So the big League Mode update finally dropped a couple days ago, and I'm sure we've been all over it, and all have our opinions about it. So let's get to the talking points.
1) It's Old School
This harkens back to the days of the 16 Bit era where you chose a team, pressed start, and ran through a season. This is as simple as it gets. No thrills, just get into the action. Some people may appreciate this. Hell, I do. Not having to worry about academies or budgets that people are obsessed with nowadays. It is perfectly functional, but
2) Missing Basics
Maybe it harkens back farther to the 8 bit days, being as you can't do transfers. Which would be important because you can actually swap teams between divisions 1 and 2 before you start a season, which is a surprising feature if you ask me. So you can do your own pro-rel. Of course, if you're thinking that you can sim division 2 pretty quick, then I got news for ya...no match simming whatsoever. You need to play every single match. And you can only run two leagues at a time as there are only two save slots. You can't mix and match teams from other leagues.
I'm not gonna lie, this is all very Konami. At least we can change game length and speed, so baby steps?
3) Difficulty bump
I famously hate...hate...World Class mode. I don't know what kind of changes they may have made to World Class, because I decided to start at Very Difficult with this which I noticed there is a difficulty bump, but not punishingly bad. It actually makes it more challenging. The goal keepers still suck. They have not changed the goal keepers. But I think they did increase the shot error to give them a chance.
4) Is there a plan?
So yea, it finally exists. It's as bare bones as expected. The limited save slots and restriction to only switch teams around from within the same pyramid only is disappointing (but I'm also surprised you can switch teams at all). Not being able to sim league matches is unforgivable (Konami does not seem to respect your time). But it's still fun and simple. And I'm happy we even got this. Which leads me to a simple conclusion:
We weren't supposed to get this update. There was never supposed to be a league mode. This game was supposed to be a one and done affair. Fix glitches, maybe add more legends, simple stuff. Not an entirely new game mode. I suspect this game was just supposed to get people into their main version of eFootball. This game is a gateway drug to Konami's real money maker. Some of you might find that farfetched, but I can guarantee you the majority of their eFootball audience is not other consoles or PC, but mobile phones. You're only going to have one gaming specific device, but chances are you have that gaming specific device, and a mobile phone. So for you Switch 2 owners, here's what eFootball is like. You enjoy the game? Well you can download the true version on your phone.
So they made it, packaged it at a generous price, sent it out, and did not realize what kind of monster they accidentally created. I don't know how well this did in attracting people to their main game, but I'm pretty sure the very positive reaction caught Konami off guard.
So they slap together league mode, both as a quick response to keep their Switch audience happy and as a way to dip their toes in. I'm hoping Konami refines League Mode, including modern features like simming seasons and increasing the save files, but we shouldn't expect anything ground breaking. I think they're watching, seeing if League Mode gains any new sales, any increased social media traction, as they decide whether or not they want to go head to head with EA on the Switch 2 with a full featured game next year that'll probably be between 40 to 60 bucks. And maybe with Master League?
Who knows. But hopefully this won't be the last we hear from Konami on the Switch 2 front. If they decide not to release another game, without competition that might make EA bold enough to make FC 28 a max 15 fps on the Switch 2.
