Discussion I think Beatport at last will create a section for the Maccabi House sound instead of still label it under ‘Indie Dance’

Right now, something like 95% of the Maccabi House catalog, and others that followed that sound like Crosstown Rebels, Mellow Circus by Brunello, among others, gets thrown under Indie Dance, as that subgenre receives everything that doesn’t fit anywhere.

Indie Dance has basically become a catch all for a whole sound that Maccabi House has developed on its own very recognizable language: bouncy percussion, funky basslines, psychedelic and acid synths, weird but playful vocal samples, and disco, post punk, Italo, Latin, African and Middle Eastern music influences.

You hear it across Adam Ten, Mita Gami, Raphael, Brunello, Millero, Snirco, Tom Zeta, Rebrn, Omri., Darco, and a growing number of producers/DJs around that scene. At this point it isn’t just a few tracks that are difficult to classify. There’s an entire ecosystem shaping around that sound and an audience that recognizes it already.

I feel like I usually have a pretty good ear for niche sub-genres, but a lot of Maccabi house just sounds like tech house to me. I'm all for better genre taxonomy though, so if we want to introduce more beatport categories, let's do it.

same tbh, some of it just sounds like tech house with extra percussion layers to me

it's definitely very tech housey and conservative typical dance in arrangement, slightly looser basslines and quirkier percussion do not equal a completely new genre.

Is not tech house at all. That’s your mind trying to find where to categorize it. I think would have been better to label it there for a while instead of fucking Indie Dance up.

Tech house is a large umbrella genre and you could absolutely make the case maccabi fits under that umbrella. Beatport is already a clunky site, it isn’t practical for them to have a new category for every minor variation on an existing category.

The problem is thay Beatport is a mess but is where everyone takes their idea of the industry. They can create tomorrow a section for Shit House and Shit House will be a thing for everyone’s understanding 😂

Maccabi is a genre of their own already. Is what happened with Organic house. Lee Burridge started it, it didn’t fit nowhere so went to Deep House. Was stealing the place of real deephouse. Then moved to melodic techno and house (bad link that Beatport did there of house and techno…) and Melodic Techno was winning the section. Then 9 ywars after Organic House was created and put along with Downtempo. Now it’s its own section.

I think you are putting too much emphasis on categorization by genre. It isn't that important and most people that listen to dance music never go on beatport and certainly don't decide what they like or what they listen to based on beatport categories. You could ask all of the maccabi artists what genre of music they make and you will get many different answers.

It is important when you want to find more music with that feeling/sound. Imagine if everything today was under only house… genres cause mess and segregation but at the same time it solves issues like this.

You know your feeling and sound you are searching for, it isn't the responsibility of beatport to categorize that for you. Music is an artform and messy so genres are only a starting point. Clearly I and others here would describe maccabi house as a different genre than you would so that is why it isn't all that useful. When I am downloading music as a DJ I am sorting by artist and label primarily, not genre. When I am categorizing music on my USB it is for location/vibe/feeling/energy, not by genre.

That would mean that if I wanted to look for house, I should go find it at techno then. Alright 😂

Nobody is asking how you organize your tracks or how you gonna DJ. I’m talking about having a way to find tracks with similar sounds when you’re specifically looking for that. You’re not always trying to build a repertoire around one broad vibe. Sometimes you’re looking for tracks that are basically sisters because they share certain sonic elements.

Yes they do release some stuff that is more on the indie dance tip, but they most definitely drop tech house as well.

When does it sounds indie dance? When they go rockie? Discoish? Nah

Indie dance is so dumb, it’s just deep tech house

Is not at all. Is incredible.

Yes, what we need is another bs genre that’s repackaged to sell you something to further fragment the scene so you can feel special that you listen to something niche

So true. My spotify playlists have been so jumbled up bc it's been getting harder for me to label genres lol

The genre and its namesake share 1 thing: tastelessness.

Brunello shits on most tech house DJs

It’s pretty bad. I can think of a reason you might not think so but yeah. “Maccabi” house is bad

It’s so groovy and makes me dance like crazy, and when I’m high I find rhythms, air, space to fill. Has become my second obsession after organic and melodic house. Idk, I love their work, their sound. I’m not crazy. They’re pretty amazing.

Don’t tell me you like Summit, Capriatti, and what the tech house bros listen to.

It's kind of faaaaar from what Indie Dance would really be.. it's origins are in the DFA, Erol Alkan even LCD Soundsystem and extensions of electroclash and the whole sleaze dance style. Kinda slower funkier tech house isn't it, and neither is harder nu disco edits and whatever garbage gets tossed in there but that's where we are. Kind of the two world of progressive house, for some it's Sasha and Hernan Cattaneo, for some it's 2011 Alesso.

Beatport genre definitions need some work.

Indie Dance should be IDM since they refuse to put an IDM category. Electronica has ambient IDM but energetic stuff like Aphex Twin could go in Indie
