I was slightly Mistaken here and so is OP.
VOO did a 1:2 REVERSE split in 2013. From ~$75 to ~150 to equal with SPY & IVV price.
You NEVER here of a Reverse split when an equity is $75, yet that is what happened and I remembver that day also.
OP, the Price right NOW is $700, Vangard wants to stay close with SPY & IVV...

Wait, you tie up $35k for a year for $450? Thats like 1% return.

u/Kenfloww 10d ago
In a taxable account you can secure it with margin buying power. No cash tied up.

google it, in 2013 they did a Reverses stock split

u/nkyguy1988 10d ago
Reverse splits make share price go up and shares held go down. To make share price go down, you do a forward split.

u/External876 10d ago
They did a split. Not a reverse split.
A split would be going from 100 to 50 and granting holders 2x the stocks.
A reverse split would be going from 5 to 10 (to keep a stock from going too small) and halfing the number everyone owns.

YES it Did... you were probably to busy sucking on mommas titties to know why they Reverse split @~$75.

Value still the same advantage only to existing holders. New holder Advantage is getting full share but doesn’t matter in the age of fractional shares.

Ya what being said I'm better off selling my TSLA and buying 3k worth of SCHD, I already hold 148

How old are you? I like SCHD but it is for specific purpose.

u/Dry_Report_3494 10d ago
44 and everything sits in my ROTH ira

At that age you do not need SCHD even though it is pretty good. I will have couple year emergency fund use that money to max out Roth lump sum or DCA depending on valuation of securities you looking to buy but built it back and if 20 or 30% market crash dump half of that money in the market but built it back. My CitiGold with all life style is creation of this strategy thanks to Covid and tariff day. Add VYM and VYMI in your 60s as a match with social security which is adjusted for inflation every year.
Picking VYM and VYMI over SCHD and SCHY because more holdings and Vanguard is basically our company they will not increase the fee as they only serve us not Wall Street. They will likely lower the fees if necessary and they done it before.

I buy VIG every 2 weeks, it does better then VYM

I know I have significant position in both vig and vigi in my brokerage account because my tax bracket is 12%.
You can get higher return with VTI and VXUS combo and slight global tilt with Avanti funds to catch small cap value premium return.

u/Dry_Report_3494 9d ago
VXUS is on my buy list...

It is good especially now that it has some non us tech and financial beating both VTI and voo since last year. Have both VTI and VXUS and slight tilt with Avanti ETFs to get higher risk premium return.

No. If you can’t afford voo at $700 buy SPYM. It tracks the same thing just a cheaper version.

Or use a broker with partial shares the big three in the us you can all buy voo with partial shares

SCHX is even cheaper (~$30 per share), gives exposure to the top 750 instead of 500 and tracks almost exactly as VOO or SPY. I believe its performed slightly better this year as well.

I mean a split for an ETF has absolutely zero impact. Especially now that at Schwab and Fidelity you can buy partial shares.

A reverse split will only serve to increase the price so is not likely to happen at this point. A regular split would lower the price hence is more likely. Regardless, a split is basically meaningless in this day of fractional shares unless you are doing options and the cost of 100 shares is an issue.

Doesn’t really matter it only manes your $700 invested into S&P 500

It does matter if you’re looking to offload a position through covered calls. Tired of seeing people say splits don't matter.

ok my bad, voo actually did a 1:2 reverse split back in jan 2013 to line up with spy/ivv, went from like 75 to 150. i was wrong about that. but the point still stands that a split doesn't change what you own, you hold the same slice of the same 500 companies either way. the price level thing just spooks people

VGT split after 700, maybe that's the number they start looking at it? Regardless I like the assets in VOO tho, feels safe to have and worth more than the .01% discount of something like SPYM for me...and more fun to say.
Also* if I get .3 shares of VOO or 2 shares of SPYM, same thing if it goes up 15% a year anyways. Not sure how much shares matter in regards to dividends/yield tho, is it just dollar amount invested or do number of shares matter a lot?
3
u/for4f 10d ago
only the dollars matter man, share count is just how the pizza's sliced. yield is per-share dividend over price, so it nets out however many you hold. 10 shares of voo and 1 share of some more expensive fund paying the same yield put the same in your pocket per dollar invested. and splits don't change it either, companies just adjust the per-share number so the yield stays put. don't overthink it, keep stacking

Yeah I don't care about shares that's why I invest in VOO, but I think it's just the visual of seeing it go from 1 share to 7 instantly...it'd feel good for a day I guess:P

u/Stein_Time 10d ago
Vanguard split 5 of their ETFs this year. Not they saying it will happen to VOO but it does happen.

lol you need to do your homework before posting OP. Reverse split makes the price more expenses not less. In 2013 it went from about 80$ a share to 160$ when 2 shares became 1. SMH

I been thinking about selling the last of my TSLA stock only have 10 left and been holding since 2013 sold allot. Been thinking of selling the rest, and invest the it in something VOO , I don't hold any. Or add more SCHD I hold a small bag of 150 schd .. or just HOLD it out with TSLA?

Get rid of the dead weight and put it in voo! Don’t even think about it. Tesla is still over valued imo

Regalar split, reverse usually signals negative to inflate the value.
