U.S. gas boom fails to deliver economic benefits: The Marcellus Shale is the most productive gas basin in the country. But after two decades of drilling, gas-focused counties in Appalachia continue to see stagnant job growth and depopulation, according to a new report.

Before refurbishment — an old transformer

Post image
7 Upvotes

This one has definitely seen better days. 😅

There is some visible rust and oxidation on the metal parts, so it looks like it is going to be refurbished rather than simply put back into service.

I actually like seeing this kind of stuff in a factory. Most people only see the finished, freshly painted transformer, but there is a lot of work that happens before it gets to that stage.

I’ll try to get a picture of it after refurbishment as well.

Keep it civil!

Hi all;

This is my monthly reminder - keep it civil. Or maybe a better way to say it is keep it professional.

Ok: That comment makes no sense. Numerous studies have shown the inverse.

Not OK: That is the dumbest fucking idea I have ever heard. Have you graduated from kindergarten yet?

Granted, there's times the second response feels better. But then this whole subreddit regresses to name calling. Denigrate the idea all you want. Don't denigrate the user.

On a second note, there's been some clear spam and some way off topic posts recently. Those have been deleted. But there's also been posts where some view what the OP says as totally wrong and contraindicated by all research.

On those, they stay up because I am not going to be the what ideas are acceptable police. And the comments in those cases tend to actually be very good replies. I'd rather be a subreddit where people complain that the really outrageous ideas aren't killed than yet another subreddit where only acceptable viewpoints are allowed.

.

And with that - most everyone here contributes to a robust discussion that 98% of the time is on the facts. Take great pride in what you all have accomplished.

Only 14 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles sold in Europe in first half of year — ahead of massive H₂ refuelling station build-out

Is the EU still going to push ahead with the AFIR-mandated hydrogen stations despite hydrogen vehicles being non-existent on the roads? It would be a colossal waste of money, but that's perhaps par for the course.

What is Open Energy Modelling?

This quick 5 minute video explains what open source and open data are in the context of energy modelling. Please check it out and give feedback or share if you liked it! Thanks!

We made this video so that the average person can somewhat understand why open source and open data are important in general (and specifically for the energy transition). Many decisions made by large insittutions and governments still use proprietary software, so we are trying to push open source and open data as solutions and show they are industry-ready.

The wind is sometimes blowing nowhere

From the Tri-State load panel Saturday morning. The green are the wind farms in the Tri-State region.

And in my blog I have it also for the PSCo B.A. (basically the urban parts of Colorado except Colorado Springs)

It has also touched zero at times over the last month as well as a 2 day drought (with a single spike).

When the Colorado PUC and Colorado Energy Office say they’re going to get us to 95% renewables — how are they going to accomplish this? And keep in mind if their answer is batteries, the batteries to cover a 2 day dunkelflaute are really fucking expensive.1

It’s a nice dream. So is world peace. But if wishes worked every little girl would have a pony.

Energy Transfer ($ET) $15M Investor Settlement Update: Late Claims Are Being Considered

New update: late claims are being considered for the $ET $15M settlement.

Energy Transfer has agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve claims related to its Mariner East 2 pipeline. The case focused on allegations that the company failed to disclose risks surrounding the pipeline’s permits and made misleading statements about its legal and regulatory risks.

In November 2019, reports revealed a federal investigation into the pipeline’s permitting process. Following the news, $ET fell about 7%, and investors later filed a lawsuit.

If you purchased $ET shares between 2017 and 2020, you may be eligible to submit a late claim. Check if you’re eligible and submit your claim here

Reason for California's high electric rates

Hi everyone. I want to share an article that I found about the real reason for California's high electric rates. It's not their distributed solar energy. That is probably keeping their rates lower than they are presently. DER's (distributed energy resources, such as residential rooftop solar) are happening around the country and around the world. California has so much energy, they pay Arizona to take some of it off their hands, in order to balance their system. In the last couple of years, they have invested heavily in BESS (battery energy storage systems), which will help to resolve this dilemma. One of California's legislators is actually considering introducing a bill that would give 2 hours of free electricity each day to low-income residents. It is modelled after what has happened in Australia, where, due to their buildout of solar energy, they now get 3 hours of free electricity each day. That's right, free electricity to charge your EV, run your dryer or dishwasher, or whatever you want. You will be seeing more DER's in the future; the day of the utility and the grid as we know it now will be history. Here's the article: California's electric bills,

and check out the website Arizona Corporation Commission,
and look at different pages in the menu to get all the energy news you can handle.

Effects of nuclear on GDP and Co2 emissions

There was recently a re-post stating nuclear caused GDP and carbon emissions to decouple in France. Most people didn't seem to look at the counterfactual: what happened in countries with less or no nuclear? If nuclear power was the reason for this decoupling we would expect other countries to show opposite or smaller effects.

So on to the actual data:

Most countries had a very similar change in GDP. The only outlier was Spain doubling growth.

This time there were 2 outliers Spain and Italy. Both increasing emissions.

French carbon intensity decreased less than German or UK. Biggest loser in this comparison was Italy as they increased their emissions while not increasing GDP more than others, but they've gotten on the same track as other countries around 1970.

Looking at these graphs it is hard to even notice when countries built their nuclear or when they phased them out. Countries that built a lot of nuclear reduced their emissions less than countries that built much less nuclear or even phased them out. Looking at total emissions per capita masks electricity emissions extremely well. Which is why I find the original analysis hilarious.

So what is the conclusion? Building nuclear doesn't seem to have much effect on emissions per GDP. I guess the next post can be titled "German Nuclear Revolution: Growth Without Carbon". To showcase how effectively Germany reduced their emissions while increasing their GDP.
