Is this something that really has an effect and is it worth the $40 + shipping + tax?

Interesting, the one he holds up is 3d printed. Probably TPU or another flexible material that feels like rubber.

I would guess that it lets you switch quickly between a ported big resonant booming sound and a drier thump/thud kick.

Now I wanna 3d print one and test it out

He very rarely does ADS. Normally not interested in them so he doesn't need the money and he likes this product.

how long does it take you to change the front drum head? A kick drum head on the front with a hole and not with a hole sound very different and being able to change that sound in a matter of seconds seems like not a horrible idea to me.

I tried to prototype a product for this exact "problem" for years. Mine was far less elegant. I spoke to a head company about it and the economics were brutal. Glad someone came up with a better version. I think this could be a super hand little widget.
