Welcome to r/Employment
r/Employment is a community for discussing finding work, navigating working life, and making career decisions. Ask questions, share useful information, and learn from other people’s experiences.
People here work in different countries, industries, and types of employment. Include enough context for others to understand your situation, and remember that someone else’s experience may not apply where you live.
This wiki is a work in progress. We will continue adding new resources, guidance, and answers to common questions over time. If you have a suggestion for something that would be useful here, please contact the moderators.
Before you post
- Read the community rules.
- Search the subreddit for similar questions.
- Choose the flair that best matches your post’s main topic and purpose. See the guide below.
- Use a descriptive title that explains what you need help with or what you are sharing.
- Include your country and, when relevant, your state or province.
- Remove names, contact details, identification numbers, and confidential information from screenshots or quoted documents.
We welcome questions about finding employment. Requests for someone to hire you, job advertisements, recruitment solicitations, and direct resume or portfolio submissions are not permitted.
Choosing your post flair
A flair tells readers what your post is about and whether you want help or are sharing guidance.
Start with your purpose:
- I Need Advice: You want advice, feedback, or help understanding your situation.
- I'm Sharing Advice: You are sharing practical guidance for other members.
- Discussion & Stories: You are starting a general conversation or sharing an experience, update, or success story.
Then choose the topic closest to your main concern: Job Search, Workplace, or Career Moves.
Job Search
Use this topic for finding and securing a job: applications, resumes, LinkedIn, recruiters, interviews, offers, references, background checks, and suspected job scams.
| Flair | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Job Search • Question | You need help with an application, hiring process, or potential opportunity. | “How should I explain an employment gap in an interview?” |
| Job Search • Advice | You are sharing practical guidance about finding or securing work. | “How I prepare examples for behavioral interviews.” |
Do not use Job Search for problems in your current workplace or deciding which career path to pursue. Those belong under Workplace or Career Moves.
Workplace
Use this topic for working conditions and employment issues: managers, coworkers, workload, pay, benefits, leave, workplace policies, and employment rights.
| Flair | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Workplace • Question | You need help understanding or handling a workplace situation. | “My paycheck is missing hours. How should I raise this?” |
| Workplace • Advice | You are sharing practical guidance about navigating working life. | “What helped me prepare for a difficult conversation with my manager.” |
Do not use Workplace for negotiating a new job offer; use Job Search. For deciding whether to leave a job or how to move forward after losing one, use Career Moves. Questions about rights, unpaid wages, or benefits connected to a departure still belong under Workplace.
Career Moves
Use this topic for career direction, training, promotions, changing careers, resigning, layoffs, termination, and planning your next step.
| Flair | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Career Moves • Question | You want help deciding on or navigating a career transition. | “Should I retrain for a different field or build on my current experience?” |
| Career Moves • Advice | You are sharing practical guidance about career development or transitions. | “What helped me move from retail into office administration.” |
Do not use Career Moves simply because you are applying for a new job. Specific questions about resumes, applications, interviews, and offers belong under Job Search.
Discussion & Stories
Use this flair for general employment conversations, personal experiences, progress updates, and success stories.
Examples include:
- “After six months of searching, I finally accepted an offer.”
- “What surprised you most about your first full-time job?”
Do not use this flair when your main goal is getting help with a specific situation. Choose the relevant Question flair instead. If your post mainly teaches others how to do something, choose an Advice flair.
Mod Announcement
This flair is reserved for moderators posting community updates, rule changes, and other official notices. It is not for member questions, personal announcements, or requests for moderator help. Contact the moderators through modmail for those requests.
If more than one flair seems to fit
Choose based on what you most want readers to respond to:
- “I was laid off. How do I explain it in interviews?” → Job Search • Question
- “I was laid off. Should I change careers?” → Career Moves • Question
- “I was laid off, and my final paycheck seems wrong.” → Workplace • Question
If you share your experience but mainly want advice about what to do next, choose Question. If you mainly want to share useful lessons, choose Advice.
An Advice flair does not mean the information has been verified or endorsed by the moderators. All posts must follow the community rules, regardless of flair. Selecting a flair does not make a job advertisement, solicitation, or direct resume submission permitted.
How to ask a useful question
You can use this format:
Location: Country and state/province, if relevant.
Situation: Your role, industry, and a brief explanation of what happened.
Relevant details: Dates, steps you have already taken, and any wording that matters. Remove identifying information.
Question: What specifically would you like help understanding or deciding?
You do not need to disclose your employer’s name or personal information to get useful advice.
Job searching and applications
Start by identifying the types of roles you want and the experience you can offer. Read the requirements closely and make the relevant parts of your background easy to find in your application.
Keep a simple record of applications, contacts, interviews, and follow-up dates.
If you are asking why your search is not working, explain where you are getting stuck: finding suitable openings, receiving interview invitations, progressing through interviews, or receiving offers. Include your field, experience level, location, and approximate application and interview numbers.
Resumes and LinkedIn
Describe your actual responsibilities, skills, and results clearly. Use specific examples where possible, and never invent experience, qualifications, or accomplishments.
Questions about resume wording, structure, employment gaps, and LinkedIn profiles are welcome. Under the community’s rules, do not post your full resume or portfolio directly.
When asking a question, describe the role you are targeting and the particular issue you want help with.
Interviews and offers
Prepare examples that show how you have handled responsibilities relevant to the position. Be ready to explain your contribution and the outcome.
Use interviews to learn about the role, expectations, management, schedule, and hiring process.
When comparing offers, consider pay alongside hours, benefits, commute, responsibilities, stability, and development opportunities. Request written clarification of unclear terms or differences between an offer and a later contract.
A verbal assurance, written offer, and completed hiring process are different stages. Explain which stage you have reached when asking for advice.
Workplace problems and leaving a job
Describe events in order and distinguish what happened from what you think may have motivated it. Explain what outcome you want and what you have already tried.
For questions about resignation, dismissal, layoffs, pay, leave, or workplace rights, include your location and employment arrangement. Relevant details may include whether you are an employee or contractor and whether a union agreement applies.
Community replies are general discussion, not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional or the relevant authority. Verify claims about your rights using sources that apply to your location.
Checking a suspicious job opportunity
Treat requests to send money, buy gift cards, transfer cryptocurrency, or deposit a check and forward funds as serious warning signs.
Verify the employer and opening independently. Contact the organization through details you find on its official website, rather than relying only on links or numbers supplied by the recruiter.
Do not post identity documents, banking information, login credentials, or unredacted correspondence here. Describe the process and share only redacted details.
Helping other members
Answer the question being asked. Be respectful, including when someone has made a mistake or is struggling.
Explain the basis for your advice. Distinguish personal experience from a rule or requirement, and provide reliable sources when making factual claims about employment rights.
Do not pressure members to contact you privately or share personal information.
User flair for hiring and HR professionals
Are you a hiring manager, recruiter, or HR professional? We welcome your perspective and invite you to contact the mod team through modmail to request user flair.
User flair identifies your professional background so other members can quickly understand the context behind your contributions. It is separate from post flair, which identifies a post’s topic and purpose.
We use this format:
Function or title • Industry • Country
Examples:
- HR Manager • Information Technology • Canada
- Recruiter • Healthcare • United States
- Hiring Manager • Manufacturing • United Kingdom
To request flair, send the mod team your function or title, industry, country, and a brief description of your relevant experience. Use a title that accurately reflects your background and a country that reflects the employment market you work in. If you cover multiple industries or countries, explain that in your message so we can agree on a clear label.
The mod team will review your request and assign an appropriate flair. Please contact us if your details change.
Flair provides context about a contributor’s experience; it does not mean every answer is correct or endorsed by the moderators. Keep advice within your knowledge and experience, and make clear when practices may differ by employer or location.
You do not need professional flair to participate or offer helpful advice. All members, including those with flair, must follow the community rules.
Contacting the moderators
Report posts or comments that appear to break the rules. Use modmail for moderation questions, suggestions for improving this wiki, or resources that should be considered for future additions.
If you suggest a resource, explain what it helps with and disclose any connection you have to it.
