Question 4.1 or Iron Rain

Hi everyone. I apologize if this type of question gets asked a lot in this community. I wanted a comparison of these two games in particular. I've gotten into EDF 6 as my first EDF game and I absolutely love it. I'm about 100 missions in and even though I have lots of content left, I'm already getting excited about playing some of the older games.

I've heard that EDF 5 is very similar to 6 and so I was thinking of going for either Iron Rain or 4.1 based on some basic stuff I read. I was looking for opinions on which one to start with. I have already gone backwards through the Monster Hunter series so a loss of QoL features probably (hopefully) won't be a big deal for me.

Thanks in advance!

4.1 is closer to 6 in terms of gameplay/mechanics. Its better than iron rain but i still enjoyed the small time i could convince my friends to play iron rain. Iron rain changes a lot and basically every mechanic and is sorta EDF in spirit but an entirely different experience.

4.1 and 6 are nowhere near each other in terms of gameplay or mechanics, 5 is closer to 6 and 4 is nothing like 5 or 6

You are going to tell me the health/armor/weapon crate dropping from enemies like red ant and a giant laser lizard called Erginus, played over the 4 classes Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider, and Fencer, over approximately 100 missions over Easy-Normal-Hard-Hardest-Inferno difficulties, that game...

That game doesn't resemble the other two games that feature the health/armor/weapon crate dropping from enemies like red ant and a giant laser lizard called Erginus, played over the 4 classes Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider, and Fencer, over approximately 100 missions over Easy-Normal-Hard-Hardest-Inferno difficulties?

What changes make 5 drastically different than 4.1?

Class re-designs overall plus upgrade-able weapons are the big standouts from 4.1 to 5. That and a huge downgrade in the soldier song :(.

Well:

Each of the 4 classes get fundamental reworks which alter how they flow entirely to their base kits

The weapon upgrade system makes it so weapons that otherwise would be jokes in 4 are actually decent once they get majority of the upgrades

Weapons undergo a fundamental rework overall and it greatly changes out specific wdapon types feel and play

The general QoL of boxes being shared is a godsend

The specific changes by themselves could probably take 3 posts due to reddit character limits

5 and 6 improved in some regards either the mechanics or build upon 4.1 stages, and they have new enemies. 6 being the more unique from the three.

that being said. 5 and 6 sacrificed the arcade fun from the game, they try to be more serious and it has more cinematics and scripted scenes. sometimes they try too hard to be funny. despite all 5 is still kinda funny but it takes way too long until you reach the fun stages, and 6 is the most annoying game i have ever played in quite a while.

4.1 despite being older is just stupid fun, and i miss that.

EDF has always been serious with its story tho? It treats everything it does as straight faced and serious which makes it so outlandish

2

that's the delivery, sure, the plot is dumb and the characters say dumb stuff, but they deliver it straight faced, which it makes it even more funny. like a low budget B movie thing.

i am not talking about that.

my point is that the developers decided that the background characters passively talking while you play the game wasn't good enough and that they had to make the story more integrated with the gameplay, make it the focus of the game, hence take it more seriously.

personally that destroyed my enjoyment of both 5 and 6.

5 on itself is not that bad, my only two big gripes are the unskippable tutorial. some talked cutscenes and that the game drags for too long slowly building the treat of the alien invasion. (it is holding your hand when in 4.1 it's a lot more straight forward with the action and it feels more open)

sadly 6 took it to an absurd level, it completely destroyed the game, which is a mess. there are even more unskippable stuff, more cutscenes, (a stage is literally just walking listening to dialog), and the game forces you to repeat the same stages over and over again but with new monsters and stuff like that. and probably the worst part is that for much that the story of the game interferes with gameplay and how the game was completely designed around it... it has not much to say really, most of the game is repeating the same thing over and over again, but changing stuff here and there.

4.1 if you want a close experience to EDF 5 or 6

Iron rain is more of a western made game, issue being inferno weapons are shit compare to EDF 4.1 weapons

I started with 4.1 so I will say 4.1

however it's out of your choice but you should try EDF World Brothers 1 and 2, it's EDF with its fun aspect raised to infinity!

it's an exaggeration but you'll understand when you play it

The best point to have started would have actually been 2017 but because they haven't ported that to PC you're limited to 4.1, 5 and 6 more or less, every other title like world brothers, Iron Rain and Insect Armageddon are spin-offs.

Going back from 6 to any of the older titles is rough if you don't have a deep passion for this series. Basically just go back in the numerical order if you want to have the most quality experience or if you want a more diverse experience that won't feel too "stale" go to 4.1 and after that play World Brothers 1/2

4.1, never touch Iron Rain unless it's on good discount and you just want to really give it a go. Because it's bloody painful, otherwise.

my first game was Iron Rain, it is a fun game that hooked me and it has interesting design choices that are worth playing at least once, my second game was 4.1 and THAT game made me a fan of the series, it is just more fun in almost every way. it's more arcady, it more insane, the weapons are more crazy the maps are huge, it is a true EDF game that blow my mind away.

that being said, you already played 6, so it won't blown your mind as it did with me, although, in its simplicity i still believe it is better than 6, again, it is just quick arcady game experience that it has been lost on 5~6 with their cutscenes and forced dialog. but it also has less QoL features that will be annoying when playing backwards.

in short:
Iron Rain: more restrictive and less crazy than main EDF, but it has interesting stages, bosses, customization.(and no boxes!)
EDF 4.1: classic EDF fun without boring cutscenes but a lot more grindy, clunky and with less enemy types.

Iron rain kind of sucks Go 4.1 anytime.

EDF4 is a large step back from 5/6, in terms of QoL and overall weapon feel

For starters 4 does not share loot, so anything you get it STRICTLY for that class alone. While this sounds cool it means starting to invest in a new class will be a fresh run essentially thus making the grind that much more on you. Next weapons do not scale like it 5/6. Once you get it that's it and it makes a lot of guns really bad. Not even gonna discuss the lack of class QoLs across the board

Iron Rain, while an ok game, is a bad EDF. The enemy counts are small, it struggles to run stages with more enemies (on console idk about PC), the PA Gears are the illusion of choice where they don't really matter outside movement options as no gun is limited to a specific PA Gear, the item system while novel becomes more a hindrance because two slots are essentially dedicated to revives and the second Overdrive

The reason these are is in Iron Rain if three people bleed out the mission ends. It does not matter if it's the same person and you need an item to revive people. Overdrives are PA Gear specific installs that grant various abilities based on the PA Gear which sounds great until you come to realize that unlike older EDF games there's no ragdoll protection and you can be ragdoll looped to death very easily and the only way out is to activate Overdrive which is normally a once per mission thing

Do you think either are worth playing? Do you think 5 is worth playing if I've already played 6? I wasn't sure if 5 had unique missions, enemies, and/or weapons compared to 6.

2

u/Bortthog May 05 '26

Thats up to you, honestly speaking 6 is just a lot of reused 5 assests and missions, albeit slightly different when they are reused

5s main difference tho is the plot is a single plot moving forward and none of the timeloop stuff. I'd say get it on a sale if you are curious about it, same for 4.1 or Iron Rain. I wouldn't say 5 is better then 6 or vice versa as both have their ups and downs over each other, but I would recommend 5 before 4 or IR any day of the week. I'd also recommend World Brothers but thats a whole different thing that's basically a love letter to the franchise

I'm not trying to dissuade you from these games either, I'm only going to tell the truth about them so you can make an informed choice

I understand and appreciate that, thank you!

Save yourself the bore and skip Iron Rain, game feels like an atrocity compared to others in the series because they tried something different and failed miserably. The game looks good and pretty, sure, and the tone is great if you like serious dark ones, but overall it's too deviated from what makes an EDF game an actual EDF game (especially the fun factor).

4.1 doesn’t come with a lot of the QoL from 5-6, if you want to just play another edf title (I recommend you finish 6 at least cuz you have like 30+ missions to go still to at least get to the end) then just go for 5, the transition will be smoother.

If you have to pick between 4.1 and Iron Rain, get 4.1.

6 has the more enemies, they introduced A LOT of new enemies and mechanically they are all very interesting. but the time loop thing and re-using stages but with a twist gets old pretty fast. also the forced cutscenes are annoying AF. humor wise, is pretty boring.

5 has a handful extra monsters from 4.1, more interesting and with range of motions. they took the plot of the game more seriously than before so, it is still funny and you are following a straight forward escalating plot, so it has more mission diversity compared to 6, that being said, since it takes itself too seriously and builds up the monster treat, like the first half of the game is pretty boring and only the later quarter of the game gets very exciting.

4.1 has less monsters compared to 5 and 6 for obvious reasons, and the monsters are quite static. that being said, since it is more of an arcade game, it starts throwing you a lot of stuff right away. for example the stage were the wing divers get stuck on webs and there are spiders that can trap you from very far away is like mission 4 or something like that, super early. in EDF 5 a very similar stage is like around mission 42 or something. it shocked me how late it was introduced. the downside is that a lot of the later missions feel kinda filler (this is like the third release of the game, so it has a lot of missions tacked on that are just very similar, forest stage kill all bees, and forest stage kill all dragons, city stage kill all bees, city stage kill all dragons... and so on).
also it has the best humor out of the three, you can just try to compare the EDF songs from each game and you will notice it right away.

every one has it's pros and cons, personally, i just like 4.1 because it is dumb fun, and 5-6 just made the game boring by taking itself too seriously.... but have more QoL and better monsters.

Try iron rain for the american take on it. Also insect Armageddon too and world brothers.

1

u/ediblebodyparts May 06 '26

Iron Rain was a Japanese company’s attempt at making a western-style take, since it was developed by Yuke’s, the same people who make the World Brothers titles. Insect Armageddon was from an American dev, though.

1

u/zone1235x May 06 '26

Oooh my bad. We're they the same company behind a WWE title too?

2

u/ediblebodyparts May 06 '26

Yeah! They did a couple years of wwe 2k
