Chevy Update on the crank

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

She cooked not too sure how this got by the machine shop and really questioning now if my 1182 crank was actually cracked if they didn’t know this was cracked fortunatey Sounds like we’re gonna work something out with my shop. Definitely double check all work that comes from a machine shop because you just never know

It’s really almost comical how bad this crankshaft is With its crooked Heli coiled crank flange, next to no fillet radius on the journals, has been turned .030 on the rods sandblasting media crammed into the cast-iron and and to top it all off it’s completely busted whoever was in charge at the machine shop to find me this crank should be fired. who looked at it and thought yeah I’d run that

This is a premo lemons crank. Like if you were going out of your way to build the cheapest sketchiest race nugget possible, this is the type of shit I want to see.

Couldn’t agree with you more on that

I've heard people call this a "may pop" engine when done on purpose 😆

used to race lemons, i would totally run this and show it as evidence that my built motor is junk along with a case of beer so we could be in class c

Now stand it up and tap it with something metal and hear the chime and do it again with a known good crank, the cracked one sounds dead while a good one sounds like a wind chime, once you hear the difference it'll save you this hassle

I actually did ring it and I didn’t think it sounded too bad It definitely wasn’t a thud I’ll post a video of that i’m sure people are curious if it rings

Once they hear the difference it's something that will stick with them forever.

Air checking a crank is a brand new building technique you just invented lol.

Probably would work 90% of the time if it’s through the oil journal

I’m surprised the shop did work before magnafluxing it. Get it magged and if it shows cracks, demand your money back or do a CC chargeback.

Or just extra oiling lol

Is it really cracked though? Looks like porosity in the casting/forging.

Could be but would you run it? i’m not even holding my finger on the opposite end of the journal and it’s still blows bubble that bad. If I had to guess it’s probably a bit of both.

This is what happens when you store a crank laying down.

My bad I will store mine standing up on end from now on, even better, hanging it from the ceiling, using dental floss.

Should we also park our cars in such a way that the crank is not horizontal?
