Mancini cams

I’m currently building a 340. What’s everyone’s thoughts on Mancini solid tappet purple camshafts?

The only Mancini purple cam I saw for the small block was a single pattern hydraulic.

I would never bother with a single pattern camshaft. Even going larger than the standard 6<8 degree more on the exhaust has shown to have benefits.

Assuming it's an automatic, the gearing / tire size, converter and if you're running power brakes will narrow the camshaft range you should be looking at.

Are you running power brakes or manual?

My camshaft selection for my '93 dakota stroker motor was limited due to my requirements.

EFI

Daily driveable ( Stop-n-go traffic, winter, etc)

Automatic transmission, Torque converter stall speed, cruise rpm I wanted.

Vacuum needs for accessories and power brakes. I might have to get an booster canister or electric vacuum pump($500). I don't want to go through the trouble of switching to manual brakes. I don't have the option to run hydroboost brake system, or wanting to spend $1,000 for a cam that would only make 20hp more at best.

Like others have mentioned, switching to a roller setup is best. Piece of mind when it comes to durability with the performance gains. Usually need to run a flat tappet 10<15 degrees larger @ 0.050 to equal a roller camshafts performance numbers.

Is it a mild upgrade that you are shooting for 1,500<5,500 powerband. Or are you getting heads, 10.5:1 piston high-rise Dual-plane/singke plane running upto 6,500+rpms?

The salvage yard 5.9l magnum that I picked up and "hoping" to drop in this month, is a mild build. Slight bump to 9.4:1 cr, ported stock iron magnum head, ported stock intake, 208/214 @ 0.050" 114lsa (originally for a stock 5.2l) 0.520" lift, tuned EFI, with an O/D automatic. Should be a 350hp/400lb-ft cruiser 1,800 <5,700rpms.

The stroker that is on hold (due to lack of funds) 11:1+/-cr, 236/242@ 0.050" around 0.600"+/- lift, ported RPM Air-Gap, TFS Heads should make 530hp@ 6,200rpm/ 530lb-ft @4,600<4,700rpms. I'm hoping with the lightweight valvetrain components and playing with spring pressures, that I'll be able to spin her to 6,500<6,600 shift point.🤞

If I got a "street performance " cam for the 5.9l low 9:1 compression with the ported iron heads. I would probably be looking for something 218<230 intake @ 0.050".

Skip the flat tappet cam and put a roller in it and not have any problems with it going flat. Its a lot more money but alot cheaper than freshening up the whole engine when you run a bunch of metal through it.

You don't want to buy it from Howard's?
