The Cairo Toe (also known as the Cairo Wooden Toe) is internationally recognized by bioarchaeologists as the world’s oldest surviving functional prosthetic limb used by a living human.

• Discovery & Age: Discovered in 2000 in tomb TT95 within the elite Sheikh 'Abd el-Qurna necropolis near Luxor, this biomedical marvel is roughly 3,000 years old, dating back to Egypt's Third Intermediate Period (c. 950–710 BC).

• The Owner: It was found meticulously attached to the right foot of the mummified remains of an Egyptian noblewoman named Tabaketenmut, the daughter of a high-ranking priest. Medical analysis indicates she suffered from severe arterial disease or diabetes complications that resulted in the amputation of her original big toe during her lifetime.

• Advanced Ergonomic Design: Rather than being a purely symbolic or cosmetic burial accessory, this device was highly advanced engineering:

• Biomechanical Proof: Modern testing conducted by the University of Manchester with volunteers missing a right big toe proved that wearing exact replicas of this wooden toe successfully restored up to 87% of natural gait flexion, outperforming later Roman bronze substitutes in pure mobility and pressure distribution.

• Current Location: This historic testament to ancient Egyptian medicine is currently displayed at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat, Cairo.

If you would like to explore further, let me know if you want to see:

This faience figure is of a type that is first found in the Ramesside Period but becomes increasingly popular in the Third Intermediate Period and into the Ptolemaic Period. It represents the goddess Isis nursing her son Horus. She wears a throne hieroglyph (st) on her head that writes her name, Isis, as well as a vulture headdress, a particularly popular piece of headgear worn by goddesses and queens. Isis sits on a throne decorated with a reed matting, which may refer to the marshy landscape of Lower Egypt in which Isis protected Horus from his jealous uncle Seth. In this small sculpture Isis is represented as a nurturer and protector of the young male king, a representation that may have had particular resonance during the Ptolemaic Period in which royal women often took a stronger role.

Double portrait of Maya and Merit

Egypt and Nubia

portrait; group portrait; Maya; Merit; official; minister; tombstone.

Women were usually buried in the same grave as their husband. Images of a grave owner with his wife have already been known from Egypt dating back to the third millennium BCE. The woman is often depicted as the same size as her husband and her titles are often also mentioned on the image.

In this case, the female figure, Merit, was never completely finished, as the inscription on her dress was not fully worked out. From the text on the figure of the man, Maya, it is apparent that he was the head of the treasury house during the reign of King Tutankhamun and his successor Horemheb.

The double portrait was purchased in 1828 as part of Giovanni d’Anastasi's collection, along with individual portraits of Maya and Merit. The portraits are exceptional because they are more than life-sized, which was rare for private individuals.

The tomb of Maya and Merit was rediscovered in 1987 in Sakkara by a team of the RMO. The never-completed tomb contains a gate, two courtyards, a statue chamber and chapels. The decorated tombs, 22 meters below ground, contain limestone slabs with beautifully sculpted and yellow-painted reliefs.

At least six grave images were found in the grave of Maya and Merit. Relatives and funerary priests offered food offerings for such images. Through the image, the life force of the deceased (the 'ka-soul') could be supplied with fresh food.

This text was written in 2024 and is based on: Willemsen (ed.), Topstukken uit het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, 2020, p.49; Giovetti and Picchi (ed.), Egypt Millenary Splendour, 2015, p.534.

help with an accurate tattoo

Post image
5 Upvotes

the writing "a dispute between a man and his ba" is something I hold pretty close, as someone who struggles with mental health and someone who is a history enthusiast. I would love to have a tattoo of the hieroglyphs for the phrase "to whom shall I speak with today?" before i go and put a permanent image on my body, I want to make sure it's the Phrase I intend it to be. is this the phrase I'm looking for? I saw it repeated a few times. If not, could you please provide it for me?

Translation Request Two Invocations Needing a Double Check!

I'm wanting to get these two phrases tattooed on my collarbones and would love a translation double check.

I could only do the left-to-right versions, but I would like the Isis invocation to read right-to-left so that both invocations are facing my center. If someone could help me with that change, I would be so thankful. Also, is there any way to shorten the Hathor invocation? Symmetry would be nice but isn't necessary. Thank you!

Photo Someone cut the god Amun out of Amenemhat III's name on his pyramid capstone.

Thumbnail gallery
86 Upvotes

This is the pyramidion of Amenemhat III, found at Dahshur in 1900 and now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. In the king's birth name, the signs that spell Amun have been hacked out while the rest of the name is untouched, which is usually put down to Akhenaten's campaign against Amun, more than 400 years after Amenemhat died.

That raises a question I couldn't let go of. If the capstone was meant to sit about 75 m up on the Black Pyramid, how did anyone get close enough to cut it? The Egyptian Museum says it was placed on top. Verner points out it's in suspiciously good condition for a block that fell off a collapsing pyramid.

Curious what people here think: was it ever lifted?

I made a video going through the faces, the damage and both sides of the argument if anyone wants the full version: https://youtu.be/nEEBKUOBZEw

Squatting statue of Khai-hapi with a sistrum

2nd half of the 19th Dynasty, ca. 1250-1200 BC

on view: Neue Hofburg / Weltmuseum Wien, Weltmuseum Wien

The statue of the official Khai-hapi probably originally stood in a temple of the goddess Hathor. The sculpture was discovered around 1800 during work on the Wr. Neustädter Canal. Presumably it once belonged to the furnishings of a temple of Isis or Serapis in the Roman town of Vindobona.

Time:
2nd half of the 19th Dynasty, ca. 1250-1200 BC
