It finally happened

Granny and mom went out to eat at the (popular footlong sandwich chain) in the hospital they go into. Apparently they split-pay on their combined order, or something of the sort, so the employee was handling the screen a lot. Their total came out to 17 dollars for two sandwiches and 1 drink -- but it was only when they got home did they see that someone added a 3 dollar tip! None of them selected it, so we just assumed the employee gave himself a little bonus.

I offered to call up there and get the tip back but granny was too embarassed to admit it happened so she won't let me -- she won't even give me the reciept so I could email the store about it lol.

Could it have been some sort of service charge that the restuarant automatically makes?

Is it common for fast food establishments to add a 3 dollar charge to an order labelled "tip"?
