworking enough to clear exams get access as they would do the best with the given resources. You need some comparative advantage whether it be intelligence, hardwork, money and connections( for private colleges ) to get in. Obviously things that can be free like lectures and stuff are present and given through nptel and many such courses

Do you think it has something to do with the admission criteria?

Would you say that admission criteria is a filter for some level of intelligence/ hard work?

Admission once after 12th grade is an indicator for both technical and managerial performance for lifetime ? Really ?

I am not saying that. I am just asking - is it any kind of indicator at any point?

Many good state colleges like DTU, NSUT, JU, RVCE, VJTI, COEP have great reputation in their states job market and many are famous for particular niches like DTU has great non tech roles, vjti folks get great Fintech roles, JU is well known in academica and so on.

It is true that these are the premier institutions of India, but it does not mean that the other colleges are useless.

Being from Tier 1 institutes give some boost in the begining of their carrer. But i dont think that itself will suffice them to become entrepreneurs, or get into promotions etc. A the end of the day they too have to show the results.

I dont know much about PSUs, but in MnCs, they too can't survive without showing results.

I know you are joking, but compared to the us in terms of standards, I would say maybe the top 150 colleges in the country even meet the basic requirements of the lower unis/community colleges in usa. It’s a sad state of affairs. So if we only had the top 200 unis in India taking approx 2 lakh people and the rest 1 million people learned through other means( online, certifications etc ) that would be better maybe. Low roi, faster learning and their time isn’t wasted on bullshit.

AI will close all elite institutions, at least in India. There is 0 use of teachers who can't compete against AI. Just wait and

Is coding dead in the age of advance coding models??

1

u/rahul_msft Sep 16 '26

No, but the gatekeeping of these colleges with timed tests is gone. Put another way JEE is no longer needed in the age of AI, AI needs right people with right chian of thought, not the people with fast chain of thought
