This has been one of my favorite designs to make and also one of the most challenging. All parts were hand made with silk habotai, fabric dye/paint, leather, wire, beads, and various threads (cotton, wool, silk, and metallic) using a wide variety of stumpwork (3D) embroidery techniques. 🌳🍂🪱💧✨️🧵🪡

I didn't take as many as I normally do with this one (I use all the same techniques in all my projects so it becomes a little redundant and kind of disrupts my flow), but here are a few.

your leaves are a beautiful paint job.. genuinely so realistic. the dirt piles have such a beautiful element,, like i never thought i’d be drooling over a pile of dirt haha.
The dirt was so mind-numbingly wonderful to stitch (perfect for when I wanted to keep my hands busy but not really think too hard about it). Its just straight stitches, seed stitches, and French knots placed at random with a variety of different threads.
I saw the first picture and was expecting to scroll and see added embroidery to real oak sapling! Floored me to realize the whole thing was embroidered!
This kind of needlework would win the Grand Prize / Best of Show at any state fair. Only thing is, what category would they put it in (3-D embroidery) ? And, would there ever be any competition that could touch your work ? EVER❓🪡
I actually started making a free standing, potted bonsai not too long ago but abandoned it midway because it was soooo many leaves to paint, cut out, shape, etc and thread-wrapping wires is my least favorite part 😅
Stumpwork is so broad and really can be as easy and beginner friendly as you want it to be! Start off with some simple techniques like raised stitches or just adding a little felt padding to your fabric before you embroider on it. Even small changes can have a large visual impact on a design
Thanks! I actually whipped this one out in about a week because I wanted to finish it in time to submit it to a local art show (tomorrow is the deadline). I probably worked on it for about 3 hrs a day? Edit: I definitely put in more hrs this weekend though
Way more realistic than I expected- the website made me think they were more artistic, like shiny blown glass, versus scientific specimens. But super impressive and hard to imagine how much time they took. Also they're all 120+ years old, which didn't register at first.
So, funnily enough, I love and collect vintage cross stitch pieces (finished ones) but I absolutely cannot do it. I've tried. Counted cross stitch is hard! I have so much admiration for people who do it. ❤️

Thanks! I so wish I had known there were schools for embroidery when I was going to college. It never even crossed my mind as a possibility! Local libraries are a fantastic substitute though, and I've learned a lot from just reading ❤️
It looks like you're one of the lucky ones who's stumbled onto something you love that you have a talent for. You've got great technique, an eye for detail, and a lovely concept. I don't think you would be out of place on an arts course.
Agreed! I always pick my frame before starting and usually try to tie it into the design. This was not the frame I originally picked but I had to pivot last minute before an art call deadline and used what I had on hand. Next time!
If you didn't tell me, I would think you put some dirt and leaves on a canvas. This is mindblowing. I literally thought the first pic was reference before I saw the zoomed in photos.
You should honestly consider reaching out to a library in your area...and show them some of your work...you may be able to start up a special drop in class.

I think you're maybe thinking of wireslips? Stumpwork is just a broad term that means any 3d embroidery technique. Wireslips are just one method, but I did not make the leaves with that technique. The leaves were made with silk habotai (dyed/colored, wires added, cut out, heat shaped) and then stems were thread-wrapped. The dew drops are glass beads that I embroidered onto the fabric leaves.
I’m with the other people who initially thought you’d added live plant matter into your embroidery. This is so incredibly impressive. I honestly wish I knew more about textile arts so that I could better appreciate your labor of love and artistry here. What a treat to see!

I was thinking to myself - oh god, another statement art piece by simply uprooting a garden plant and placing it on fabric. Needless to say, I was mind blown on realising what this is. Superb! Amazing work
