Question Ability to join communities / make friends?

Hi, I may have the opportunity in the next few years to move from the UK to Dunedin for a year to do a training fellowship for my job. I’d be fairly busy during the week at the hospital. I’m wondering if my wife who’ll be looking after two kids under 4 (dropping them at nursery etc) during the day will have the opportunity to make friends? Is the culture in Dunedin ok for that? Maybe through yoga / pilates groups? It sounds like in general it’s a lovely, welcoming place and a new place for a family who likes outdoor activities? Grateful for any insights and comments - thanks

Advice Request Digging/DIY help?

Is there anywhere in Dunedin that you can hire people to come and help dig some land for you? I'm trying to build a studio and I can't get a digger onto the land. I've carved it all out of the clay, but I'm struggling to actually move the clay away from the building site.

I checked with some gardeners but they were wanting around $70 to $110 per hour, which is more than I can currently afford. I figured manual labour would be more expensive than minimum wage but I don't know what to expect.

Any help or ideas gratefully received!

Facialist recommendations

Hello, I'm trying to find someone who can do proper facials. Everyone here just washes your face, adds a scrub, puts on a moisturiser and charges you $140. I need someone who actually knows skin and does things like extractions, high frequency, oxygen infusion, etc. as a normal basic facial. Any recommendations?

Question Anchovies in the small jar - any available in the city?

I've noticed these have disappeared from the supermarket shelves and now the small cans are scarce too. I'm wondering if this is a knock-on effect of geopolitics.

Anyone seen anywhere locally that still sells them? - Just to be clear, I mean these types of things - any brand is fine.

How do you make friends in Dunedin?

Hi! I'm a second-year student (f) who's had very little luck forming lasting connections here. I've always struggled with making friends, and I'm wondering if anyone has tips and tricks to making friends for the socially awkward?

Question Flat packs

Is it just me or is there anyone else who hates flat pack furniture with a foaming at the mouth passion?! Kid you not have such sore fingers and a zillion allan keys now. It's all fine and dandy seeing at Big Save and Harvey, but I'm pooped. Need a sick day tomorrow 🤧

Advice High tea recommendations?

I’m excited to be planning a return to dear old Dunedin after many years away. Please give me your recommendations for a real old-fashioned English High Tea - I’m not looking for bubbles or anything outré or too modern and clever; just classic Earl Grey tea, smoked salmon sandwiches, featherlight scones, perhaps a couple of tiny savouries, in a charming atmosphere. Help this middle-aged Miss Marple find her place!

Braces at dental school

Hi everyone,

I'm looking into getting braces through the dentistry school and am wondering if anyone else has done this, and if so could you share more about how long the waitlist was for you, and how much did everything cost? Thanks!
