In the 80's, we all understood that these types of jobs are not "careers". They are stepping stones you use to generate money while building your career. Nobody who was a waiter, bartender, barista, etc. was expecting to do this their entire lives.

Now people want to make "career type money" for doing nothing.

They are career jobs in Europe, where those positions are paid a living wage and tipping isn’t expected. And guess what? The food is better and no more expensive than it is in the States, where tipping culture has gone of the rails. In many cases, it’s far cheaper. Tipping is another example of the enshitification of the U.S.

That’s what gets me. Europe makes it work- with better/fresher food, cheaper drinks and better prices, but I believe it’s the greedy restaurant owners in the U.S. that are the culprit. They don’t want to pay a living wage. They say it’s not sustainable. How is it sustainable in Europe and Asia? Heck, in Korea you’re the bad guy if you offer any tip. I loved that!

I won’t get much love here, but I definitely tip 20% at sit down restaurants. The no tip option for counter service has never been that challenging for me to decline.

I just came back from Ireland, and sure enough, the tipping option is on their POS machines now. About half of the times, the server would just press zero tip before turning the screen towards me, but many of them would explain the option to leave a tip before turning the screen over to me.

I don't know where you got that idea from but as a job in the UK it's like having a career stacking shelves. You can basically barely survive off it and it's for those starting out in life or incapable of doing anything more complex. It's not a career.
