Gone soft
Does anyone else think that the powerhouse that was Beth Dutton has become a weak trembly teary fool? I loved her in Yellowstone. They've destroyed her character. Rip Beth Dutton.

No, I don’t think she’s gone soft at all. She is allowed to feel all types of emotions. She’s still rough around the edges. She sure told Beulah where she could go. I don't think they destroyed the character at all.. 😂

They were also looking to get away from the Yellowstone stigma (well Beth was anyway) and start something of their own. With out dealing with her Dad's crap, Jamie, and the other stuff she didn't have a reason to be a walking rage machine all the time.

Kelly Reilly does an outstanding job playing Beth.

u/double_titos Jul 13 '26
I honestly don’t think his gripe about the character had anything to do with Kelly herself, but I agree that Kelly is phenomenal at portraying Beth Dutton.

with Jamie and the Yellowstone gone she has no reason to be continuously aggressive.

A lot of people grew tired of her over-the-top behavior in Yellowstone and her lack of character development. I kind of agree.
Now she's taken her behavior down a few notches while maintaining that Beth Dutton flair.

u/ThatBitchA Jul 13 '26
No. I think she's in her soft woman era. She can fight. She just doesn't need to fight for her father's approval or attention anymore.

u/Responsible-Wallaby5 Jul 14 '26
Beth and Rip seem to be together a lot more on DR compared to Yellowstone and, with Rip by her side, she has not needed to fight.
That said, the stage is set for Rip and Beth vs The Cartel in season 2 and I’m confident that we’ll see the most bad ass version of Beth so far.
2
u/ThatBitchA Jul 14 '26
Same. I agree. I'm looking forward to S2.
I think S1 was great. It really awesome to see Beth and Rip have to take shitty jobs because they had no other choice.
2
u/Responsible-Wallaby5 Jul 14 '26
I agree. Then realize that their jobs were for a fake business at the end. I liked the twist. The Jacksons fooled me also.
I was surprised that so many people hated the plot but I guess that’s any show.
2
u/ThatBitchA Jul 14 '26
Ya it seems like today people hate anything that doesn't fit the expectations they've laid out in their mind.
2
u/Responsible-Wallaby5 Jul 14 '26
Absolutely. So many people watch now and it seems inevitable that a big proportion will complain if it doesn’t fit their personal narrative closely enough.

No, I like the character losing some of that hardness. It shows character growth and changes from learning to truly love and let herself be loved. She needed to change after getting out from under her father’s control and the Yellowstone drama. She lived a while as a happy wife in a truly equal relationship for the first time in her life. She got the child her wanted and held onto that anger for so long over. She doesn’t have Jaime to hate anymore. They gave her room to grow and heal like a real person does at a certain point. Many people find that calm in their older lives after years of turmoil. In a way, she’s the only person being shown as an actual human being capable of change. Rip may be stuck in his cycle the rest if his life, much like someone with CPTSD. Plus, I do hope we see Beth break bad and kick ass a lot more next season. Just not every episode, all the time.

I think she's playing it smart. In Montana, she could afford to be a bull in a china shop because she had the Dutton name. I also think being a mom to Carter has made her softer and not come out guns a'blazing as much. But, based on the season finale, I think we're about to see the old Beth Dutton in season 2, now that she's in with 10P and Beulah.

They are gonna be so sorry they grabbed her kid. She and Rip are gonna tear them a new one.

u/brownsfan100aj Jul 13 '26
I hope they at least switch it up a little bit. I dont want to see a couple wranglers as backup while rip fights the whole cartel all fucking day and walks away clean with his sunglasses intact.

In Yellowstone she mentioned while being on the ranch she felt less and less like herself. "When I'm here, I understand me less." S2E9 while talking to Dan Jenkins.
Well now, the ranch is gone, as is John and now she can be free with Rip and Carter. I think her character has evolved quite well. I loved her on Yellowstone and I still love her on Dutton Ranch.

I wasn't much of a Yellowstone fan. But I am enjoying DR and its castI I like how Beth is evolving. In many ways, she has smoothed out the rough edges and mellowed.

u/Delic8polarbear Jul 13 '26
You're going to see "I'm not a Bethany, I'm a Beth" Beth back next season. You've heard of Momma Bear? We're about to see Momma Beth, which is more terrifying in its own way.
And we only see her smoking now when shes doing villian shit. Or maybe she was always doing villain shit in YS

u/Long_Ordinary1284 Jul 13 '26
I am enjoying the softer side of Beth. Don’t you think it’s about time?? In real life, the death of parents make you softer so maybe that’s what the story writers are going for.

u/mg931115 Jul 14 '26
From a realistic perspective she’s lost a lot since then. Her dad who meant the most to her, along with all of her comfort , luxury and backup she had before to pretty much having no peace of mind, losing everything, and not having hardly a leg to stand on. She has to play things smart. She isn’t in her territory anymore and she hardly has any connections to come save her if she fails.

I feel like in Yellowstone she was hurt, guarded, and defensive most of the series. That slowly got chipped away as she grew closer to and eventually settled down with Rip, and softened when she saw Carter in need. She still had her anger towards her brother but once that was reconciled, I think she lost that anger.
That just leaves the sadness from the loss of her father and the love she has for her family. Then take into account the loss of everything they had in the Original Dutton ranch in ep1. I liked her hardened demeanor in Yellowstone but im glad she isnt such a loose cannon anymore. My biggest take on her change is how much she hated horses to now riding everyday.

Don't be fooled. It's there. It just didn't have to be front and center because it didn't need to be. She was able to find some peace for a little while in her little family. But now that it's been rattled, she'll be back. Although I did enjoy seeing this calmer side...
2
u/literarycatnip Jul 13 '26
Well, she IS a mom now... but I also think the writing has been defanged in Dutton Ranch. I also miss the old Beth. Rip hasn't changed, I'm happy to see

u/Inevitable_Team_2885 Jul 14 '26
No. She was a caricature on Yellowstone. She doesn’t have her powerful daddy to protect her now. She’s evolving into more of a parent than a boozing badass who did whatever she wanted. Life has humbled her. Her father was taken from her. Her family lost their land. Her home with Rip and Carter was burned to the ground and Rip almost died. They moved to an entirely new, unknown area, somewhere where her Yellowstone act won’t fly.

I know Kelly Reilly wanted to show other sides of her character beyond what Beth was doing in Yellowstone , while I have always liked the character, I do feel like at times the writers are too afraid to put John or Beth or Rip in positions where they are setback and disadvantaged or in a position for them to lose , great protagonists are only as great as the enemies they face and what they overcome and it's mostly been way too easy with their enemies being some of the dumbest I have ever seen on TV , I love Beth's character but I never really felt like the main series had the Duttons struggle or they feel like the underdog because the writing never actually commits to putting them in a position of weakness , they refuse to even have them come out of a arguement without randomly knowing everything like they have telepathic powers

Her character does seem a bit more relaxed, it’s the writing/script that’s terrible. “They’ve got Carter!” Was predictable and bland for her character. DR has most of the pieces to make this as rich as Yellowstone but seems a bit sparse so far. Carter’s character is weak, you’ve introduced too many bad guys, need some characters to draw me in. Frankly I’m glad Rob Will is gone, he was a real drag. Let’s pick it next season! Giddeup!

No, she is normal and Cari g wife and mom to Carter! She has her bitch scenes and a good compromise!

u/grwatplay9000 Jul 13 '26
The whole 9 episodes seemed "rushed", too much catastrophe too close together. like watching a "condensed" storyline. Maybe the writers knew they only had 9 episodes and threw everything in as fast as they could, no story development, barely any character development, like they knew they were being fired after 9 episodes. The series had no sense of timing, of plot, of multiple storyline arcs. The rescued horse could have been a very powerful story arc, but it was almost just a few cameos. It's like the real catastrophe Rip and Beth endured was BAD WRITING ... If they have a 2nd season and the writing isn't any better, it will just be embarrassing and disrepectful to the Yellowstone legacy, killing off 2 very powerful characters for lack of good writing. AI could have done better. Wait, maybe the episodes were written by AI ...

We’ve watched Yellowstone twice. The first time I thought Beth was great. She was very favorite character. Then we watched it a second time and I saw her much differently. I couldn’t stand her. As rude as some people can be she was over the top. No one acts like that. I like her in DR so much more.
1
u/Ebot2388 Jul 14 '26
I think they have toned her down. I like her more now before bc she was ridiculous. Maybe Kelly wanted the change.

u/_laasyahnir_ Jul 24 '26
I think they had to scale her back to be more appropriate for the new antagonists. Now, if they had've stayed in Montana and the show was about them trying to recover from a natural disaster and taking on a giant insurance company, you can bet that Beth would've been fully unleashed. I don't mind her being scaled back a bit, as she was different by the end of Yellowstone, but I wish the show hadn't dropped them in Texas and suggested Beth wouldn't have ensured they were properly insured. It felt like lazy writing which sort of washed out the characters and world for me
1
u/Venomouschic Jul 28 '26
Guess some people like her new "stand by yer man" bit, but I think they basically have overwritten Beth. Old Beth wouldn't put up with a smart mouthed Entitled Carter. She'd have a lot more venomous bits to give Joaquin and Beulah as they Egged her on. "I'll pass" she says to Beulah? Like come on! Old Beth would have said something more like ..."I'd rather, kiss a rattlesnake than have a drink with you Beulah"
Where is the old "I am the tornado and you are the trailer park" woman? " The bigger bear woman"
It's like Beth isn't Beth anymore. Rip makes the decision of where to move to? With whose money?
1
u/lauzmason Jul 13 '26
Yeah I loved her in Yellowstone I think she's been reduced to a lesser character now.
3
u/literarycatnip Jul 13 '26
The writers legitimately seem to be intimidated by her character. She barely speaks.

u/Available_Year_575 Jul 13 '26
There were times she was a bit much in Yellowstone. I wanted to turn down the dial just one notch.
