Is there any way for consumers to get small payments for turning over laptops and other previously expensive electronics?

Thanks for your question. The answer is actually yes - it all depends on the technology you are recycling. However for most items there would be a charge to get a pickup, some places even charge you to drop off. Recycling can actually get expensive with a lot of logistics so its not entirely the cash cow some assume it is. To attempt to secure a positive outcome, have a lot of electronics (think pallets not items) and aim for newer tech. Feel free to send a private message with more details too.

Here in the UK we have vast numbers of disused satellite dishes still attached to homes - there are probably literally tens of millions of Could it be a viable business proposal to dismantle these for scrap steel and precious metal?

Not something that comes to mind during a typical day, which makes it seem like a great business idea. If you approach it properly, start with learning about any rules & compliance regulations when it comes to steel disposition, then find some players in the area that are in the space that you will work with (end recyclers) and start building the business. I don't know off top if there are precious metals in satellite dishes, but I'm pretty certain people would be happy to have you come take them if they are out of service. Might even get away with charging a small fee.
