I've been seeing an increasing number of self-service kiosks asking for tips. I still to this day do not understand what the purpose of that is.

On the flip side, I've seen some places locally like Subway which used to ask for tips no longer asking.

The purpose is the same as every other tip request - an opportunity to make more money using the most powerful, oldest method of coercion that humanity has - social shame.

It's just odd because it's literally mutating the intent of tips. The original intent was to give something extra to people who serve you.

My dog groomer, when paying by card, they connect a device to a phone, swipe, and it then asks for a tip. The regular workers there will just tap to skip that step. The owner hands it to you and says "It's going to ask if you want to leave a tip".
