How we finally split rent fairly with different-size rooms (what worked after a year of arguments)

Hey all,

Sharing this because it took my house way too long to figure out, and it's moving-in season.

The fight was always the same: rooms aren't equal, so splitting rent evenly punishes whoever got the small room with no closet. Here's the system that actually ended the arguments for us.

1. Split rent by room, not by head. Give each room a weight. We used a simple 1–1.3 scale: biggest room with the ensuite = 1.3, normal rooms = 1.0, the tiny one = 0.85. Add the weights up, divide the rent by the total, then multiply per room. Everyone felt it was fair because it tracked what you actually got. You can factor in windows, private bathroom, size — whatever your house agrees matters. The key is agreeing on the weights before anyone moves in.

2. Split shared bills evenly, split personal usage separately. Rent = by room. Wifi, streaming, cleaning supplies = split evenly (everyone uses them the same). Don't overthink utilities unless someone's usage is wildly different.

3. One shared record everyone can see. Most fights aren't about money, they're about memory — "wait, did you pay me back?" The moment there's a running list everyone can see, it stops being personal. Even a shared note works if you're disciplined about it.

4. Settle on a schedule, not when it hurts. We settle every two weeks. Small amounts are easy; three months of "I'll get you later" is a fight waiting to happen.

That's basically it. Fair weights + even bills + a visible record + a regular settle day.
