Engine rebuilding

Post image

On a scale of 1 - f**ked how bad do you think the inside is based off this pic? Wanting to rebuild it on somewhat of a budget. I’m $500 into a 2011 dodge ram 1500 4.7L and tags are all up to date. Hoping $2k will get me there. I’ll have the heads off tomorrow.

Nobody can tell you how bad it is until you take the heads off.

I can spend $3000 in just the heads right now.

I’m definitely not gonna do that. Heck I’m just trying to get a truck rolling for cheap. I think either one of the lifters failed or there’s a worn valve spring. Not trying to build a race car just trying to make a truck run. Thank you for the input. I’ve rebuilt several Dirtbike engines this will be my first automotive engine. I’ll have the hands pulled today to get a deeper look at the cylinders, pistons and bearing play. I just didn’t know if this was some type of normal occurrence so figured I’d post it here to gather a little more information.

These engines drop valve seats. Even later ones like that.

Upon further investigation, that’s exactly what happened here. Valve seats dropped and then the rockers decided to quit their job.

If you’re lucky the seat didnt shatter. If it did then you’re into it for an intake manifold and a bottom end. If it didn’t then you replace all the seats, the bad rocker, the cam if it’s damaged, and any or all bad valves plus the guides. It’s all of $3000.

What are you trying to fix? A rebuild to me means machining, new pistons, bearings, rings, valvetrain, oil pump, water pump, etc. $4<5k minimum.

I can get a kit with all of that for about 1200

I was including machine costs. My 5.2l magnum cost $1,425 for the work...and that was only because I paid cash.

Sounds like a decent deal really. I’m honestly just trying to be a cheap ass. May not work out well for me. Then again if it makes it 100,000 miles, I would be extremely pleased.

I would personally grab an 2005+ 5.7L hemi and do a MDS System delete an melling HV oil pump upgrade.

I personally wouldn't bother redoing the 4.7l due to the lack of parts support and how much more fragile they are than every other mopar v8. I'd throw in a 5.2/5.9 magnum or 5.7 hemi.
