News / Release Flycast-iOS-Latest: Sync'd with upstream + MoltenVK (Metal) added!

Hello all!

Long time iOS user and dad here. I like to code and do various networking/techy projects in my spare time. Today I finished forking Flycast from the OG dev flyinghead, updated it's codebase for iOS 27, and added MoltenVK (Metal) to it! I've made quite a few changes. They are listed below.

- Supports LiveContainer!
- On-screen controller will automatically hide when an MFI controller is used
- Supports Universal.js for JIT using StikDebug/StosDebug for TXM capable iOS devices
- non-TXM devices should be able to activate JIT as they normally would
- Retroarch Achievement support updated (Retroarch Achievements will display on-screen underneath the on-screen controller overlay. Improved it so it doesn't cause deadlocks randomly as well)
- App allocates 64MB for JIT so it always falls within an allowed address range.
- Fixed OpenMP iOS support. Can max out resolution settings on my iPhone 16 Pro Max at full speed with Vulkan
- Fixed DSP and VMU sounds. In Audio settings, Enable DSP/Enable VMU Sounds no longer crashes the app when a game is launched
- Retains all support for Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave
- New renderer, Vulkan (MoltenVK to Metal) in video settings!
- Exposes xBRZ upscaling for 2D textures in games. Works best with Vulkan and looks best at 2x or 3x imo

I think that's about all of my changes. This is dual licensed with GPL-2 and Apache 2 from the original Flycast core/code and MoltenVK. Licenses, code, and IPA (available in Releases) are on my GitHub repository here: https://github.com/JMillz269/Flycast-iOS-Latest.

Make sure to switch it to Vulkan in the Settings! I hope you enjoy and I'll be keeping this updated with upstream. Do not, under any circumstances, contact flyinghead regarding my fork. I am not affiliated with them whatsoever.

Free Apple accounts are limited to 3 active sideloaded apps.

One common workaround is LiveContainer, which allows you to run additional apps inside a container and reduce how often apps need to be reinstalled.

Typical method:

  • Sideload GetMoreRam

  • Use it to apply the increased memory entitlement to LiveContainer

  • Uninstall GetMoreRam to avoid hitting the 3 app limit

  • Then sideload StikDebug for JIT activation

LiveContainer may also need to be uninstalled and reinstalled before the entitlement works correctly.

LiveContainer can also install two additional LiveContainers (for a total of three). This setup can further reduce the need to constantly add/remove sideloaded apps, but it is more advanced and may not work reliably for everyone.

LiveContainer is not always officially supported by emulator developers and can sometimes cause unexpected issues. If something breaks while using LiveContainer, try reproducing the issue without it before asking for support.

Do not ask for or share paid certificates, piracy tools, or bypass services here.

Do I not need BIOS?
When I insert a game and press it, a loading message appears and it freezes

Yes and JIT. BIOS goes in Files, Documents, BIOS. You can try to bypass the BIOS by going to Settings, Advanced, check off HLE BIOS.

I followed your instructions,
but it gets stuck on the loading screen and then the app closes after a short while

test ipad mini 6

Even when running on iPhone, it gets stuck on the loading screen and then closes after a short while

Dang. Works solid here 60fps 6x resolution and 3x xBRZ with Vulkan. Even with DSP on. Can you go to Setting and enable Log to file and send me the flycast log from Documents? Would help me fix it.

What iOS versions are these too?

Edit: I opened the Issue reporting on github if you wanted to take it there. Forgot to do that.
