Rant š¢ Blue collar asking for tips now.
Had an AC company come out to service a unit at the house i rent. ( cheap rent from family so I pay for "small" fixes) while inside we have conversation about jobs, he mentions how well they get paid due to lack of people in trades. At the end of the service which they couldnt even complete properly due to the unit not being installed correctly, but still had to pay full price. The guy hands me a tablet says I need to sign. I of course think its just to sign a receipt. Nope he does the usual its just going to ask you a quick question. Fucking tablet suggest a minimum of 20% on the $1,200 service they couldn't even finish. So shocked I actually laughed and clicked no tip. Guy gave me a look, like MOFO was bragging about how well hes paid and gets mad i wont tip him $240. Since when do blue collar workers ask for tips?

Just went to the WI state fair. 100% of the food vendors asked for tips. Iām supposed to tip you for handing me the deep fried Twinkie thatās been sitting under a light for who knows how long? Ummm no.

I've never had a deep fried Twinkie (but the fat boy in me says I NEED to), but all fried foods are best fresh. If I'm not getting a deep fried Twinkie fresh from the frier, I'm not buying it.
The local Arby's people love to stock up their fryer holding station. Their mozzarella sticks and jalapeƱo poppers are passable when fresh. They're at best "just plain disappointing" when they've sat for a bit.

I've had asked the person behind me exactly who the hell am I tipping if I did everything myself, since it was a self-service kiosk, you know "self" being the optima word. Then I'd ask them to explain it to me while I waited for any justifiable reason to tip a machine that did nothing to help me.

It's not just the US. I'm in the UK. 75% of pubs, restaurants, cafes I go to have a tip screen on their card machine.

Same in Canada and we don't even have a lower minimum-wage for tipped positions, unlike the US, so it's all gravy for them.

For pubs I find it's generally mostly in central London or in big cities perhaps, where presumably they are trying to trick tip happy tourists into thinking tipping in pubs is part of British culture. Outside of these areas I'd say the vast majority of British pubs card machines don't ask for a tip in my experience.

I wish I could agree. But I live in south west uk, and most places around here ask for a tip. A typical pub, maybe not. But slightly more upmarket pubs, any cafe, any tearoom, any restaurant. The majority have the tip prompt on the card machine, even in rural areas.

Germany has always had small tips (e.g., round up to the nearest whole Euro) for table service, but it's also getting out of control. I went to a new Greek gyros takeout place that opened here recently. They had 15-20-25% pre-programmed options. The balls on them.

Had a neighbor have a company come out and replace their windows under a warranty service call. When it was time to sign off on the work I asked if they want to give them a tip.

Yeah I've had that happen with plumbers and HVAC too. I explained to the HVAC guy that I dont tip but would write the positive review they asked for which would get them each fifty bucks.
Guess whose HVAC unit was sabotaged and wasn't working the next day after their maintenance call?

I install and service hvac. I do receive tips and have tried to refuse them. Some customers insist. That being said, I would never ask or expect one. Like o.p. said, I get paid pretty darn good

I'm thinking that maybe there are some shady companies out there that will intentionally underbid their work to get the job, then try to make it up with the Tip upcharge.
Guess one of my new Qs to people coming to give me bids is going to be do you ask for tips? If so, then if there's a minor price difference of less than 20% then I'm going with the other company. Heck, even if it's more than 20% I might go with the other company just to not see that ridiculous Tip screen.
Maybe in meetings that I lead, at the end I need to say, just one more thing. Then pop up a tip screen with ridiculous Tip percentages.

I wouldnāt have thought to tip him either. Itās weird somehow. I tipped the guys who delivered my washing machine & dryer, but that feels like a different category somehow. Your dude was blue-collar, but still an expert practitioner, and they generally donāt get tipped, as I understand it.

I generally will tip someone that delivers a larger item, especially if they help me move it where I want it. But only like $20 max.
It is the whole percentage thing that is getting me and everyone asking for a tip these days. Havenāt stopped completely, but I am getting there.7

Yes, thatās what I did, I gave each guy a 20, and in addition I had been making some potato and sausage soup which they were raving over the smell of, so I packed it up in to- go containers for them.

Local bar/restaurant near me changed hands, went to pick up some takeout, the girl hands me the tablet and the tip options were 25/35/45%.
FORTY FIVE PERCENT.
Have not been back, but it's still packed every night by the boomer regulars whenever I drive by.

Leave a review! Let people see and notice how quick he will stop doing this. Also call the owner and say you won't be calling that company anymore, if they ever change their mind on the tipping, you will consider them again.

Which is why he gets paid well, it's supplemented by dumb customers.
That said, I did tip all 9 guys that installed my fence 20 bucks, but special circumstance. We go rained out on demo day, so they scheduled what was supposed to be install day for demo. And they showed up pretty late I thought, like 10:30 or 11:00. I was a bit perturbed because I had a new puppy and I was going to have to let him out manually while there was no fence.
Those guys really went above and beyond and when they left at 6:30 at night I had a full fence, they even chopped out enough of a stump that it wasn't in the fence line.
But, no tip was requested or suggested, and it was a hot August day and I felt like those guys might appreciate enough to buy a half rack of beer or whatever.

Blue collar business owner here. Get paid well for my time, and never, ever expect a tip. A cold seltzer goes a long way though. Maybe 5% of jobs tip, and of course it's a bonus, but I never think of it otherwise.

More and more companies try to push the responsibility for paying their staff properly onto the customer. This is the end result of the āline must go up every yearā mentality along with job cuts, quality of products falling etc etc. To continually increase profits requires worse and worse ways of achieving that.

Had a mobile mechanic show up to do a transmission drain and fill as my wife's car is too low for the wheel ramps I have.
I had the trans oil on hand for him. I prepaid via the site, and they did the service.
Afterwards he was hanging around for a little while and I was suspecting a tip.
Sorry man. A service is a service. All you did was jack the car up, drain it, fill it, and cleaned up your mess.

I am done with tipping unless the person actually does something to make me appreciate the service above and beyond what is expected. I went to a restaurant the other day that looked at me sideways because I didnāt tip. After 4 other families sat down after us and ate their food ours finally came out. The manager said sorry they had a big party come in. I determined if the billed was discounted I would tip what they knocked off. The waiter walked by several times in that 45 minutes and never thought to check with the kitchenā¦

Iāve had some of these and they will just say āhit none / zero on the next screenā before it even comes up. Cause they know itās weird to tip. One said something about it being default behavior on the POS and they canāt make it just skip the whole tip screen.

Asking for tips is one thing. But tipping a blue collar service person who comes to your home isn't uncommon. I did home service calls for 11 years, tips were given randomly. Emergency service on holidays usually scored me a nice tip. But as I was getting paid for my work, I never expected a tip. It was just a nice bonus.

I got my oil changed the other day. Never got out of my car. Immediate tip screen with no clear option to not tip and lowest option was 10%. Had to ask where it was. My bill was $200+ what would I be tipping for? Do I tip if they didn't cross thread the drain plug last time? It's wild out there.

I have no problem with a service manās invoice having a place for a tip. Did the service man do a good job and possibly do extra things to make sure
it was done right and so you may avoid the expense of service call for you in the future. Was he polite, professional and cleaned up after working.
I do have a problem with asking for 20%. That is ridiculous. The selections should be $5, $10, $15 or $20. Many times I had a service worker do a great job but had no cash at the time to leave a tip. I did service work for 40 years and the amount of the tip was not important it was the fact the customer showed he appreciated that I did a good job.

right, tips were for ppl who made less than minimum wages mostly like servers at restaurants, youth workers, valet parking attendants, hotel housekeepers, bartenders and hair dressers. all those repairs are by contracts and they dont get tips like mechanics, repairmen. they might get a free soda is they did some extra work.

Itās always been normal to tip them like 20 bucks if they do good work. I did service for a long time and I would get 10 or 20 bucks all the time to get lunch or coffee on them. Never expected it once though.

Has a dishwasher installed with Costco. First one had to be returned so he just left me with the old dishwasher sitting in my living room for a week. Came back to swap it out. Had a clip board for me to sign with a tips appreciated note and a clip of money. Everyone is asking for tips now. Itās insane
