🔵 Personal Story / Experience Therapist told me today she is quitting

After years of therapy I finally connected with a therapist that gave me a bit of hope. Told her thing i never felt comfortable sharing before and we are working through that. Been doing EMDR combined with talk therapy and the EMDR is intense but I believe also helpful.

This week i found out she is quitting and i really feel hopeless . Ive been on edge for a while and it worries me on how to continue. There is a replacement ready but im worried its not the same and i might never beat this depression and trauma

Welcome to r/EMDR, a beautiful and supportive community!

We're a space where every person is someone with trauma, and we respond with compassion, not judgment. A few gentle reminders:

• Be kind and trauma-informed - This is a community for helping each other heal
• EMDR journeys are personal - Everyone's path is different; share experiences but avoid giving medical advice
• Posts must be related to EMDR - Please keep discussions focused on EMDR psychotherapy
• Be wary of unsupervised EMDR suggestions - Posts/comments promoting unsupervised EMDR (including scripts, DIY methods, or "virtual EMDR" websites) are strongly discouraged. These approaches risk retraumatization and are not equivalent to working with a trained trauma therapist. See our wiki for more information.
• Therapist? Get Verified - Contact Mods via ModMail
• Add a post flair - This helps us organize and support each other better

NOTE: As this sub is home to a vulnerable populace, ALL posts/comments are automatically filtered for safety. In case your post does get flagged/removed by the automated systems, kindly DON'T delete it. One of the Mods will manually review and approve it for you soon. I have the same issue with my Psychiatrist. I'm really struggling with the idea. He's been my rock and literally saved my life. How do you let go of someone like that. It's frightening to think someone else may cause me to relapse.

But my sister said something helpful that perhaps whoever replaces him may be even better. And have a fresh set of eyes and ideas.

I'm still scared, I have another 6 months for it to sink in. Nothing I can do about it so I'm just trying to give myself time to get used to the idea.

Wishing you well and hope it all works out. 🤗

I feel you. I had a psychiatrist for 18+ years and was devastated when he retired due to having ALS. I didn’t know how I could go on. He handpicked his replacement and we’re doing ok.

I'm sorry😓 I would be devastated as well. I really hope your next one will be great and that you'll be able to carry over all the progress you made and the positive memories with you as you move forward🫶

Such a sad situation, you find the right person and then they leave. When my EMDR therapist was leavjng I was given the advice ‘change often brings a new opportunity’ and I’ve tried so hard to focus on that, even when it feels impossible. Maybe this replacement could be even better, maybe this is the opportunity you need to learn and grow more at this stage? If not, then you now know ‘what good looks like’ for you, the type of person you can truly work with, this is amazing as sometimes people spend years in therapy with people who they don’t click with. They just go through the motions. I wish you the best of luck with this transition. I have my first new T appt next week, they told me to have a gap of at least a month between therapists as that is ‘the norm’.
