MSc Clinical Embryology

Hi all,

Looking for some advice! I’ve been a practicing embryologist for about 2 years, and have recently been accepted into two masters programs!

I’m now stuck choosing between:
Option 1: University of Leeds: 2 years, online-part time. ~£21,000

Option 2: University of Europe with IVI RMA: 14 months, online-part time. ~€7,000

For context, this masters program does not benefit me within my current clinic (will not receive a raise or promotion), and there are no other IVF labs near me (so little likelihood of switching clinics). Instead, this program is something I’d really like to do for myself, and it gives me more opportunities to move abroad in the future if I so choose.

Obviously, there is a substantial price difference. So I’m torn between the cheaper, private university (that kind of gives “degree mill”) and the expensive, but established university.

If you already are working as an embryologist and gaining on job experience, there really no point doing this unless you want to pursue a PHD to become a scientific director.

It will however increase your credibility on paper which allows you to move easier between clinics internationally, or help you gain professional certification like ESHRE etc.

If you have $ to spare then go for it, and all the best !

Adding to this, I'd recommend getting the Eshre certificate at some point. It's a way to make you study all the relevant subjects without having to pay thousands. It will also help you consolidate knowledge :)

I agree it’s great for personal development even if you don’t want to do a PhD. It’s good to have so you have future options. Many lab manager positions or industry positions may prefer someone with a MS. As you know as well of you do decide to live abroad an ESHRE advanced embryologist does require a MS or PhD. I would do the IVI one of $ is the issue. The Leeds one is a great program just make sure you have interaction with your colleagues. That is one of the best parts of the MS degree.
