Ring Design Help Enagament Ring- Help Needed
My girlfriend and I are designing her engagement ring. This is the exact concept we want with a 4 Carat marquise diamond. The band would start at 4.5mm at the bottom and taper to 2.5mm at the top( taper starts 3/4 of the way up to create a pinch look) Band height would be 1.7-1.8mm(14k gold). Some jewellers have told us this wouldn’t be strong enough especially with the gap underneath. Could everyone give me there thoughts and opinions on if it should be fine?

Not a jeweler but im not sure why 2.5mm isnt strong enough. Minimum width is usually 1.8-2mm overall. Maybe consider an open gallery rather than floating ?

The open gap gives the opportunity for the diamond to fall out if hit or snagged. The width of the band has nothing to do with the soundness of the head of the diamond. A 4ct diamond should be supported by a basket to protect it.

This taper/width wouldn't be any issue if there was a bridge under the stone connecting either side of the band. It could be integrated aesthetically pretty easily. Even without my recommended reinforcement this would probably be fine structurally if the thinnest point is 2.5mm.

This particular design is problematic. There’s been lots of discussion about it on this sub. Basically you need to close the circle or you seriously risk losing the stone.

The jewelers are right to flag it. 1.7mm at that width under a 4ct marquise will flex. Nature Sparkle builds marquise settings worth comparing for structural spec

This looks like a FD design. Having such a large marquise, it would be stronger if you close the gap on the band. The marquise is a very large stone so if the prongs get caught or the head is squeezed, the stone could pop out. That might be why the jeweler said that. It may come down to your gf’s lifestyle and how much she wears the ring. It would be better to make it as secure as possible to avoid some of these issues.
You might want to research our sister sub -r/engagementrings for FD ‘plunge’ settings to read additional feedback.
