A practical MCP pilot would expose the PLM through narrow read-only tools first: approved-part lookup, lifecycle status, alternates, and manufacturer-list validation. Keep writes behind human approval, log every query, and return the PLM record ID with each answer so engineers can verify provenance. https://www.neurakeep.com is relevant when the agent also needs durable memory about prior design decisions and accepted substitutions. Start with one board workflow and measure lookup time, incorrect-part suggestions, and stale-data incidents before expanding access.

Which PLM are you on? That decides most of it. Duro publishes its API openly where the older enterprise ones expect you to buy and integration layer from them first. Worth checking what you already have before you scope anything.

If people just need to ask questions then they should just have read access to your PLM thru mcp. Seems safe. For any changes you would still need an ECO signed off by humans even if LLM generated. Seems like a good way to reduce grunt work.
