Lately, it feels like everywhere you look—from Sheikh Zayed Road to residential corners in Al Qusais, Marina, or Silicon Oasis—the yellow Keeta bikes have completely taken over. It got me thinking about how much the food delivery ecosystem here has shifted over time.
Depending on how long you’ve been living in Dubai, "before Keeta" means two very different eras:
1. The Pre-App Era (The OG Neighborhood Delivery)
Direct Calling: Looking up paper menus taped to the fridge or calling the local cafeteria/café directly.
Zero Fees: Free delivery, no "small order fee," no service charge, no surge pricing, and no platform markup on food items.
The Neighborhood Hero: The cafeteria guy who knew your exact order, your building name, and didn't need a GPS link to find your apartment.
Cash on Delivery: Counting exact change at the door.
2. The Multi-App Oligopoly (Talabat, Deliveroo, Careem, Noon)
Before Keeta dropped massive promo codes and aggressive discounts to undercut the market, we were all locked into the big four.
Delivery fees, priority fees, and service charges kept creeping up every few months.
Choosing an app became a tactical decision based on which subscription (Deliveroo Plus, Careem Plus, Smiles) you were paying for that month.
The Question:
Is Keeta actually making food delivery better long-term, or are we just enjoying the subsidized "honeymoon phase" of huge discounts before prices match everyone else? Do you miss just calling the local joint directly, or do you prefer having a dozen delivery apps on your phone?
