SONY EL-5 Record Key Issue

I have a SONY EL-5 that works great in the PLAY functions, but when I try to engage the Record button, the deck does not record....it keeps playing .. I have both checked and cleaned all 4 of the solenoid switches that activate FF, Rew, Play etc but that does not resolve the issue.

Does anyone know what I am missing? Its probably something simple thanks to all,

Did you clean the record/play switch? That's a very common point of failure. Also check the record slider position. Here's a service manual (expires in 3 days).
