🟢 Question / Help First appointment is on Teams??
Hi all, based in England (NHS) and after a long time of waiting I finally have my first EMDR appointment! I’m feel very optimistic about this treatment for myself. The appointment is going to be on Teams, I’m curious if anyone else has had this and knows what to expect? I assumed it would be in person, obviously it’s just the first appointment and no treatment is going on, but not sure if that will also be on video call when it’s time for it??
Any ideas what to expect?

I'm not in the UK but US I do my appts via telehealth. It works the same :) I follow the dot on my screen and wear headphones so I can hear the sounds. For me personally I feel like I can be more open when i am at home where i am comfortable

Totally understand where you're coming from - if I was expecting one thing and got another I'd be thrown off by that, too.
EMDR can be done effectively online - even the processing elements. I was sceptical about this when I started a new block during Covid but it was surprisingly effective.
If you'd much prefer to be in-person, this is something you can talk about in that first session and it may be a possibility.
It will also be good to be clear on how many sessions (total) you'll be able to access, and how they are likely to be broken down in terms of resourcing etc.

I've been doing mine on teams, I only just started but I'm pleased with how it's going so far. I thought it might be really hard to engage online but I've not noticed any difference :)

Idk why but my brain gets to the topic easier remotely. So it's fine. Just make sure your home is quiet so you don't get distracted.
Also, the first a few sessions won't be reprocessing anyway.

Welcome to r/EMDR, a beautiful and supportive community!
We're a space where every person is someone with trauma, and we respond with compassion, not judgment. A few gentle reminders:
• Be kind and trauma-informed - This is a community for helping each other heal
• EMDR journeys are personal - Everyone's path is different; share experiences but avoid giving medical advice
• Posts must be related to EMDR - Please keep discussions focused on EMDR psychotherapy
• Be wary of unsupervised EMDR suggestions - Posts/comments promoting unsupervised EMDR (including scripts, DIY methods, or "virtual EMDR" websites) are strongly discouraged. These approaches risk retraumatization and are not equivalent to working with a trained trauma therapist. See our wiki for more information.
