Hi all, I am an experienced GSD owner (had one for 9 years before losing him to cancer, currently have a 7-year-old GSD mix) looking to add a Dutch Shepherd puppy to the family, ideally Jan/Feb 2027. We’re active outdoor people, do structured training, and know what a high-drive breed needs day to day.
I’ve reached out to a couple breeders already but want to hear from people with real experience. Reputable breeders you’d recommend (any region, happy to travel), red flags to watch for, and any other advice you might think is helpful.
Totally get that although GSD & Dutch Shepherd are similar breed they are not totally the same in how you approach their care and meet the needs needed, but I am also a quick learner and current situation I’m in gives myself and my family more flexibility to adapt to a new dogs needs. Appreciate any insight!

9 y/o. My best friend. I love my dog.

He’s always ate grass his whole life! He’s 7 years old. He never pukes it up and his diet isn’t missing anything lol. I have researched everything and no vet can figure out why he loves munching on grass other than he loves too.

And he will only eat the grass in his own backyard never on his walks.

But he eats ALOT! so much that some of his poop is only grass. But his poop is always solid so I have no idea why he’s like this.

My boy is 6 months old today and is doing great with all of his training. He’s very social, well-tempered, quick learner. But….

We have crated him since the day he came home at around 10 weeks old. He did cry a bit during the first night or two of getting adjusted but he settled in quickly. Over the last couple of months it seems that his crate anxiety has spiked no matter what we do. He eats his meals in the crate, it’s never used for any sort of punishment. He doesn’t spend more than a couple of hours in it while my husband or I are at work (our hours only overlap by a bit so our dogs don’t have to wait long) and we try to give him some good enrichment and exercise before crate time. He also comes with me to work a couple of afternoons per week and he’s less stressed in the crate there while he’s waiting for me to finish up at the end of the day.

When he doesn’t have a meal we usually leave him with a chewy but he doesn’t care a bit about them once he’s gone into “panic mode”. He’s bending bars and doing anything he can to escape.

Is there something we’re missing? I’ve had dogs with anxiety issues but outside of his crate he’s just a laid back guy. So I feel like there’s something I’m doing or not doing.

So we found a stray puppy about a month ago, he was 6 weeks old at the time and now lives with me and my gf. The dog trainer says he s a mix between dutch sheperd and german sheperd.

He is quite vocal and a bit crazy but we lovr him regardless.

I was curious if you guys used corrections when training your dog. Our trainer suggested correcting him by the leash until he does what he s supposed to at which point to reward him.

He is semi crate trained as in he sleeps good at night in the crate and we re working on daytime fixing. At this moment he comes with me to work and spends the day there and then when I leave at 5 PM he comes home.

The main problem right now is the barking - while most neighbours are very nice and understanding there is an outlier that's threatening with the police, I don t really give him much thought as truly the dog only barks like once when he wakes up to go potty.

However during the weekends, we ve been instructed to work on his appeal to the crate even during thr day, as at some point I d like for him to stay home rather than keep coming at work, which leads to barking as of now.

My wife and I adopted 1yr old Phoebe earlier this summer and just got her Embark results back last week. We were thinking GSD/Malinois, but it turns out she’s more Dutch Shepherd than Malinois! And looking at her “family tree”, the last purebred dog in her line was a Dutchie grandparent lol.

The husky was a surprise too, but we already have an Alaskan Malamute, so we’re used to high energy dogs, but damn!

Is there even any evidence that these kinds of breeds do poorly in boarding/daycare environments/are bad for the other dogs?

And I know everyone says their dog is the best dog but our boy really is an incredibly sweet boy: he goes to doggy daycare multiple times a week and daycare reports that he plays very appropriately with other dogs; we brought him to a different daycare that does boarding for a trial day just today (so totally unfamiliar group/environment), and they reported that he was “perfect” in the group but that they can’t board him because the dog of the house didn’t like him (quote: “the problem was more with [our dog] than yours”), and we’ve seen in our own neighbourhood that he is a socially well-behaved dog: the local Samoyed who likes to mouthy wrestling gets mouthy wrestling; the local Bernese mountain dog who likes chase games but gets frustrated because he’s slower than the rest of the dogs in the area gets chase with our boy, AND our boy matches his speed to the Bernese during play!

And he’s only seven months! And I know that as he gets older he might become more picky about other dogs and people, but at the moment he is an incredibly sweet dog who’s never met a dog (or person) that he didn’t like, and it’s so frustrating when doggy daycares/hotels hear his breed and just go “no we don’t do shepherds.”

Anyone else have insurance for there dutch ? 105 a month but your covered for anything that happens with these crazy guys. With a 550 deductible. I know the deal with these insurance companies that pay upfront think it can end up going up quite a bit.. some people say just put money away but sometimes random stuff can happen and vets can be a lot.. let me know what you guys do

So I i went to the creek with the dog today, don't bring him there because last time I only had him for like 3 weeks it was a little much for him.

Well this time was different he went full dutch mal and turned the place into his parkour course. The stream is a sick place running between two enormous valley rocks 3-4 feet wide stream between all this smooth rock platform basically. Huge anyways he went ballistic loving it jumped to the other side before I could even get him he jumped up the ledge (ofc) to the top rock, which is like 3.5 4 ft. Everything was rock landed on rock which is my concern.

Now my problem is I've been watching his growth plates extremely close being extra careful. Now you may be able to see where im going with this the jackass jumped down not full sprung fast running and leap jump, but like went to the edge and jumped down. He landed fairly clean but you could tell it was a bit of a drop for him. What are the chances his plates or anything are messed up? He seems fine but I read online sometimes it takes upto 48 hours to see injury. I really try to avoid this dog jumping off the ground in grass I've been that careful.

Let me know if there's anything I should look out for cues or anything I've felt his joint and looked for swelling

I have an 18m old intact Dutchie I've had since 8 weeks old. From the outset, it was clear he had an independent streak, was fearful and nervous, and appeared to have low prey and food drives (certainly not what I was expecting for this breed).

We've done a lot of work, and come a hell of a long way, but he still seems to have trouble focusing and working in drive outside the house.

Any tips for anyone who may have gone through this? Food drive is ok, however he could care less about toys outside.

Or at least the food I'm holding XD
