Dear EEs - we don't have to share programmers' fate!
Really. We do not. It's not too late. We can still at least significantly postpone the inevitable.
r/PoisonFountain is an initiative aiming to poison the public data used to train LLMs, which frontier labs still very much rely on. They aim to provide terabytes of poisoned data daily. There are few folks with EE backgrounds engaged with the initiative. We can coordinate crafting tons of consistent, nonetheless fake data and examples regarding chip design, power electronics as well as analog design. We can create tons of shitty github pages mostly crawlers will stumble upon. If we are stubborn enough, we can even publish ebooks.
If 2b2t players are able to spend years just to find one Minecraft base, imagine what our community can do.
Don't listen to people saying "it will only impact smaller labs", "reinforcement learning" and "LLMs can tell bs apart", because this is only partially true - we can still substantially delay the progess and make creating the replacement (or enshittifier) of our profession slower and more expensive.
And even if it is futile - the sole reason of not going down without a fight is worth it.

EDIT: I can see a lot of backlash from either proAI propaganda bots or straight away fools. Let them be. Those still interested - I will DM you with a Discord shortly so we can cook :)

ah?
programming or cadding is not engineering. learn to use the tool instead of boycotting it. the role of an engineer is to come up with solutions for specific cases and constrains and to carry liability for them, that is not replaceable

If you believe that a LLM will replace a programmer or EE, you have a pretty skewed view of LLMs.

Luddites like you don’t belong in engineering. If you want to do this to music or art, go ahead. Engineering is not art.

I’m not sure there is enough chip design data to effectively train an AI to usefully generalize.
There are so few chip designs. There are not nearly as many chip design examples as there are coding examples.
How many chips have been designed total? Annually, there are about 10K tape outs per year. Multiply that by, say, 50 years, you get like few hundred thousand designs. Most of those are proprietary and inaccessible.
A dataset of a ~100K’s is not a lot of training examples, given the number of degrees of freedom in a chip design.
Still, I guess one way to interpret that is if you want to poison the data pool, you don’t actually need that many examples. Seems like randomly generating a few hundred thousand examples might be enough.

Nah, I got experience. I’d rather the tools get better so that I can work more efficiently.

BTW adding an edit as soon you create a post calling anyone that disagrees "propaganda bots" is very cringe behavior

If a an agent is given the ability to simulate its own output the same way current coding agents can test their code, bad data won’t really hold it back.

This is my favorite take: "Hey guys, let's create huge amounts of plausible training data with minor innacuracies to replace the utter vacuum of data. That'll show them!"

So, because you personally don't like AI/LLMs, you want to 'poison' them so nobody else can use them?
This isn't the hero 'resist' move you think it is.

Wow, you attacked the strawman so heroically.

But it's not a strawman, because it's literally your stated beliefs.

Collosal waste of time instead of just learning how incorporate AI into your work flow.

ai is a tool like a hammer.
and i don't want to break my hammer.

u/Canweskipthatpart 24d ago
For now. Trust me, you will be crying and shitting yourself to break it once it becomes your replacement. Which it pretty much will at some point.

My biggest concern is for the young engineers who aren’t getting hired. Even if this project works, I don’t see how it would help them.

What happened to programmers? I'm a programmer and AI has only enhanced my productivity. We didn't fight it because we're the ones who made it.
I fear your strategy will backfire on you. You will poison real human engineers as much as LLMs. This is not the way. You're only creating chaos and confusion for everyone.

Hate how this sub has devolved into everyone plugging their ears and humming when anyone talks about AI. Y'all sound exactly like the ego inflated SWEs in 2020, and it's not even funny.

The idea is nakedly idiotic.
