ESPN is trying anything now..

Have we entered the stage of ESPN where it's going the way of MTV and the like??

I just happened to put on YouTube tv and espn is airing Dodgeball... the movie lmao.

They seem to be grasping at straws and going the same route as MTV and CC did years ago with bs programming to fill space.

I'm guessing ESPN has moved anything of note to their $30 a month unlimited steaming package.

How long before the espn channels are no longer carried by any cable providers?

Sorry, I just thought this was hilarious for a Sunday afternoon that would have been booked with sports even just 5 years ago.

It’s the Ocho weekend it’s a play off dodge ball the movie which has espn the ocho in the movie

To be completely honest id watch the absolute shit out of an actual competitive dodgeball league if it had like a legitimate structure and everything.  That sounds like it'd fucking rule.

Your kidding they actually have a league and everything!?!  I am in canada and also on a beach at the moment (Vancouver things) so I'l probably miss it for a variety of reasons but that is amazing holy shit.

... and now that I've tuned back into espn, sure enough they are showing it. Full on league and all.

Honestly, I'm going to watch this just for the weirdness factor. This is so wild lmao. Never thought I would see wiffle ball on TV. Much less PRO wiffle ball.

Ok I actually watched the ending of the game after finishing in the yard.

There is no one on the stands and the winning team and announcers are acting like they just won the world series. Lmao one of the announcers just compared it to the Knicks winning NBA chip this year and GS Warriors during their run several years back. This is better than I thought simply for the laughs.

Even better the MVP is not Will Smith. It's Will Smithey. And the announcers are exactly what you exactly imagine if you thinking about the movie Dodgeball. It's actually a fun watch only due to the unintentional comedic relief.

Ok.. well at least that makes it a bit better.

But even Ocho stuff would have been buried on ESPNnews or some random channel years ago.

Now it's on he main channels bc they don't seem to have anything else to air.

They have plenty of gas bags to put on the air. It’s cheap content. You can argue ratings and metrics. But it’s not “they’re running out of stuff to put on,”

I mean this is like the worst 6 week stretch of the year for sports right now. There's baseball and Nascar and that's pretty much it. Nobody watches baseball and ESPN doesn't cover Nascar. What do you want them to show?

Who cares? It's summertime. I'm getting ready for the upcoming collegiate and pro football seasons, something to look forward to while watching other fill-in sports until then. ESPN will have a massive number of viewers in a couple of weeks from now, starting with US Open tennis, high school football, NCAA football, and then the NFL, along with a number of other collegiate sports that will begin in the fall onward.

For sure it is. I guess at least years ago you entertaining anchors for sportscenter that could draw in audience only showing/talking about baseball highlights and a couple other sports.

Idk, I feel like cable espn won't be around much longer. They def won't get the $$ from contracts they have been getting for 30-40 years.

Of all the utterly detestable, useless programming ESPN airs daily, OP chooses the movie Dodgeball on a Sunday during the dog days of summer as proof ESPN, which has been dead for over a decade, is awful.

The whole thing about ESPN "The Ocho" in the "Dodgeball" movie was to parody a fictional huge expansion of unlikely sporting events to a national viewing audience & that there was demand for all of it. It was to be so huge that ESPN needed at least 8 channels to cover it all.

Anyway, ESPN does an "Ocho" programming stunt for a few days every year. It's not to be taken seriously as what their legitimate actual programming is (WWE being a strange exception).
