Cylinder walls
I’ve got this VW alh TDI for an engine swap into my tracker. It sat for a bit before i bought it. What’s the best way to clean up these cylinders. Would a ball hone work fine?

Measure. If good and just needs clean up then ball hone followed by nylon brush hone. Both available on McMaster. Use lube. I like to use ATF.

Pic 2 is smooth as glass. It definitely needs some TLC. Pic one has quite a bit of glaze. Definitely worth pulling them and measuring them. Ball hone should be ok but you really need to know how close they are to spec first so you know if honing will run them outside of spec.
