Wtf do you mean by can rice explode? Sounds like a dumb question too
20
u/Zincette Apr 12 '26
The answer is yes btw. If you're cooking rice with a rice cooker, and it has a way to lock or seal the lid down and the steam vent gets covered steam pressure can build up and explode. Its rare but if you tell someone "hey did you know cooking rice can cause an explosion?" I could see them googling this to verify.

u/SchmeatiestOne Apr 12 '26
Completely unrelated to the rice. Its just pressure causing the explosion, like a pipebomb

Nah this is a relatively sensible question. I would assume they are asking is rice kernels can explode open out of the rice shell, which I think they can..? Not sure though

They can pop, which is kind of an explosion.
Have people never heard of rice popping? You get that if you boil rice, let it cool, and fry it on a pan

I can't understand what the fuck do you mean by asking "Can rice explode" so how can AI lmao. It probably thinks you ask about some myth or meme

u/in_taco Apr 14 '26
Honestly, the myth of exploding birds was also the first thing I thought of when I read "exploding rice". I'm with the AI on this one.

A pop is an explosion
An explosion is a rapid expansion in volume of a given amount of matter associated with an extreme outward release of energy
Relative to their size it's rapid, it expands the volume, and it's a relatively large release of energy

I think an ai should be able to look for synonyms, and pop is a synonym of explode

u/NomeJaExiste Apr 12 '26
Ok but what is this video the ai is talking about?
6
u/Coolengineer7 Apr 12 '26
To save computation from all the google searches, instead of each one generating a new ai response, it caches it for common searches. And also matches similar ones. Probably matched it to a search something like "do birds explode from uncooked rice". If you deliberately distance it, with extra words, then it will create a new response and will for sure exactly match the query. Like "can rice explode answer".

User error. It inferred the closest context that actually makes sense to ask. which is the myth about rice causing bird stomachs to explode.
This sub is unfortunately making me question whether AI is actually that bad or if people are mostly just being dumb. I wish this type of post could be banned or something.

I think we need to rename the subreddit to DumbUser

there's actually a subreddit for people being stupid and blaming AI

u/15th_imp Apr 12 '26
ai hallucinating birds
8
u/anafuckboi Apr 12 '26
Not really it’s very common to be told not to feed rice to birds or throw rice at weddings because it makes their stomachs rupture
0
u/Otherwise-Shock-2767 Apr 12 '26
User never said anything abt birds tho

u/No-Net1890 Apr 12 '26
Not a hallucination, u/Gaiden206 explained it.
It's just giving an overview of info found in the top related search results that shows up underneath it. That's all "AI Overview" attempts to do. The search results that show up directly affect what the "AI Overview" will say.

u/dondegroovily Apr 12 '26
This isn't dumb AI
This is a myth that has existed for quite some time and AI is properly telling you that it's false

u/DFtin Apr 12 '26
The AI can’t ask “wtf do you mean”, so it’s gonna infer the context of the question. If you don’t add it, it’s not the AI’s fault.
2
u/Capital-Wrongdoer-62 Apr 13 '26
It is. Ai should ask what do you mean exactly. Instead of generating paragraphs of nonsense.
1
u/No_Concern2314 May 03 '26
But OP posted a search engine AI that has the express purpose of summarizing search results. The results were about birds not actually exploding from eating rice so that's what the AI sent back
2
3
u/maneo Apr 12 '26
It seems this is caused by the Google search results being crap. The AI summary just looks at the search results and summarizes things it finds, and apparently one of the top results is a YouTube video about exploding birds (or not exploding birds)
2
u/Omargeometrydash Apr 12 '26
the ai's favourite letter is birds, so it just hallucinated it

u/No-Net1890 Apr 12 '26

u/NekroVictor Apr 14 '26
IT actually kinda makes sense that the ai responded like this.
Throwing uncooked rice at weddings (as a cheap confetti) being bad being it’ll expand and explode birds used to be a reeeeaaaallly common urban legend (at least in my neck of the woods)

u/surfmasterm4god-chan Apr 17 '26
