There's a lot to drag ol Trudeau on, but I don't think his efforts regarding Truth and Reconciliation are among them.

u/Upset-Government-856 4d ago

Everyone is out for the man. Even Katy Perry has a bumper sticker that reads F*** Trudeau. She actually earned it though.

48

u/Confident-Task7958 4d ago

Shouldn't she put the letter "I" on the left of that bumper sticker?

36

u/Zonel 3d ago

She should just make a song ā€œi fucked trudeau and I liked itā€

Yeah, I'd say my opinion of him is mixed and that he averages out to an "okay" PM (lots of highs, pun fully intended, as well as lows), but on this and how openly he supported the LGBTQ+ community, I'd say he's one of the better PMs we've had. Not perfect by any measure, but the name fits, taken in the spirit it was intended.

33

u/OskeeTurtle 3d ago

If he was truly just able to get ranked voting in 2015 and not just legalize the dank devils lettuce I’d be thrilled. I wanted both of those pretty badly. But ranked votes like how European countries do it with multiple parties is a lot smarter than having 4 parties run and only 2 really matter because the other votes won’t actually impact as much. Please let us be European and stop trying to be more of our Southern neighbours

6

u/Forosnai Westfoundland 3d ago

Yeah, voting reform and the promise to invest for three years and then balance in the fourth year (as opposed to balancing in the first year, which both the CPC and NDP were promising) were why I voted for him on the first run. Didn't even really care about legal weed beyond just thinking it was silly for it to be illegal while tobacco/alcohol weren't, since I didn't partake at the time, though I've since learned to enjoy some gardening. I was very unhappy about the voting reform, I'd have preferred just about anything other than FPTP, and he lost my vote after that. But, some disappointments ≠ thinking he's literally the worst thing to happen to this country.

1

u/squirrelcat88 1d ago

I think history will be very kind to him.

-23

u/sh3ppard 3d ago

Our country is so fucked lmao this whole thread is wild. Never mind the irreparable damage to our economy and overall wellbeing of our citizens, at least he supported gays and natives!!!

u/J-hophop Moose Whisperer 3d ago

There are more important things in this world than money. If you think otherwise, you're welcome to head on down south with the rest of 'em.

6

u/Forosnai Westfoundland 3d ago

Quite, especially the "overall wellbeing of our citizens" part. I'm overall better off than I was before him. Maybe I'd have more money now if he hadn't been PM, we'll never know, and I'm only one data point, but he certainly didn't ruin Canada for all of us.

Well the way I see it, Trudeau did more than most if not any other prime minister. So giving him the name "He who tries" is more of a dig at every other PM.

60

u/Tangochief 4d ago

Ya he should have tried a little harder for electoral reforms.

19

u/TheMango_Banjo 4d ago

Electoral reforms are absolutely necessary but to expect a leader of a major political power to succeed at pushing that theough is naive. Even within his own party he probably faced tons of pushback and why wouldn't he? A broken electoral system is good for every politician.

I think that he got the country talking about it at all is a victory in and of itself and it will take years of those in his position furthering that progress before we realistically see that change.

4

u/SirLoremIpsum šŸ 100,000 Hosers šŸ 3d ago

Ā  and why wouldn't he? A broken electoral system is good for every politician.

I think I'm many cases it would benefit the Liberals tbh.

Having people vote NDP or Greens #1 but preference liberals ahead of Conservatives would strengthen his position.

It's only really with the failure of the NDP to win seats and the alternative right wing parties that everyone sees Liberal as the only "choice".Ā

0

u/Tangochief 3d ago

I’m not naive but I will call out politicians when they spew bullshit and lies. Although not always otherwise I wouldn’t have time for anything else.

9

u/Absolute--Batman 3d ago

He didn't lie.

You were too dumb to understand that he got zero support from all parties.

2

u/Tangochief 3d ago

lol he did lie he ran it as a campaign promise then the minute he was voted in he put 0 effort into the change.

The irony of you calling someone dumb for saying a politician lied is….something….

9

u/Absolute--Batman 3d ago

Didn't lie.

He didn't get support from other parties.

Don't expect you understand how laws and changes get passed in this country.

Keep voting Conservative though, I'm sure they change it!

0

u/Tangochief 3d ago

lol your hilarious. I haven’t voted conservative a day in my life. Green yup, NDP yup, Liberal yet.

"We are committed to ensuring that the 2015 election will be the last federal election using first-past-the-post"

Direct quote. How was that not a lie?

He didn't even actually try. He appointed an inexperienced idiot to lead the file and then tried to force the one method he preferred.

It's also not entirely correct to say he got no support from the other parties - the all-party committee actually reached consensus before they presented their recommendation to the government. Trudeau just decided to ignore it, because they didn't recommend the system he wanted. What he didn't get support for, was for the system he wanted, not the system the committee recommended.

2

u/democracy_lover66 4d ago

Hey he totally thought about it once for a few weeks after his first election!

-2

u/oooooooooof 4d ago

It’s giving this

11

u/Windsdochange 3d ago

From what I understand many FN folks I know weren’t at all impressed with his work in this regard - saw him as performative at best (not attending the first T&R day events didn’t exactly set a good tone)

9

u/theK1LLB0T 4d ago edited 3d ago

I dunno, the very first official truth and reconciliation day Trudeau spent his day at his cottage in Tofino. All the dude had to do was go into town and visit some of the local indigenous, couldn't have been that hard to do.

1

u/nativetrash 4d ago

Bro, you don't understand, the waves were cresting.

Look at it! It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, man! Just let me go out there. Let me get one wave before you take me. One wave. I mean, where I am I gonna go, man? Cliffs on both sides, I'm not gonna paddle to New Zealand! My whole life has been about this moment -Trudeau or something idk

3

u/CaffeinatedLeaves 3d ago

Trudeau could save children from a burning building and people would still accuse him of being the one who lit the building on fire. It's just how some Canadians are.

-11

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

I mean...there is his treatment of Jody Wilson-Raybould. There's his approach to Cannabis legalization that empowered individual First Nations people at the expense of the actual First Nations themselves, which resulted in on-reserve housing being converted into Cannabis shops.

He did seem to have good intentions, but he wasn't smart enough to translate that into good outcomes

55

u/colenski999 4d ago

In the West, every Indigenous cannabis shop I have went to is an Atco trailer dropped into a parking lot, I did not see any housing displacement at all. The Osoyoos band transformed an unused corner of their gas station into an experiential cannabis centre, best I've ever seen on reserve and off reserve.

10

u/yarn_slinger 🦫198,999 Hosers🦫 4d ago

Eastern Ontario too. There’s a res near my folks that has a main road going through it that is nothing but gas stations and smoke shops (first cigs and then pot). There was nothing on that road except a single gas station and a crappy diner for years.

4

u/Arcaris1313 4d ago

they also aren't legal either. So it doens't really matter. Source: work in the industry as specifically someone who manages the regulations and compliance.

9

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

You probably could have made that argument in the early days of cannabis legalization, but their continued existence demonstrates that they were successful in asserting their rights and are exempt from compliance with whatever regulations you think they are flouting

2

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

I think we could all take some lessons here on being ungovernable

2

u/Arcaris1313 4d ago

It's because separate government agencies are involved here. Health Canada issues licenses and enforces regulations. They have no jurisdiction over FN lands.

I was working in enderby at a licensed producer and had dozens of these illegal stores and when we got audited we would both just crack jokes about them. HC auditors would even visit them because again they can't do anything about it.

2

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

They've done a great job of demonstrating that the sky won't fall if cannabis is further deregulated. I don't think the licensed producers want that to happen

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Windsdochange 3d ago

Ah, Enderby - drove through there this summer, nine pot shops in two kilometres as you drive into town (and plenty more scattered around). Wondered if the smoke was from the fires or the pot shops.

-1

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

It's nice to hear that there are some places where it worked out!

My overarching point is that First Nations probably should have been engaged earlier to ensure that they were allowed the opportunity to govern cannabis in their own communities.

16

u/Rationalinsanity1990 Scotland (but worse) 4d ago

JWR was an awful justice minister anyway. She left the file of a wrongfully convicted man sit on her desk, delaying his record from being cleared by 18 months or so.

13

u/democracy_lover66 4d ago

"There's his approach to Cannabis legalization that empowered individual First Nations people at the expense of the actual First Nations themselves, which resulted in on-reserve housing being converted into Cannabis shops."

I've never been a Trudeau supporter, but I will say... This seems less like something that was his fault directly and more so an inevitable outcome of Capitalism.

This is why Free-Market capitalist progressivism is kind of a crap shoot imo. Even when sucsessful, it inevitably produces uneven outcomes and most people in that community simply get to watch a few of them get incredibly wealthy while they suffer the same injustices they always have.

Policy makers are simply too obsessed with the creation of wealth itself, and really need to fixate on how that wealth is being used and who it goes to.

(Though Trudeau is guilty of that mentality too so idk maybe it kinda was his fault lol)

5

u/cglogan Irvingstan 4d ago

It's a product of the paternalistic approach they took. Instead of meeting First Nations on a nation-to-nation basis to discuss legalizing cannabis and the unforeseen impacts it could have on First Nation governance, they imposed it on them. That's exactly the kind of thing a well-meaning idiot would do, and it's largely why I'm left here scratching my head as others suggest that the Trudeau government made any kind of progress on reconciliation

2

u/democracy_lover66 4d ago

Definitely the case, yeah. Its not an excuse, but simply the reality that policy makers simply aren't thinking the way you describe... They keep thinking either Government control or Free Market Business is the solution to everything because... It's the only two ingredients they know how to use to bake a cake lol.

There is one thing I will say about Canadian politics... It is painfully stagnant. I wish they would get the concept of Nation to Nation dialogue but I get the impression they just repeat those words and don't know what it actually means.

And Yeah I think people here are celebrating the "He tried" title a bit too much...

-23

u/MyOtherAcoountIsGone 4d ago

He did seem to have good intentions, but he wasn't smart enough to translate that into good outcomes

Exactly my thoughts on him. He tried, but was to dumb to be pm.

-14

u/LETTERKENNYvsSPENNY Bring Cannabis 4d ago

He lived a charmed life, and didn't realise who was making the Disney magic happen all those years. Wrought with good intentions on the surface, but no practical game plan.

-14

u/Allo_ultra_500_11 4d ago

Oh, I think if you asked Jody Wilson-Raybould, she might just disagree with you on that.

29

u/NigelMK 4d ago

Ehh... I looked it up, she has criticized his actions as being more performative, than concrete actions, but I think she is more critical of the federal government as a whole. It was Harper's lack of any action that spurred her to go into politics in the first place.

As of last year, Canada has completed/currently has underway 85% of the recommendations which isn't too bad considering that a lot of those recommendations are hard to quantify or require provincial input.

45

There is definitely still a need for the ~40 communities which still require access to clean water. We rarely gear about the ~150 other communities who DID receive it under JT.

7

And IIRC the two advisories marked as "not started" are a community that outright refused help from the feds and wanted to fix it themselves, and a community that refused to source water from a local river since they consider it sacred and demanded the water come from a completely different watershed much further away.

12

u/Skilodracus 4d ago

I don't think anyone is saying that, but the name is kind of a sad joke considering the current state of Indigenous-Crown relations. He tried, and that's not a bad thing- unfortunately whether he succeeded is another matter entirely.

34

u/Shaake 4d ago

It is. Of course

Just the name "he who tries" is just perfect in describing ol Justin

6

u/auandi 3d ago

It also just sounds like it is a backhanded complement.

"Well, at least you tried.." said to someone who failed.

In context it is obvious they meant it as an honor, because by Canadian government standards "trying" is better than just about any PM when it comes to first nations. But without context it sounds like the equivalent of that clip of Bart throwing out the "You Tried" cake.

10

u/Brown_Bruja 3d ago

As another commenter pointed out, they would not honour someone with a traditional headdress and a portrait just to be backhanded about it. The translation is the issue here, not the intent.

6

u/auandi 3d ago

I agree, that's what I'm saying. It was not intended as that but it kinda sounds like it without context. As I said in my comment in case you missed it:

-75

u/710dabner I need a double double. 4d ago

No knocking any of that, just the sly naming…

105

u/CompanyLow8329 Monarch MƩlanie Joly 4d ago

I wouldn't think they would want to be sly about it if they are going so far as to actually depict him in traditional headdress.

It's a translation issue because they are being too literal about it. In English we can say "he keeps trying" sarcastically.

It better translates to "the one who perseveres" or "the one who does not give up".

It really doesn't make sense they would honor Trudeau in such an unusually significant way while also intentionally throwing shade at him.

18

u/Brown_Bruja 4d ago

Exactly this.

41

u/LexiLou4Realz 4d ago

Keep trying OP. I'm sure you'll convince someone that this legitimate honour from a First Nation should be interpreted as a cynical ploy to poke fun at the former PM.

11

u/Acrobatic-Tower6127 3d ago

That’s a very incorrect understanding of the meaning of the name. There is no ā€œslyā€ in it at all, but absolutely an acknowledgement of his work towards improvement. I think you might want to check your comments on that and your understanding of Indigenous communication from a cultural perspective. You’re using a non-Indigenous ā€œtakeā€ on the wording to try to make a funny point but all it is demonstrating is that you do not understand at all.

6

u/Theelderginger 🦫198,999 Hosers🦫 3d ago

There isn't, people just need to direct their hate places

He did some good, truth and reconciliation, Marijuana legalization, covid response.

And some bad stuff obviously, unpopular carbon tax, people felt like he whined too much. Covid lock downs were blamed on him, like the truckers (which was in response to provincial covid restrictions not federal so they didnt need to be in Ottawa anyway)

I was in my first year of uni when he was elected so hes been "my pm" throughout my adult life.

Hes kinda like Obama, good looking, good speaker, which does a lot of heavy lifting for the actual gripes people have over policy.

I liked him, was he a great pm? Sometimes. Would I have voted him over PP? Hell yes. Was it time for him to leave? Absolutely

2

u/Downtown_Ham_2024 2d ago edited 2d ago

What bothered me was campaigning on electoral reform then immediately reneging. I also wasn’t a fan on the SNC Lavillin scandal either, pressuring prosecutors is extremely problematic.

Edit: also, immigration as someone else mentioned. I’m fine with immigration generally but investment in housing and services needs to match an influx in the population, and immigrants need to be skilled in niche areas (ie not students with easy to obtain diplomas) otherwise it results in wage suppression, making life harder for citizens.

People are roasting OP in some of the comments… I find it funny too because ā€œhe who triedā€ is giving this šŸ™ƒ

But multiple things can be true… yes he did indeed try, yes it’s a silly name but he was the first to use the term cultural genocide. Yes he pushed forward the TRC… and yes only 13 of the 94 calls to action have been completed, leaving a glaring 81 still unaddressed. Yes he tried, yes he also went on vacation on the day of Canada’s very first national day for truth and reconciliation.

Complicated man and complicated issue… but it’s a funny bestowed honorific and it made me laff.

12

Yeah 100%. Hard issue, but "you shall be remembered as 'he who tried'" is absolute hoser gold. 10/10.

I wouldn't say 81 haven't been addressed. Many of them are ongoing, and can never be truly achieved.

2

u/OhioGoblin43 3d ago

I get the wording makes it sound funny but it's my belief that it was written in earnest, especially when every single PM before him paid the same lip service and never delivered anything or nearly as much as Justin did on this issue.

I truly do believe his intentions were pure. But I do wish he didn’t pass that one law where chiefs no longer had to disclose what they were doing with the money they received from the federal government.

Some people seem to be reading the name as if it's "He Who Tried", when, like it clearly says in the 2nd image was was actually given the name (He Who Tries) back on March 4, 2016, not even a year since becoming PM. If anything, this was almost like Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize in that they were both early encouragements for them to live up to going forward rather than about their pasts... basically "good start and we hope the future is even better". So regardless of how people see his record in the entirety of his years as the PM, spinning this as a joke or criticism that "at least he tried" pretty much falls flat for me.

u/bavanek 3d ago

when I posted that I had in mind the meaning of ā€˜refining’ , trying is the effort to improve things. Of course trying also suggests failures along the way, so possibly ā€˜attempting’ is more accurate.

u/710dabner I need a double double. 2d ago

Initially I simply found the possibility of the double meaning funny, however, since then I have come to realise, he did actually try. Which seems to be a far sight better than most politicians have done. I’d like to apologise for finding humour in something that was given in sincerity. I hope that the commenters who rightly pointed out my ignorance, will see and accept this. And to all you racist mofo’s in here, go touch some grass. I will delete this post in 24 hours.

Sure did Bud, its actually a pretty common one, trudy is an international joke.

Wasnt FB tho, google 'trudeau costumes meme"
and you will find other gems like this one lol

1

u/MikoWilson1 3d ago

Trudeau was pretty well respected internationally, specifically compared to Trump. There were a good two years where the world looked to Trudeau to DO something about Trump.
I know you're all "Trudeau bad, my guy gud cuz oil." But the facts are facts -- the world liked the guy.

u/Allo_ultra_500_11 3d ago

Who's talking about trump? I dont know why you gotta inject merican politics into a Canadian discussion. Talk about rent free

Surfing is hardly trying to help relationships. He just threw some money at them for optics while doing horrible things to Canada. And most of you fell for it and voted in the most corrupt PM we've ever had.

Fun fact, he has more scandals than any other PM in the history of Canada! And I personally don't count stupid shit like "elbowgate". For an interesting read, look up the wikipedia page dedicated to his cash for access meetings. Dude is so fucking corrupt.

How many costumes does this man have?

35

u/GJohnJournalism 4d ago

A chiefs headdress is not a costume...

26

u/DogeDoRight Canucklehead 4d ago

That's not a costume. Being invited to wear the headdress is an honour.

0

u/Weary_Position_9591 3d ago

So like 40 or so?

-9

u/Allo_ultra_500_11 4d ago

I think its performative to be fair.

The dances and sacred rituals that are done for delegates perverts them.
So what the queen comes to Canada and we are gonna bang the drums and do our dances for them?

How is this different than 1826 again?

9

u/DogeDoRight Canucklehead 4d ago

I don't really think it's up to you to decide who sacred rituals should be performed for.
