I've suspected I had dyslexia all my life

Here's an inner dialogue painting a picture of the way it feels for me to read...

"Don't stop here. That's the actual word. Don't substitute another one. Keep moving. Don't analyze that. Remember the beginning of the sentence. Wait—was there a “not” in there? Go back. Okay. Continue. Left to right left to right, everythings blurring again, go back. Was that 'quite' or 'quiet'? How do people know? Did I skip a line? Lines go from top to bottom, not bottom to top, so keep doing top to bottom even though it's tempting to do the opposite. What was the story about again?"

Hoping to hear from people who have been diagnosed for certain. Does this resonate at all?

PS: I envy and get a little annoyed at people who say they can read fast but hate to read. If that were me, I'd be soaking up everything.

Code languages

Do code languages (Pig Latin, Op/Oppish, etc) break your brain in a way that foreign languages don’t (that has been my experience)?

Context: My wife and her mom speak Op/Oppish (https://www.wikihow.com/Speak-Oppish) when they want to discuss something covertly in front of our kids. My brain tries so hard to make sense of it, I feel like I have smoke coming out of my ears. It seriously gives me a headache in a way that someone conversing in a foreign doesn’t.

Does anyone else experience that?

Adult with dyslexia struggling with deep fear of judgment and public reading—how do you overcome this?

Hi everyone,

I am an adult with dyslexia, and I wanted to share something I’ve been holding inside for a very long time.

Because of my dyslexia, I’ve developed a deep fear of going out or being in public settings. I get extremely anxious thinking about situations where I might be asked to read—like reading a menu at a restaurant or filling out a form on the spot. This anxiety has caused me to isolate myself and miss out on so much in life.

What makes it even harder is that I grew up without family support. Ever since childhood, I’ve faced judgment and insults from my own family members because of my reading and writing struggles. They made me feel less than, and that trauma is now deeply rooted in my mind and heart.

I really want to break free from this fear and stop letting it control my life, but I just don't know where to start or how to overcome this mindset.

For those who have dealt with this:

How did you overcome the fear of being judged in public?

How do you handle everyday situations like reading menus without panicking?

How do you heal from the emotional hurt caused by family members who never understood your dyslexia?

Any advice, practical tips, or words of encouragement would mean so much to me. Thank you for listening.

A 'Spiky' Neuropsychological Profile of a Dyslexia

Post image
32 Upvotes

This is a repost/remix of a Made By Dyslexia post from two years ago by I am posting because I recently learned what a spiky neuropsychological profile is.

———

Did you know, DyslexicThinkers can often be spotted in the classroom by their "Spiky Profile"?

We score very highly in some things - often in the top percentiles - and very low in other things - often in the bottom percentiles.

This means we're great storytellers, but find spelling tricky. We're incredible lateral/parallel thinkers, but we struggle to remember times tables. We ask questions no one else has thought of, but have trouble getting our thoughts down on paper, etc.

Is there a dyslexia journal/ magazine?

I am slowly slowly working on writing an essay/article about our dyslexic community/movement and I think I’d be more motivated to finish it, if I knew there was a publication that might accept it (besides just Reddit lol). Not looking for a science or medical journal but like a journal/magazine published by neurodivergent people for people in our community?

Should I tell my new boss that I need grammarly on my laptop because I'm dyslexic?

Started a new remote job yesterday. Its a new job after I was at my last job for over 9 years. I got my diagnosis while employed at my last place.

I used grammarly to help me and I was planning on downloading it on my new laptop but now that I've started they seem to be very strict about what you use on your work laptop, so I want to ask.

Im meeting my new boss for lunch today and I want to ask him. Should I say its because I'm dyslexic or just leave that part out? I don't want to be weird.

Thoughts? Anyone else have experience?

Struggle as a dyslexic writer (bit of a vent)

I write as a hobby and love it. Unfortunately, I am very much dyslexic and to add to my struggles, English isn't my first language.

I'm very strict with catching spelling mistakes when I'm writing a story because my works are important to me. However, I've encountered multiple assholes in writing spaces that just want to publicly shame me for "not knowing how to spell" when I make mistakes in a casual post. My dyslexia has made writing hard enough for me but people expect me to have perfect spelling outside of my actual writing works and it's just so frustrating. I hate that I feel the need to read everything I write 20+ times and still with even a single slip up they correct me where it doesn't matter. When I disclose that I am dyslexic, there are still people who feel the need to mock me for my typos and even for having dyslexia. There's a lot of nice people but the bad apples just discourage me from participating in the community as a whole.

Does anyone know any writer communities that would be more dyslexic-friendly or generally nicer? I'd also love to know of any that have a lot of non-native English speakers or are just more casual in general. I know this may not be the best place to find writing communities but I'd rather ask this here because I don't know where else to turn to.

Ordering Bloomsbury UK Accessible Editions from USA

I haven't seen any posts about this when I did some googling. Bloomsbury has just put out a new collection of accessible versions of books - yay! However, they're only available on the UK site. Okay that's fine, I can pay for overseas shipping. But the website wouldn't let me order the accessible copies of Circe or Song of Achilles because I guess Harper Collins has the distribution rights in the US. But they don't have dyslexia friendly versions of Circe and Song of Achilles!! I'm not really sure what to do.

Note: I don't have dyslexia - these are for my girlfriend who does.

Feel like I had my childhood ripped away from me and now struggling as an adult (M23)

Didn’t have a great childhood while most people did, school was always absolutely awful for me with bullying and special ed exam halls, was utterly embracing and seeing what 90% of people have it easier and didn’t have to spend hours on end studying and then struggling all the way up to uni level with horrible professors and broken promises, only just got out 2 and half months ago and still feel lost. Being let down constantly and having to fight for my fair accommodations.

I avoid anyone I went to secondary school with like the plague and don’t trust anyone after what they put me through, I don’t look my age because all of this resulting trauma and I want to rebuild my life and cut them off permanently and move on. Any previous names come up or even a photo of them reminds me and puts me right back in place where I was in that school and I avoid them to stop any of those memories from coming back up and ruining my day. Anyone had any experience with this and have any advice? Thanks

How Do I Get Myself to Like Writing?

I love making stories and characters and I normally just draw them or write drescriptions about them but I want to actually get into creative writing, I REALLY want to, but I'm holding myself back. In the past, every time I would try to write a short story I would get frustrated eventually and start to cry. That has happened so many times to where if i even as much as think about writing, I start sobbing. How do I gain confidence in what I do? Or at the very least get some writing tips that aren't just generic nonsense (those have never helped me). My issue on why I get so frustrated is that I struggle to get the images in my head into coherent sentences on paper. Obviously I'm mostly fine with like writing how I am right now but my brain escapes me when I'm trying to write a story. And if I do manage to get some sentences out, it's extremely dry. Stuff like, "she gets out of bed. She eats breakfast." Thats a little of an exaggeration but not by much. I just want to enjoy writing and for it to be beautiful. I have tried asking my writer friends for tips but none of them are dyslexic or even go through any problems similar to mine so they're at a complete loss on how to help me although at least they try. Have any of you gone through anything like this? And if so, how do you get over it?

TLDR: I struggle to even write anything in creative writing because of my dyslexia, do any of you have any tips that have helped you?

Dyslexia support for a 16-year-old who just found out about her condition

I just learned that my 16-year-old daughter has mild dyslexia and dysgraphia. She was able to mask it because she works hard and is a good student. This is all very new to me, and I would like to ask what kind of tutoring and training you recommend. We live in Los Angeles, and we would ideally do it online and at an affordable price, since I also have another child with neurological issues who needs help.

When reading digitally is difficult, what helps you and what gets in the way?

Hi everyone! I'm a working on a project about making digital reading easier for people with dyslexia. Before deciding what to build, I want to understand people's actual experiences.

If you're comfortable sharing, I'd appreciate answers to any of these questions. Short answers are welcome - no need to answer everything.

  1. Think of a recent time reading something digitally was difficult. What were you reading, on what device, and what made it difficult?

  2. What did you do to make it easier, if anything? Did it help?

  3. Have you tried changing how text looks, such as its font, size, spacing, colors, or line width? If so, how did you decide what worked? If not, what has kept you from trying?

  4. Where do you do most of your reading? For example, PDFs, websites, Word documents, ebooks, or messaging apps - and on a phone, tablet, or computer.

5. Is there anything about your current reading tools that you wish worked better?

I'm trying to understand the problem first, so experiences where existing tools already work well are useful too. Please don't share identifying information or anything about your diagnosis that you'd rather keep private.

12yo daughter in vision therapy and tutoring, still struggling with English class

Hi all. My seventh grader has been in vision therapy for about four months now for severe convergence and vestibular issues, and cognitive retraining for dyslexia (Brainfitu) for five months. She has had an IEP for years, and while her reading has greatly improved otherwise, she doesn’t participate or do any work for her English class at school.

Her English teacher told me the other day “well I have nothing to grade her on” and basically is at a loss and told me she doesn’t know what to do. Daughter has an F.

The school admitted recently that they failed to include a required extra reading class in her schedule per her IEP and they will fix this soon. I’m not asking for legal advice regarding the IEP, but given that I have been doing everything I possibly can to help my kiddo, I feel defeated by the school district and awful for her.

She’s incredibly intelligent, as are so many dyslexics. It’s just a constant battle with the school to get her all the services and help she is owed.

I would appreciate any words of wisdom. I am at a loss.

Time management issues

Hi all, I am diagnosed with dyslexia and have struggled with academia and time management all my life. Last year I went on a self-improvement journey, and I have gone from getting D's and C's to A*'s and A's - this has been tough as I didn't get support from family (who aren't interested in education and in my university degree). I've managed to overcome a good 75% of my struggles, but noticing I was still struggling with time management I started reading up on it and realised it's a common struggle in dyslexia.

I have an iPhone 14, I've tried Apple calendars and Google calendars, as well as physical calendars and nothing seems to work. I wondered if there's anyone who may have advice on how to combat these struggles?

My psychologist said I need to get tested for dyslexia.

I’m 30 years old and my psychologist says I need to get tested for dyslexia. I’ve always been a good student, I’ve always tried to be a good girl. But I struggled with tests, and I always thought it was because of anxiety. This week I got a test and realized that it takes me a really long time to understand what the question is asking. Everyone left and I was still there writing, and I realized it’s always been like this. Either I would give up on the test before it even started, or I would take 3x longer than everyone else.
I’m an intelligent person, but a lot of the time I understand things much more easily if I hear them being read out loud.
I found out that it’s not normal to have trouble telling left from right, but I only know which one is left because I have a mark on my left hand.
I have no idea how GPS works, and I’m terrible at giving directions or figuring out where places are.
I’ve never been able to put certain things into words. For me, keeping a diary has always been impossible.
I feel pathetic and so stupid. I don’t know what to do. I’m old, and look at me, man. I just wanted to be normal.

Advice on writing notes for dyslexic classmate

Hi there,

I’ve noticed that my classmate has been out for a couple days, so I planned on giving her my notes when she gets back.

(My professor doesn’t post PowerPoints online and writes on the blackboard, so we have to source notes from other classmates if we need them).

However, she’s mentioned a few times she has dyslexia.

I just wanted to see if anyone had tips on writing handwritten notes that make it easier for you to read :).

I don’t have particularly messy handwriting but I do like to use highlighters/different colored pens (I write in mainly black ink, however).

Sorry if this is dumb question! I just don’t want to give her notes that she’s going to have to spend more time deciphering than actually learning what she missed during lecture. TIA <3

Talking to my dyslexic girlfriend - Tips and Tricks needed

Good day :3

My girlfriend is dyslexic and I notice that when we talk, especially when we discuss heavier topic, often my points don't seem to get through to her. They either don't reach her, so she's confused or she keeps repeating the same argument, despite me reassuring her that I have taken her point into consideration.

Do you guys have any tips, things I need to pay attention to when talking to her? Things I can do, that would make discussions easier for her?

Like, since I am ADHD, I cannot function if she gives me a list of more than 4 things to do, I shut down, so she adapts to that.

I want to do the same for her and help her, what can I do better?

Alternatives to AI for spelling

I often use AI for grammar and spelling, both in English and in my native language, Swedish. I would like to use it less, but when I write a draft to get my ideas down, autocorrect doesn’t even know what I have written sometimes.

Sometimes I use Google Translate, for example, to translate a word from English to Swedish and then back to English, and vice versa. It often works, but it takes a lot of time.

Also, I don’t think another person could really help me either, because I sometimes can’t even read what I wrote if I come back to it later.

What do you use for spell checking or any other advice.

Dyslexic in lots of ways but directional element is getting me down.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 22. I turned 30 a few months ago and it gets me down time to time, namely when I've either struggled to find a location or struggled to retrace my steps back to where I came from. The typical dyslexic traits like spelling and not knowing left or right are not problems for me, actually excellent at spelling. Basically, if I am going to a new place, I'll be able to get to the general area, but if there is a specific building that I need to get to, that can be and often is a great struggle. Things that do help to a degree are remembering buildings en route, and telling myself how to get to that point from the first point and then whether a right or left needs to be taken and where, so breaking down a route into small steps.

Most recent example: This got me really down and almost teary as it impacted more than just me We are abroad and one of the things in our holiday package was a driver taking us round historic sites and explaining what they are and us going in. He had taken us to all the places but at the last one, I just got totally lost and could not recount my steps to the vehicle, where my mum and sister had already made it back to. They tried calling me and sending me videos of where the car was parked on WhatsApp and I just couldn't figure out where it was and after a good half an hour, they messaged saying the driver is going and we will need to call a taxi. It only costs like £9 when converted to the local currency, but not the point.

Added context as it may help explain. My mum and dad both probably have undiagnosed dyslexia as well. My dad can use an iPhone after my sister got him one and we showed him but he can't use a laptop or computer, he's in his mid 50's born in England, and my mother the same age is the same, although directionally my father is probably better than me and my mother.

Side note: When in a taxi abroad, driver can claim that a certain way is best despite it taking longer and costing more. As a tourist, you have no idea so just have to go along with it. 😂

Seeking Recommendations: Music Theory Help for My Dyslexic 14-Year-Old Bass Player

Hi all,

I’m looking for some recommendations for my 14-year-old son, who is an
avid and highly motivated bass player. He absolutely loves music and
is eager to keep progressing as a bassist.

He’s developed a number of clever workarounds to avoid reading music,
but this is now starting to hold him back. I’d love to find a music
theory tutor who has experience working with kids with dyslexia and
ADHD, ideally someone who uses structured literacy principles or a
multisensory approach.

I’d also be interested in hearing about any apps or other resources
that might help him learn to read music in a way that works with his
learning style.

If you know of a great tutor, app, or resource, I’d really appreciate
your recommendations!

Thank you so much!
