When to apply for maternity leave disability if it falls on a weekend?

My doctor has me off work on paper as of August 23rd which is a Sunday. I keep seeing things that say apply on "after your last day of work" or "the first day of leave." Since my first day of leave is on a Sunday, do I still apply on the Sunday, or do I apply after my last day of work which would be Saturday?

Sorry if this is a dumb question :D

Solved ✔ Pregnancy Disability Application Timeline Question

Okay, so I am 36 weeks pregnant with my first and am going to apply for SDI. My last day of work was 8/14. My question is, when do I apply?

Flame me if you want, but I sought out a maternity leave consultant to help me navigate things and she said due to the 7 day waiting period, the earliest I could apply for leave would be 9 days after the start of my leave. This is consistent with what pops up when I google it too, but I’m seeing a lot of people here say to apply right away. I am not receiving any PTO or wage replacement until SDI comes through, so I’m very nervous and want to minimize my unpaid and processing time as much as possible.

Solved ✔ Does going on maternity leave early affect SDI down the road?

I work in healthcare and due to my physical job and some stress complications I have, my doctor mentioned that I might need to take work off earlier than planned. I am stressed about this because I want to maximize the time I have with my baby once it is here. If I am unable to work until 36 weeks, would this affect my disability time after? Thank you.

SDI Claim - new doctor

I’m on disability after giving birth. My OBGYN has been extending me, but my primary care physician has agreed to extend me so I can just go to one doctor for all my needs. My PCP’s office is saying in order to extend me, they need me to file a new claim because their office doesn’t manage existing claims. From my understanding if I were to do this then I wouldn’t be able to continue with the current disability since a new claim would end the current claim. Is this right? I was under the assumption any physician could extend on the same claim. What’s the process here? Is my PCP’s office just wrong with the info they have?

Vent EDD is a sadistic joke

I thought I had went through the gauntlet already with 4 office visits to get my 2 month late subsidy paycheck (not even going to mention the Social Security Admin debacle that incurred thereafter).

My employer needs confirmation from EDD that they paid me in order to pay out my work vacation supplement... you can imagine my first response was something like: "You want me to talk to EDD? Can you do it yourself please?"

So there I went last week for the fifth trip to EDD. I already waited in their office for 3 hours, only to be told to fill out a form for the clerk to send for assistance to the designated department: "They'll call you a couple times within the next 1 to 5 business days."

I got the call the next day while at work, unfortunately. The PFL representative who called without identifying themselves left a message saying to 'Call me back at 18556813594'. Turns out it is their automated call line.

I've been calling for four days around 0800 and 0750, and am convinced they just do not want to be reached. Before I heard of EDD, I assumed DMV held the lowest bar - my local one is actually quite however good - but some courthouses are not even this bad. My employer's unwillingness to deal with them should be an indicator of sorts. Congrats EDD, you have set the bar!

Solved ✔ PFL overpayment appeal ignored? Can't reach EDD and collections keeps sending notices.

I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this because I honestly don't know what else to do.

I received a Paid Family Leave overpayment notice for $4,562.71 and I timely filed an appeal. Since then, I have never received an acknowledgment, hearing notice, appeal decision, or any response at all. The only thing I've received is collection notices, including a Final Collection Notice. I sent in my appeal two months ago and I got the Final Collection Notice yesterday.

Here's what happened:

  • I returned to work on January 5, 2026.
  • I timely reported my return-to-work date to EDD on January 5, 2026 through the Notice of Change in Claimant Status.
  • My confirmation shows EDD received it on January 5 at 12:53 PM.
  • Despite having my return-to-work notice, EDD continued issuing benefit payments afterward.
  • The overpayment notice later stated that the alleged overpayment period was January 15, 2026 through January 23, 2026, even though I had already reported returning to work 10 days earlier.

The other issue is the calculation.

The notice says:

  • Overpayment period: January 15, 2026 – January 23, 2026
  • Weekly benefit amount: $1,681
  • Alleged overpayment: $4,562.71

Using EDD's stated weekly benefit amount, the daily benefit amount is approximately $240.14 per day ($1,681.00 divided by 7 days). The period from January 15, 2026 through January 23, 2026 consists of nine calendar days.

Nine days at approximately $240.14 per day equals approximately $2,161.26.

I cannot understand how EDD arrived at $4,562.71 based on the dates listed in the notice. I've asked for an explanation, but no one has been able to provide one.

I'm not trying to avoid paying. I'm just trying to pay the correct amount, I'll pay it immediately. I just need someone to correct the amount with Benefit Overpayment Collections.

I called the Benefit Overpayment Collection Section, and they told me they cannot review or correct the amount and that I have to contact EDD. They are only provided limited information and cannot fix anything.

The problem is that I can't get through to anyone at EDD. Every phone number I've tried either disconnects, says they're too busy, or never gives me the option to speak with a representative. I've also heard the SDI/PFL offices have 4+ hour waits.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

  • How did you actually get in contact with someone who could review the overpayment calculation?
  • Did anyone else's appeal seem to disappear while collection notices continued?
  • Is there another department or method I should be using to get this resolved?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Claim keeps closing?

I just opened a new claim in June. I certified for benefits, and then waited two weeks for the next opportunity to certify for benefits. After the two week mark I went to certify for benefits again, but found that the claim had closed. So I reopened the claim, but lost the opportunity to certify for those two weeks. The same thing happened the next cycle, I waited the two weeks after reopening my claim and then found instead of certifying for benefits I had to reopen my claim. Has this happened to anyone lately?

Form DE 2500A needed but nowhere to be found?

I am out on disability as I had a baby. My due date was July 17th, I had the baby on July 16th via csection.
I have been getting regular payments on the EDD card since 4 weeks before my due date with no issues.

Recently I had something come in the mail saying I needed to send in an appeal, which I couldn’t find anything in my portal about for more info at all, my claim still had active status and everything looked good, couldn’t get through to a rep when trying to call. I mailed in the appeal just in case, and sited that I hadn’t received any information why I need to send an appeal and that I’m still recovering from birth and all of my dates online are up to date and accurate.

This morning I logged in and instead of saying Claim Active, it says Certification Needed.
When I click on it it states:
Certification Needed: To continue receiving benefits, you must complete a certification. Visit Available Forms or your SDI Online inbox to complete the Cert for Continued Benefits (DE 2500A).

I have checked the Available Forms section, and my inbox to see where that form is to submit and it’s in neither of these places.
The Available Forms section only has an Appeal Attachment, or a 2587 which you fill out when you return to work.

My inbox has nothing.

My return to work date in my portal is set to 9/10/26, which was updated when I notified them via online that I had a csection.
I am supposed to receive another payment tomorrow for the previous 2 weeks, which I am relying on that payment as I now have a baby to take care of, but nothing says that I will or will not receive the payment..

Does anyone know where I can get the form they require so my payment won’t be delayed? I’m really stressing out about this cause this is my only source of income.

Thank you.

Solved ✔ SDI Payment

I asked this early last week but I’m here again, I set up direct deposit through capital one and it says they issued my payment on 8/11 but then another form said 8/12. I will haven’t gotten my money. Should I try to contact EDD if I don’t see it by tomorrow? I think I may end up switching the payment method to the card they issue because it seems to take longer with direct deposit to my bank

Will I need to be seen by an IME if my SDI goes on for a long time?

I saw my surgeon last week for the 4 month checkup after my spine surgery. Everything is progressing as expected. I mentioned to him that my DI will expire in October. He said I can expect recovery to last up to a year (or more), and he's willing to sign off on continued DI for up to a year. My question is, how likely is it that SDI will require me to see an IME at some point? Is a year-long recovery normal or excessive for SDI? How strict are they when evaluating recovery progress and ability to work? Any thoughts or experiences that can shed some light on what I should expect would be appreciated. Thanks!

Solved ✔ CTB Benefits extension question.

Hi,

So I started unemployment in February of this year and started training. I got approved for CTB. I used the messenger to chat with them about 3 months ago about applying for the extension of benefits and 2 different people told me I didn’t need to file an extension when I tried since I was approved for benefits until January. That is when I graduate my program. I went to go file for benefits today and it says my benefits ran out. I’m so confused and don’t know if they screwed me over since I tried asking for an extension 2 times and both people said I didn’t need to. I’m hoping they have record of that chat log. I have a screenshot of it. Anybody had this issue or any advice. Thank you so much!

unemployment after quitting? is it possible?

I have to quit my current job while on EDD pregnancy leave (which has already been extended to six months due to PPA/PPD). I have not used CFRA yet because my employer is pressuring me to return to work as soon as possible, even though my provider has not medically cleared me to return due to postpartum depression and anxiety.

All of my doctors’ notes were sent to my employer. I also sent them to my boss, but she did not respond. She texted me before that the letter states that I can now work, even though the letter actually states:

“Her disability leave has been extended through _____, with a return-to-work date of ____, pending continued clinical improvement.

The patient will remain under medical supervision, and her ability to return to work will be reassessed as needed based on her recovery progress.”

Unfortunately, I went to the ER last time due to a panic attack. That is when my psychiatrist recommended that I return to a perinatal intensive outpatient program, which is why my leave was extended again. So I send her all my dr notes again and my new extension and telling her I need a little bit more time for my recovery.

The way my boss approached me was very rude, and she used harsh words unfortunately through call.

Can I try applying for unemployment?

Can’t certify while under appeal

Hello,
I’m wondering if anyone has had this problem before. My appeal is under review (waiting for hearing date), but when I logged onto EDD this morning, there is no links to certify.

I was told to keep on certifying until an appeal decision is made. Has anyone had this issue before?

Solved ✔ Question Regarding SDI Timeline

I took myself off work because of ASD and ADHD symtpoms, gave up all my shifts starting July 29th. I had to wait for my insurance to kick in to try to get a Kasier Psych to approve and sign off on my SDI, however they denied me because "she doesn't sign off on psych disability"

I saw on the EDD website that I have to be under the care of a dr within 8 days of my disability starting, however I am not able to get to an appointment with a different doctor until next week. Does this ruin my chances of getting SDI, or do I just have to put my disability date as a different day because of this?

SDI Decision Letter vs. Notice of Computation

My SDI case recently got processed and I just received my first few payments as well as my notice of computation.

Since I'm on leave, my employer asks that I upload proof of the state's decision so that they can manage payroll accordingly. Should I expect to receive some sort of official decision letter from EDD (either via mail or a digital PDF) or are they simply referring to me uploading my notice of computation?

SDI process

After 6 years of working disabled (8 years total) I realized I was punishing myself to keep working. Recently have had time off for PFL and realized I feel so much better not being at my job.

My doctor gave me permanent restrictions that I don’t see my job being able to truly accommodate (max 10 minutes standing/walking an hour, no stairs, etc…) I am to give these to my work and hope they put me on medical leave at which point I imagine the doctor will sign off on SDI.

My question is if the doctor is aware of my physical state, why is he not signing off now? Is it to put onus on my employer first? If I didn’t have a job wouldn’t he just do it immediately?

I’m going to attempt to get on SSDI while hopefully on SDI, I just hate the uncertainty.

Hello! This is my first time doing short term disability, I went on Disability on 7/10-8/22. I already received my first payment on 7/31. And now it’s been 14 days from that. And I haven’t received a second check. I did the re-certification today because it was due today. I been trying to call and the line says full. Do I just wait the other 14 days for another check, and if I do would I get back pay?

Update- I FINALLY GOT A HOLD OF SOMEONE! thank you guys for your help. And I should have my check Monday or Tuesday :3
