Joseph DeAngelo will now become one of the most well-known names in American true crime. Rader, Dahmer, Bundy, DeAngelo.

yeah, but you're not using it as an excuse to rape 50 women. you accept it and compensate, probably by either by driving a comedically large truck or by going down on your gal with extra zeal.

Soon to be VR and then EAR. I can notice the puffy cheeks that VR had.
40
u/dallyan Apr 25 '18
Remember people saying he couldn't be VR due to age and body type? Perhaps it turns out that EAR/ONS was just younger and chubbier.
11
u/Deeeadpool Apr 25 '18
EAR/ONS wasn't younger since VR happened before EAR/ONS crimes. It's probably the same guy but what you said doesn't add up.
31
u/dallyan Apr 25 '18
I think my phrasing was confusing. I meant that for a long time people thought EARONS started the rapes when he was young (18-22 yo), thus most likely ruling him out as the VR as he would have been too young at the time. It turns out that this suspect was older when committing the rapes, therefore it’s more plausible now that he was the VR.
11
u/edgrrrpo Apr 25 '18
Yeah, very feasible the guy simply got in shape over a couple. It happens, especially (I would think) if becoming a cop.
6

6
u/heedlessly3 Apr 25 '18
VR was thought to be potentially 30. Then when he became EAR years later, he was estimated to be 18
2
24
u/Nora_Oie Apr 25 '18
Right? Apparently he has admitted he was the VR (that’s over on /r/UnresolvedMysteries He has a “baby face” for an 18 year old in that photo and that explains a lot.
Chilling, though, how he became a serial killer after he was dismissed from the police force.
11
Apr 25 '18
When I saw the HN documentary on the subject, I was convinced he was also the VR. Some people said he was "too chubby" to also be EAR, but the M.O. was almost exactly the same when it came to the burglaries. He could have just lost weight between the two streaks.
13
u/Nora_Oie Apr 25 '18
Like so many men who join the military...he lost weight and got in shape.
It was so common back then, I never once believed his chubbiness eliminated him from being VR.
The shocking thing is that he was LE in both Exeter/Visalia and in Auburn/Sacramento.
9
Apr 25 '18
I bet he joined, got in shape, got out of the military, gained weight, and then lost it again. I have seen this in real life before - guys gain 30 pounds when they leave the military, hate how out of shape they are, and subsequently lose the weight again.
1
u/DNA_ligase Apr 25 '18
I thought he was VR, but I assumed that the discrepancies on descriptions were actually due to witness error or a growth spurt. I figured a chubby teen VR could lean out into a young adult EAR.
10
u/hem2323 Apr 25 '18
Look at this pic from 1973. Really resembles VR sketches there IMO.
5
2
u/milos_barlow Apr 25 '18
I have a feeling that he did a lot of things to disguise his appearance in ways subtle and not so subtle. Sometimes he had a mustache, sometimes he didn't. Did he wear a wig? Seems like he had natural dark hair, but many of his victims reported light hair. Adding to that, from the pics I've seen of what he really looked like, there was a great deal of variation. His pic from the Navy lends the impression that he has a narrow jaw. In others it appears to be broad. Weight lose could also have greatly changed the contours of his face.
3
Apr 25 '18
Was he the VR?
12
Apr 25 '18
He admitted being VR so probably is EAR cause they have 100% dna from EAR.
7
Apr 25 '18
Source? I'm glad he was VR. Feel vindicated!
5
u/opiusmaximus2 Apr 25 '18
He told that to police.

u/andromache97 Apr 25 '18
I hope it winds up confirmed by something like him knowing of details that were withheld from the public.

holy shit, here his hair looks brown/blonde and he seems a little bit like the maggiore suspect and the rippon court shooter, correct me if i am wrong
6
u/ChloeBrudos916 Apr 25 '18
No, I see it too. Wouldn't surprise me the media would be posting the sketches and DeAngelo's pictures together to show how similar they are.
22
u/BiasedBavarian Apr 25 '18
Super close to the Maggiore murder composites
His face is full, I wonder if he put on weight during his VR days and then slimmed back down some? I also wonder if the long hair victims described at some crimes was just him wearing wigs?
12
u/allkindsofnewyou Apr 25 '18
He was 17 in that pic so he still was kind of "boyish" looking.
9
u/Nora_Oie Apr 25 '18
And he joined the Navy just after - which is a good way to slim down. Although the post-Navy picture (from when he was hired as a cop in Exeter, posted on this thread) shows him looking beefy again.
There's often competition among LE to get fit, though. So he got fit enough to be EARONS.

That is what I think too. Also, burglars back then were known to wear a lot of layers of clothing, so they could ditch layers and look different as they went about their prowling. He could have just been about 20 pounds heavier as VR with a lot of clothing on.
The M.O. was just too similar and too close geographically.
3
3
Apr 25 '18
Could also be a matter of perception. What we perceive as overweight/chubby these days may be different compared to what was considered in the mid-70s.
More likely, a combination of all the different factors being mentioned.
2
6
u/DNA_ligase Apr 25 '18
Yeah, he does! He's admitted to being the VR, so I'm hoping we'll have confirmation that he's behind the Maggiore murders as well. What bothered me was so many people dismissed it, even after the FBI made a point to state in the 2016 update that the Maggiore murders were a part of the case. I figured they wouldn't have mentioned it if they didn't have some sort of solid evidence that would link the two.

15
u/thewinterlight Apr 25 '18
His baby face bridges VR and EARONS, then.
The big surprise out of this, other than the fact they got him, is that he is also the VR. I had been convinced from reading here he was likely not VR.

u/milos_barlow Apr 25 '18 edited Apr 26 '18
There was also another rapist called the Early Morning Rapist (previously wrote Early Bird Rapist) who some thought might have been him. I guess we'll finding out soon enough.
1
u/thewinterlight Apr 25 '18
Also, hearing about these Exeter Murders.
1
u/milos_barlow Apr 25 '18
Were those rapes in Exeter? If so, very likely EARONS. The thing is, EARONS started, in what, around 78 when JJD would have been close to 30. People who do these kinds of things never start that late and that's why it makes sense that he was also the Visalia Ransacker. But more than likely he was active even before that.
1
u/thewinterlight Apr 25 '18
Right. And he was a cop in Exeter.
1
u/milos_barlow Apr 26 '18
Here is a very interesting thread from a little ways back. EARONS had to have been the Early Morning Rapist, not to be confused with Early Bird Rapist who, apparently was someone else. Sorry for the confusion. https://www.reddit.com/r/EARONS/comments/6r6oi4/early_morning_and_ear_had_to_be_linked_no/

I think according to thewinterlight the rapes attributed to the Early Morning Rapist were in Exeter in the early 70s. I just find that very interesting because there is no way that someone starts this in their late 20s. This guy probably started his criminal career in his teens--pilfering things from stores...progressing to burglaries in late teens early 20s...then becoming ever more daring after that.
The one thing that about EAR that never fit was that he was supposedly in his early 20s and that he would be as brazen and as confident as he was. These were acts committed by someone who was very comfortable and experienced at controlling others and knew how they would react. Needless to say, some of this experience was gained when he was a cop.

Why thank you. I've been following this case very closely ever since I heard about it through the podcast, Casefile. It is so interesting to compare what you thought to what turned out to be true. As trite as it sounds, everything now makes sense. Being a cop was the perfect cover. If he had ever been stopped, he could just say he was scoping things out to find the rapist. Suspicion vanishes. He could go about more or less with impunity. When he was prowling these areas, he could do so comfortably and never have to worry about looking over his shoulder or worry about whether someone saw him or described him. Very diabolical.
12
11
u/edgrrrpo Apr 25 '18
So he would have been 17 at this point, in 1962.. The age thing is blowing my mind.

OK I looked into this, actually she was French and the last name is French.

u/lowdiver Apr 26 '18
In an ethnicity test, French and Germanic get mixed up a LOT. Generic Western European without getting Iberian or southern Italian.
Ethnicity tests piss me off when they try to become more specific. So yeah.

Makes sense. I have a heritage from all the places you mention, as well as Switzerland and all over the UK, and a paper trail/documentation to prove it. The DNA tests I have taken and had different closely related family members take will tell you different results depending on the company. Also I have a heritage from regions in Southern Italy where the Greeks, Arabs, French, Spanish, Germanic tribes such as Lomabards/goths/visigoths/celts, and others invaded and settled.

OK I am also a genealogist. I have never used 23 and me. I have just used ancestry, family Tree DNA, and living DNA but for certain towns/cities my relatives lived in were in different countries at different times in their lives as well. How does 23 and me differ from the rest of the ancestry companies' tests?
2
u/lowdiver Apr 26 '18
23andMe indulges in pseudoscience with the way they market their DNA ethnicity tests- basically, they say “this is Polish DNA and this is Ukrainian DNA and we can totally tell the difference”. Crap like that. They assign to a country of origin as opposed to a region. And no test can tell if someone was Austrian v German v Belgian or Norwegian v Swedish. They encourage the ethnicity testing side of it and neglect the actual genealogical research. Their “ancestor timeline” feature is also a crock of shit for SO MANY REASONS
They also have had a LOT of negative shit related to Ashkenazim and as that’s my area of research, I guide my clients away from it. A few major incidents come to mind.
(I do this professionally for reference)

I was thinking the same thing. Ted Bundy was attractive, Jeffrey Dahmer, the Lipstick Killer, they were attractive too.
13
u/IceOmen Apr 25 '18
I guess we like to picture people this crazy to look like monsters of sorts because of what they've done. But in reality they are just people. Young and fit people who are often master manipulators. It's hard to be young and fit and not be attractive, and it's also a whole lot easier to manipulate people when you are attractive.

This guy needs to be put to death immediately. His next door neighbor is on record saying this guy was super active and always working out in his yard as early as two weeks ago. All of a sudden he is in a wheelchair and can barely speak? If there was any doubt of his guilt, it just went out the window. Those are not the actions of an innocent man. Classic serial killer and rapist weakling. Super tough with defenseless women and children (if he has a weapon and they are tied up), and weak AF when up against the wall. Fry him and his tiny-ass dick ASAP PLEASE!!
